  • Chartwell LS3/5A are impressive speakers with magical midrange and sweat and clear sound. Flat soundstage, yet still very engaging to listen. Not for bass lovers though. Adding a set of DIY Rogers AB1 gives more body to LS35As, but it also takes away some of the magical midrange.
    The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the look and feel of Chartwell LS3/5A speakers together with Rogers AB1 subwoofers and not their sound.

    From all his post, for me THE tannoy monitor gold is the game ender on this audiophile journey. I wish I had one pair and I'd be the happiest. Great post(s) by the way.

      Thank you. Not quite - my current speakers are modified Yamaha NS1000 - IMHO a lot more detailed than MG15. Here is my review if you were interested: audionostalgia.co.uk/review_yamaha_ns-1000m.php.
      But the journey has not ended yet...

      Thanks. It is rather hard to judge their sound from a UA-cam video but I'm glad you like it. The song is excellent, the video is actually rather poor ;).

      i can judge the sound pretty well because my Lumin is upsampling to 176.4 khz on Spendor S100...sounds nice but since the speaker box is so small...it can't compete with the larger speakers Spendor S100...

    What is your opinions on this speakers driven by the Italian Simply 845 amplifier you also had, and what is hidden under the red cover in the right corner ( I would guess 😉) ? MANY THX

    Yes for sure, there is magic that surrounds them and it is beyond explanation. I own them myself and they keep me busy, wondering how there magic is possible. Just fascinating loudspeakers.

    I've heard these with big PS Audio amps and holy crap..My problem is they fulfil 95% on my musical needs it's the other 5% that I really would miss..I'm planning on Maggies and the big ones..But this looks like a great little system..I would up the amp spec as they do deserve more..A great bet would be a top of the range Bryston with a valve pre and this believe or not wouldn't kill the bank..Anyway fabulous and thanks for this

    • @AudioNostalgia
      @AudioNostalgia  5 років тому

      Thank you for your comment - these are indeed a very special little speakers. I'm not too keen on valve sound and in my experience, in a properly designed blind test with balanced volumes and instant switch, I was not able to tell any difference between any of the decent quality modern transistors amps I tested, hence I am not too enthusiastic about swapping any changing amplification. Saying that, I have never heard any of the Bryston gear. Moreover, it is all subjective, so each to their own. All the best!

      PS Audio is good stuff. Go for all tube if you can afford it. Tube pre an power amp. That's where it's at Garth.

      @@doosworld1901 I know I've have everything from Sets to PP to OTL and they are fab..I'm 51 I started with my first valve stuff way back when I was 21, jeeze that long!!, I am a massive valve fan but just occasionally a speaker does need some solid state however stick a valve pre in and you're kind of there..Thanks you've made me think again :-)

    Please what is the size of this listening room ? I'm ardly thinking about to buy this kind of combo that is actually in production and sale buy Stirling Acustics ! May you post an other wid with this speaker combo and put your camera/microphone in the sweetspot and not so fare away to the side as in this vid .my room is only 9x12 feet with one wall on its longside right lowering down quit steep. Do you think I could run this speaker with a Tube Amp running on one 845 Tube / channel and producing 25 Watt ?

    • @AudioNostalgia
      @AudioNostalgia  6 років тому

      Matthias Schnapka The listening room was 24m2. I no longer live there and I sold this combo long time ago. I liked it but I preferred the LS3s on their own, it seemed that adding the AB1s took away a little bit of their ‘magic’. I’ve heard good things about Stirling, but never had a pleasure to listen to their speakers.
      I don’t know how loud you like to listen, but to me 24wpc and rather low sensitivity of LS3s would not be enough.

    • @AudioNostalgia

      @@AudioNostalgia I agree even though I never heard the Chartwell or Falcons. Since I listen to all genre of music and I trust the design by Alan Shaw and it did have great measurements in Stereophile. The P3ESR is only speaker I listen to at the dealer. I didn't even want to take chance on the new XD as never heard and it has mixed reviews. Thanks😊

    Try to swap the large 220 uF electrolytic cap for a reasonably good film cap. That will help the midrange problem you describe.

    • @AudioNostalgia
      @AudioNostalgia  7 років тому

      You can see my set up as well us the gear that I previously tested on my website: audionostalgia.co.uk.
      I don't like to advise people as perception of sound is very subjective. Not to mention differences in room acoustic, etc. Therefore, I can only comment on what sounds good to me.
