Glenn Tipton, if you're reading this, I consider you amongst the greatest composers of the modern era.
Self-taught guitarist.
@@gbaker9295 Really? Where could I find a good bio of Glenn?
@@recordman555 I'm not sure. I read an interview where he said prior to picking up the guitar at age 19, he'd studied piano. Never had a guitar lesson tho
@@gbaker9295 Yes, he played piano on some early Judas Priest.
@Raider Slater king Edward Van Halen was A Great Piano Player ❤️🇺🇸
Taken in isolation, you'd never believe from this that you were seeing one of the greatest vocalists of all time!
why not lol its not like good singers have any particular look
Rob is so kind and gentlemanly, and has such a calm, relaxing demeanor and speaking voice. I love him. ❤️
A genuinely lovely guy.
Me too. He came out a few years before my adolescent self realized that the way I am and how I feel means that “I’m gay” and began to look for relatable role models :) His voice is always there when it’s time to dust off the cobwebs & get going.
Rob seems like a really nice guy
He is. He always has been.
Also - Sir. Glenn Tipton. Cheerio - M2.H.B. 2021!
man tipton was a handsome man in his day!
Glenn is still handsome.
Priest took it to the next level became the greatest metal band ever
Who'd have thought at the time that these guys would become the ultimate icons of heavy metal?
The Metal Gods.
Although he was only 29 here, Glenn Tipton has always come off rather reserved but incredibly refined and sophisticated in interviews. Absolute English Gentleman.
WOW!! Look at how young there were in this video!
Yeah I know,Rob looks like an English School boy
Amazing video quality for a 1977 footage
Film, the same thing used to shot movies, thats why the quslity is TOP
Can you look more british than Halford in this clip lol
Kim Larsson all he needs is a cup of tea
he lacks the traditional teeth though
Certainly, ever see a guy in a pinstripe suit and bowler hat
What does British look like?
@@petermcallister8489 Ugly. You are an ugly people Peter McAllister.
Rob is such an understated person. If I had never heard of them, saw this interview, then a performance, I would have never imagined how amazing they are! Total greatness!
Sin after sin is a great masterpiece album
Hell yeah! and Sinner! And that Artwork! simply genial
Yeah it is, maybe my favorite
Dissident Aggressor is the song that always gets me from that album. Fantastic vocals on that song.
@@Tessmage_Tessera The drums also stand out, and it turns out they had some random session man on drums for just that song named Simon Phillips. He faded into obscurity afterwards, but he put a huge stamp in the world of metal for that phenomenal recording!
@leeham6230 Simon Phillips faded? He was in Toto for a while for one! ,look up his C.V and you will see he far from faded! Apparently ne was still a teenager when he recorded Sin after Sin.. . or not much older. Sublime technical drummer
Robs Voice Hasn’t Aged A Day still sounds the Same 43 Years After This Video
His singing voice has definitely changed
Rob looks like a school boy XD
a look that helped when he was "breaking the law breaking the law"
Hard to believe Tipton is 70 years old now and looks about 40-50
heis 70?
@@uignireddngfiurdsgfiurdse
Wrong! Glenn was born 47, Rob in 51!
@@Duevel They were talking about Tipton. Oh well. Teehee
4:43 oh man look at the size of those hands. Glenn has perfect hands for guitar playing.
I friggin love Judas Priest they're a musical power house of Rock and Roll magic.
x2
Fuckin’ Oath 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yup!
Rob Halford is such a lovely man.
When I look at Halford here, it’s hard to believe that later, he would be a leather and studs clad metal head singing “Some Heads Are Gonna Roll” to thousands of fans.
Rock on !!!!
Awww. What a nice interview - You can see the good chemistry between both of them, that`s why they both wrote so good material together - Both so articulate and adorable! Just look at Glenn 4:32 when he is giving that slight flattered smile when the interviewer points out the versatility.. Hehehehe cute.
So elegant.... so polite.....
So shortly after releasing Sin After Sin the album Glen is talking about them starting to work on was Stained Class, and the one they wanted to make in the same year while they were in "song writing mode" was Hell Bent for Leather/Killing Machine. Such incredible output by the band, three masterpiece in a two year span!
Yeah, the work pace of bands back then was amazing, they had hardly released an album, when they were practically planning the release to the follow up to the next one!
@@deaf2demands706 they were doing really good drugs for those albums
In 76-80 they released 5 consecutive classic albums plus of the greatest live albums ever! 😮
9th grade; me and my friends were introduced to Hell Bent and it just blew our little minds! We had never heard such power and intensity from a piece of vinyl. Hooked for life.
That was the thing- not just being prolific, but the QUALITY of those albums was incredible.
As an Australian who grew up on Rage this blows my mind, Sin after Sin wasn't even out yet and they were in my country already its amazing!
i love Rob's voice, so magnetic
I was 7 yrs old during this interview, wouldn't know priest till 7 years after, 56 now and still love Priest
I was 7 yrs old during this interview (born '69), and tomorrow I turn 53. How could you be 56 seven months ago??
I still love Priest too BTW..
@@petezzzz Math isn’t my best lol
@@laztavusMine neither, but thanks for the confimation.. 😄
@@petezzzz Yeah, I was 7 at the time, and I'll be 54 in March 2024, the guy's full of shit.
The loveliness of youth
This shows that Tipton and Halford are and were extremely professional in their approach to JP, which has grown into a global band and brand. They are very serious about the topics that are central to the long term success of JP. Amazing to see this recording from 1977, awesome.
Legends. I was privileged to see them thru their entire musical journey. Starting with unleashed in the east album.
Hey Glenn, thank you for inventing modern heavy metal.
You are the most amazing band EVER!!❤
Been a fan since 1980... Sin After Sin remains as my favorite JP masterpiece!
I'm behind you a few years. Some Heads.... was the first metal song I heard on LA radio when it came out in 1984 and being 11 years old, it made such a huge impression on me and have been a lifelong Priest and metal fan
I heard them in 1981 with Point of Entry. I just wasn’t sold on how good they were. Then in 1982 they toured with Maiden. Screaming for Vengeance put them at superstar level. But I like the old stuff like Stained Class and Hell bent for leather.
@@analogkid4957 Those are two of my all time favorite albums, Hell Bent for Leather just happens to be my all time favorite Priest album PERIOD.
I been a fan since 1980 too. Priest with support Saxon was my second concert ever. Killing Machine and British Steel will always belong to my all time faves!
love Glenn's hair...
I consider Glenn Tipton one of the greatest heavy metal guitarist in history his lead with his partner-in-crime KK we're simply just off-the-charts long time ago
Rob doesn't look metal in this interview,he looks so neat just like a university student 😅
This was their pre-Black leather era
A pre-school syudent
Yeah he does. Rob looks around 20 years of age. In this interview. I think he would actually be around 25 or 26. Not sure though.
@@joemcconnell2674 Yes born in '52 I believe so you are spot on.
I agree, he looks very innocent....😇
The greatest screamer out there.
Classic footage.... Incredibly talented band. Arguably GOAT in their segment... Rob Halford's voice is sensational. That sounds like Molly Meldrum...imagine how many bands / singers he interviewed back in the day that become megastars. These guys are certainly in that category.
Rob sitting there all calm but always at the ready to belt out an ear bleeding scream completely at WILL! 💥🔥💥
Little did they know they would become the best heavy metal band of the world one day :-)
Absolute gold.if they only knew they were on the fast track to being the METAL GODS 🤘🤘
*LONG LIVE PRIEST*
Less did everyone that priest was 3 years away from becoming the greatest heavy metal band in history. 80s Priest is legendary.
What a band!!!!!!!!
Glenn Tipton 😍
At that time, who knew that Judas Priest would go on to become one of the biggest and one of the most influential band in the history of Metal music.
Hermoso Rob Halford
What absolute gentlemen! Lots of respect for Molly, and they are hard rockers. More respect than some of the pop artists who would mock Molly back in the day.
Your Molly is a moron. Lazy too. He didn't even bother listening to the album he was interviewing them for. And knew nothing of them as a band. He's a dunce. That's why Tipton looks at him with contempt.
@@Frip36 Well said Captain, i'm surprised he even interviewed them, usually he has only heard of a band once they have made it really big, in 79' he had not even heard of UFO and Rush, he is a try-hard of the highest order but is worshipped here in Australia, total mainstream music flog.
@@Frip36 He said at the beginning of the interview 'I have heard your album'.
I' was 10 years old wen this hapend, now i'm 53 & still in love whith músic! Metal mongers to the very end!!!!!!
I love Judas Priest!! 🤘🏻🔥🖤
I love seeing these old clips or videos from when they just started and then see how they progress. And i feel so sad when i see someone become ill and hindered in what they born to do, also i agree with what other wrote, Rob Halford seems so nice as a person, obv i havent meat him and he could be a monster for all i know. But i believe he is a wonderful guy
Rob is a RIOT!! Even with age he still has knowledge about what's in style.
But,Glen is thee main man for me..👍😍
The term heavy metal didn't exist yet so it's interesting to hear them try and describe their sound and style without using the term.
Read William S. Burroughs novel, Naked lunch. The term Heavy Metal was used in the novel but nothing about music, though. The book was published in the late 1950's. Steppenwolf's classic, "Born to be wild" contains the phrase Heavy Metal. That was in 1969.
This is true. The earliest I've heard the band use the term "heavy metal" to describe themselves was a live show in 1980. Still looking for something earlier, but I can't find it.
I think Tipton described it perfectly. JP’s music is a struggle between good and evil.
Some claim that the US rock music critic Lester Bangs, while working for Creem magazine, used the expression in 1968 to describe a performance of the band MC5 (Motor City Five), but I've been unable to find documentary evidence of that. Creem magazine themselves attribute the term to Mike Saunders, in an article about the 'Kingdom Come' album, by Sir Lord Baltimore, in the May 1971 edition of the magazine:
"This album is a far cry from the currently prevalent Grand Funk sludge, because Sir Lord Baltimore seems to have down pat most all the best heavy metal tricks in the book."
This has the benefit of being a traceable citation, as copies of the edition are still extant. So, until other hard evidence is found, that has to be the current strongest claim. It would be surprising if the term had never been used in the musical context before 1971 though - after all Steppenwolf used it in the lyric of their 1968 song Born to be Wild:
"I like smoke and lightning
Heavy metal thunder
Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under"
The phrase may be American but the music was born, like my good self, in the 'jewel of the English Midlands' - the Black Country.
monicajean37 that might be is then. Black Sabbath started in 68, “Born to be wild” was released in 68. All we need to do is find out what month the article, Black sabbath and born to be wild were all released and Vwalà, we have it!
great footage, i was born february 11 of this year
So was my brother. Whoa freaking trippy
They were so young here
Great interview, Looks like the same Room that Bon scott was interviewed in.
Really wish there a full video of them in the studio Recording Stained class
always so professional/business sense and polite and educated presence those two- Glenn was sure of the band and it shows
JP interviews are always so proper and great.
In the middle of making Stained Class’78 I suppose. Few years after a desperate teen learning to cope with life would come across Beyond the Realms of Death ... cheers, Glenn!
I love how unassuming looking Rob Halford was before the leather and spikes. He looks like he could be playing rhythm guitar for Huey Lewis and the news lol
2:55 "What we decided to do was to get two albums together, work in the New Year and not stop again, release one album and then have the other in the can ready to release"
Glenn foreshadowing in this 1977 interview exactly what JP would go on to do in '78 with Stained Class and Killing Machine
And not exactly run-of-the-mill albums they came up with at that!
That's just how bands used to work, an album a year and touring. Nowadays, you are lucky if you get an album every 5 years from most acts.
They're just babies here! So cool to see this interview from their early days. Thanks for posting, DuckPlumberThe4th!
I have never seen a clip from this era before. 70s Priest is my favorite era of any band, so whoever put this on UA-cam, thank you! Thank you so much! The only other video I’ve seen from Priest in the 70s is 20-25 min live footage from Tokyo 78, Grey Whistle test 75 (Rocka Rolla and Dreamer Deceiver), a couple of top of the pops videos from Killing Machine and a couple short snippets from Reading Festival (75?) I think. Thank you so much for this cool interview!
A piece of history
This is so classic..Very wicked old interview..
Wowwwwwwww. So sweet and fresh faced.
Sin After Sin is probably still my favourite Priest album. Having Simon Phillips on drums was a definite plus, too.🤘🤘🤘🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Class Act
What intelligent young men. No wonder they became so successful. Contrast their thoughtful and articulate answers with the gibberish that comes out of the mouths of similarly-aged people these days!
Saw them with Led Zeppelin in 1977 (GOAT) . They were unknown to me at the time, but amazing, as I recall.
Before the term "heavy metal"!
Love it!
Why does rob look so godamm cute!!
He really does
Please don't blaspheme the Name of God (The Christian Holy Trinity). Peace!
@@RapidCycling07 Save it for church.
Glen you are my rockstar!!!!!! Hit rockin man
Rob looks like a school boy. So polite.
Who would've thought that this quiet unassuming British lad would go on to become the Metal God we all know him as today.
Is it me or does Glenn kinda resemble Bon Scott here with his dark brown hair and eyes etc.? Great footage and you can tell Rob is an intelligent guy by his answers. One of my top 5 favorite singers and bands!
Funnily enough as interview with Bon was done at the same time as this one for countdown. In front of the same curtain and all
Greg McGrath I have seen that interview as well but very good observation! Thanks for pointing that out
Thanks for uploading this. Great stuff!
Thank you.
many thanks for this rare interview!!!! super!!!
This is so cool 1977.
Rob has such dreamy eyes 😻
4:30 Glenn's Brit moment: missing tooth! You simply can't be a Brit and have all teeth.
Lol brilliant observation
LOL
Tap as Fuck
Still the best looking guy in the group though, I bet most of the ladies went for him!!
kpax45 well, Lita Ford sure did (it’s mentioned in her book)!
Stoned or hung-over, that cat on the left had The Sintenel riff flowing through his veins.....such an under-rated guitarist.
For such young guys, they really had a handle on things.
Metal Gods ❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧
yes they were young here I believe Glenn is 70yrs old this year 2017
Rob Halford ❤❤❤
Glen Tipton = best ever
Well Done 👏 LADS!
Judas Priest forever
Black Sabbath gave birth to heavy metal and Judas Priest took it to college.
Very nice, informative video!
Excellent
They came out with good stuff with the work they mentioned, Hell bent for leather my fav.
Yeah that's my absolute favorite Priest album as well, Stained Class would be 2nd, not much into the 80's stuff anymore, but I ABSOLUTELY love British Steel.
By this time they had already laid a stellar foundation, sad wings, stained class , sin after sin . At this point they were the best metal/hard rock band.. British steel was coming baby…
Molly interviewed Bon Scott around this time, has to be the same studio with those very-70s curtains.
Just thinking that, must have been the same day or at least same week.
Acca dacca had JP as a supporting act in 79. Ooft. The two GOATs of rock and metal, respectively. So jealous of anyone who got to see that!!
@@dougieboxell6505 Was just reading about them touring in Rob's autobiography. Would've been epic to see.
Now i can see it in Rob! I just couldn’t when growing up. He appeared so macho
1977?!? Wow! I just bought my first Bee Gees 45 and by the end of the year, got a cassette of Led Zep2….11 years old. Thoughtful interview.
Young pups
Butter wouldnt melt with Robs young face 🙂
Glenn was already 30 here, and they hadn't really made it yet. Almost old by rock star standards.
@John Doe Remember, Ronnie James Dio was 40 when he started DIO. Like me, with my project :)
@@tenebrousapparition Nope. You're dumb and say boring things.
Oh god, this is brilliant stuff...
The two legends hardly ever smiled, and in the end Halford mumbled Uhr, yes, Australia, absolutely... He seems almost shy.
