Best "small" ship of any sci-fi universe I have EVER seen... I mean, there is no comparison, not even close, this ship is just soo good, so good looking, so practical and yet, it operates under realistic circumstances (except for handwaved engine)... amazing.
When our crew of hero’s acquires the Roci they all immediately level up. Alex especially comes almost immediately into his own. He finds his purpose in life. Holden becomes the true leader of the crew he was meant to be. The Roci is the fifth crew member and has a personality all her own. Gravity is also a character in the series, something most shows in the genre completely ignore. There has never been a finer Sci Fi show than The Expanse and I have been watching the genre since the first run of Star Trek TOS in the 60’s so I know of whence I speak.
this ship is the perfect example of size doesn't matter, it will still fight bigger ships and give a good punch. now if only other sci-fi series could come up with ships like these.
I think shield technology makes ships like these less viable in a lot of sci fi settings. Its hard for a small ship to pose any real threat to a capital ships shields, no matter how well armed for its size. In The Expanse the only real defences are point defence turrets against torpedo's and armor making all ships, even the biggest, quite vulnerable. The stealth ships are actually the best example of a small ship in the expanse which can none the less pose a lethal threat to capital ships. They are armed with much of the same firepower as much larger ships, especially rail guns, and are hard to detect which allows them to get close enough to use it.
Babylon 5 had the Whitestars, small corvette size warships, that through out the series, regularly fought much larger ships and came out victorious for their incredible speed and agility, combined with serious punch for a vessel of their size. Then in Star Trek, there was the most badass ship ever in Star Fleet, the Defiant Class destroyer, AKA The USS Ben Sisko's Mother-F**king Pimphand. A ship that was basically a bunch of guns and torpedo tubes with some engines strapped to them.
I thought it was called Ben MF Siskos Bitchslapper ^^ But its actually classified as an Escort, and the engine was an oversized beast intended for a ship three times the size of the Defiant.
The expanse has to be one of my favorite if not current favorite Sci fi shows. Great review on the Rocinante and a great video in general. Keep up the great content.
Don Quixote’s horse in Space - tough, durable and quite nice to look at. I usually compare smaller vessels to the Danube Class, and this Corvette comes in at around twice the length and around double the height, but as a ship it does feel better thought through and actually really suitable as the main cast’s vessel. Great Episode!
"Corvette class Light Frigate" is only confusing if you keep to the WWII-era USA naming conventions for naval vessels. Space isn't an ocean, there's no reason why naval conventions would apply to spacecrafts.
It is "corvette-class" because of its sizes. It is "frigate" because of its functionality and weapons. So it means that this ship is frigate in sizes of corvette. Simple, right? P.S.: "dreadnought class heavy cruiser" - it is just fat heavy cruiser as it says.
Lol, the Anubis class stealth destroyer is way bigger and has never been shown to be "big", so for a ship of those capabilities, yeah, it´s little, most warships are way bigger like eg the Donnager class and the UN warships that are often not even the size of the Donnager.
Would definitely like to see an updated video describing in more detail the upgrades the Ricinante received over time to include the rail run and advanced protomolecule armor 😎
As a spaniard I feel the need to clarify the meaning of the Roci's name. The fucking fandom wiki is wrong about the meaning of "rocinante" and is the first instance I've encountered of systematic corruption in a fandom wiki. It doesn't mean "used to be a workhorse" because for "ante" to mean "before" it has to be a prefix, not a suffix. We call forearms "antebrazos" and "the day before yesterday" is "anteayer". "-ante" as a suffix means "currently performing the referred action", and it's used to convert a nown into an adjective. We'd translate "a galloping horse" as "un caballo galopante". Given that one of the several spanish terms for "workhorse" is "rocín", the true meaning would be "currently a workhorse". It's a fucking pun, people! Just as the names of every other character in the book. The whole point of Quijote's horse being called Rocinante is that the horse hadn't been a workhorse up untill the point in which he rides it. It's a beautifully well used metaphor for the ship, which becomes a "warship for hire" AKA, a workhorse once it's renamed. This whole misconception is detracting from the reader's experience for both El Quijote and The Expanse saga. Don't believe your Spanish teachers, people: I don't presume to understand the subtleties of Shakespeare when the analysis of his works has been explained to me by a non native speaker. Have some respect for the classics. PS: this series, m8. It is the peanut butter and jelly to the bland loaf of bread that is my life. Keep them coming.
Thank you for clearing that up. What you are saying here seems pretty central to the language. If something that was a prefix in my language got used as a suffix people wouldn't understand it at all. When I check the source on fandom wiki is refers to the main wiki. And on the main wiki there is no discussion about this. If you had the time to write in there, maybe with a link to some grammatical rules in spanish you could change this misunderstanding.
I only knew this because of one piece, but thanks for the linguistic clarifications. I am surprised that the wiki, especially a fandom one is using an incorrect translation. Makes it kind of cooler tbh The Don Quixote Story has always been close to my heart because many reasons, nice to hear some new trivia.
Rocinante is like that because the pun is Rocín antes, that is to say, antes rocin (both used to be a rocin, and that he is before all the other rocines of the world), because you can say it both ways in spanish, so no, the wiki is not wrong. I am a native spanish speaker, and even in language/literature class we are taugh this because of how predominant the Quijote is when talking about spanish literature, hell it is even in the book "cuatro días se le pasaron en imaginar que nombre le pondría... y así después de muchos nombres que formó borró y quitó, añadió, deshizo y tornó a hacer en su memoria e imaginación, al fin le vino a llamar Rocinante, nombre a su parecer alto, sonoro y significativo de lo que había sido cuando fue rocín, antes de lo que ahora era, que era antes y primero de todos los rocines del mundo" (At the end he came to call it Rocinante, name which is tall and sonorous apperreance and meaningful of when it had been a Rocin, before of what it was now, that it was before and first of al the rocines of the world) So please dont go around confusing native english speakers
Just finished reading the six books. Dropped back in to get a refresher of your great video. The tv series and books are just unbelievably outstanding work.
If something docks with 10 light cruisers, it's not Batteship of any sort. It's some kind of moving repair platform, and it can have any military application only if it has FTL drive and light cruisers don't. If they don't have FTL, they may use space for shields, weapons, armor, etc.
Why Halcyon light Cruisers? They are pretty obsolete. Only reasons they were used in the Human-Covenant war was due to the UNSC running out of ships and because their design allows them to take a tremendous amount of damage. Only ship of that class that can really offer up much of a fight is the Pillar of Autumn, and that was because it was retrofitted with several upgrades
The Halcyons were refitted for the Covenant war making them a far more viable warship, but mostly they were being used as troop transports, for their huge internal space and survivability.
This needs shots of the internal structure. Please, Expanse team, teach mainstream sci-fi series how to build a rocket "the way god and Heinlein intended". Deck arrangement is properly "nose=up" not "nose=front" like in planetary vehicles.
Cool - and thanks for not including the spoilers... my FAVORITE ship BUT - boy does it chew though the ammo! ...and in one of the episodes they were literally stacking the ammo in the hallways in anticipation of combat... kinda reminds you of the DS9 Defiant - all you would want it to be - but over-powered can have drawbacks...
You forgot to mention that as the Rocinante this particular Corvette class ship was modified with a keel mounted rail gun because military grade torpedoes were both expensive and hard to source whereas tungsten slugs for the rail gun to fire were relatively cheap and easy to get.
But why call it a Corvette if its a light frigate? This makes no sense. It only confuses people, and there is already enough confusion with the size and ship classes in space combat/naval combat
Maybe they were trying to slip it past the politicians blocking funding... Like Spurious, Curious and Outrageous. Sorry, Furious, Glorious and Courageous, the 'Large Light Cruisers' that Admiral Jacky Fisher had built when he couldn't get funding for more battlecruisers. "But it's only a little Corvette, not very expensive and great for hunting rattletrap pirates..." While the admirals rub their hands with glee.
One comment - with the addition of a "rail gun", which is essential an artillery piece, it moves from "light frigate/heavy corvette" to heavy frigate class - with all the manoeuvrability of a corvette - making it an exceptionally capable "warship" - imagine a 'wolf pack' of them - they could even hunt down a battleship...

So interesting thing I've noticed about the Roci's PDCs compared to, say, the Donnagers. Where the Donnager's guns operate like traditional gatling-style guns (the entire barrel cluster rotates, each barrel firing when it reaches the point on the circle where the chamber is) the Roci's actually don't rotate. The barrels are all stationary but fire in sequence, like there are actually six (or however many barrels each PDC actually has) separate guns with their own chambers strapped together.
Eps like these makes me really want to watch The Expanse. I've only seen 2 episodes so far. I dont' do really well with drama-based shows, since I tend to like the lighter fair.
I love how the corvette-class is meant for use in groups with an excess of marines, and yet the most famous example of one has a crew of 5 and almost never any backup
One question what do the airlock doors rectract into? If you just look you can see that because the hull is angled the doors have nowhere to retract to.
Ok spacedock you probably already answered this before. Plus I just start watching the expanse in 2021. But anyway if the rociante is build vertical like a building. What keeps everything from just falling and going everywhere when she flys? The ship still flys on its belly horizontal right?
It can be a corvette and a frigate both. As far as I know a frigate is designed for long range missions without assistance. And can be of any size from a corvette up to a light cruiser.
In the book, they give a reason for the name (obviously) Rocinante means No Longer a WOrk Horse, basically a hidden meaning that Holden is now his own man and will do what he pleases.
46 meters is not that long and if you seen the series some of you can agree based on footage inside is seems a lot longer than that. Just the bridge area looks like 20m long counting where they keep their repair tools, gear storage, crew cabins and eating area is at least 30m and I'm not including the reactor, engine, small bay and the area where Holton and Naomi banged!
Really stupid question but one that i cant seem to figure out, i completely understand the whole orientation of the ship and how the thrust gravity works, but ive seen pictures of the ship where the lower airlock is oriented perpendicular to the orientation of the rest of the ship. What purpose does that airlock serve?
nari lutra I just looked it up and it also says that the Bilskirnir is the class name while the 'Biliskner' was Thors, they're very similar sounding though.
In Season 2 finale we are shown a cross-section diagram of Rocinante. If the torpedoes are indeed 8 meters long, then Rocinante is at least 100 meters long. Many talents on the web have been trying to fit the filmed sets into the "official" Rocinante metrics and schematics with mixed results. Best estimations, if the film sets are indeed to be fit inside the way they're described in the books and are implied in the show (i.e. on top of each other), put Rocinante at nearly 200 meters long. It's not small at all. The other explanation is that the film sets are much larger than what is implied in the novels, since they need to accommodate a whole filming crew. But when you're talking about space, anything is small, so it might still be quite large. It could also be described as 46m so the regular viewer can imagine it compared to a jet airliner, which most people have seen and can appreciate the size comparison.
The shape and profile of these ships are really similar to the Kushan Battlecruisers of Homeworld. To such a degree that it almost feels like a direct homage.
I think Alex said it best, the Roci is one fine lady. It would have been neat to see one in use by the MCRN with a full crew compliment. edit: I just noticed that railgun hole in the Roci when she was strafing the Osiris..I've seen that battle so many times and I always thought they ducked that railgun shot in time, damn.

Some of my favorite ships are on the small size. The Sovereign class star trek, Tachi the expanse, the Stalwart Class Frigate Halo, The Normandy SR2 Mass Effect, and one of my all time favorites is the BC304 Daedalus Class Stargate.
Also the Defiant Class Star Trek
@@808INFantry11X I couldn't agree more. You named some of my own favorite ships in that list.
There's just something incredible with the little boys packing a great punch or some other surprise that just makes them so perfect for protagonist ships
@@shayminthedoctor9663 honestly for me coming from a Navy background I have served on Carriers and had many friend who served and hinestly I wish i could have served destroyers because the ship are better run on smaller vessels.
@@shayminthedoctor9663 they way I see it they light and efficient
the Expanse is in my Opinion at the moment the Top of the Sci Fi Genre in TV, except Movies like Star Wars or Star Trek...
Its more realistic take on the material is so intense and thrilling and threatening. Great Show, i highly recommend Sci Fi Fans to watch.
and it has Great Ships...
Books are awesome and the show is great
Your breakdown and analysis is superb!!!!
Probably one of the best Science Fiction series to come out so far. At least in observing Newtonian physics.
The shot at 3:07 makes it look like an updated Eagle from Space 1999.
This ship also got refitted with a railgun in a more recent season (Mounted like the stealth ships).
Oh, you cursed UA-cam algorithm! How DARE you show me amazing content like this that might make me rewatch The Expanse!
Those are the Birds of Prey of the series. Very nice.
Thank you very much. Brilliant!
Finally The Roci!!!
One of the things I love about this is besides the drives not far fetched at all compared to say a star fleet ship besides defiant
This is so good. No reference to it being fictional 👌🏻❤️
Thank you for this well rounded much-needed information, please expand the expanse in more layman's term.
Yay more Expanse you are making my day!
This thing gives me 1999 HOMEWORLD vibes!
Yes! such a beauty.
I wish I could give you more than one thumb.
Love that little ship. Great video :)
Nice ad for MCRN navy. I'll take 10 of those.
One question what do the airlock doors rectract into? If you just look you can see that because the hull is angled the doors have nowhere to retract to.
Your narration is fantastic
Ok spacedock you probably already answered this before. Plus I just start watching the expanse in 2021. But anyway if the rociante is build vertical like a building. What keeps everything from just falling and going everywhere when she flys? The ship still flys on its belly horizontal right?
It can be a corvette and a frigate both. As far as I know a frigate is designed for long range missions without assistance. And can be of any size from a corvette up to a light cruiser.
i love how much the 4 of them love their ship
I watch & love this series! I often wonder if the ships are built modular or shell applied to skeletal spaceframe? Thanks for the info - great Stuff!!
I would have gone with "Screamin' Firehawk" instead of "Rocinante".
Sure, just advertise that it's a gunship.
Why DIDN'T they name her that?
Donkey balls.
Because Don Quixote was a favorite book of Jim Holden. To be honest all he does is fighting windmills. In space.
In the book, they give a reason for the name (obviously) Rocinante means No Longer a WOrk Horse, basically a hidden meaning that Holden is now his own man and will do what he pleases.
Could we get a video on the Babylon whitestar or the Hammerhead fighters from Space Above and Beyond?
The flying chisel with an upside-down coffee cup on the back ;)
Wow, I did not expect the Roci to be a Corvette, its combat capabilities are far beyond that.
Well, as they pointed out, she's not actually a corvette, but rather a light frigate and is simply called Corvette-Class
Have you done the Serenity (from Firefly) yet?
He has done the Firefly class ships.
Okay, thanks. I must have missed it looking through the archive videos.
Smaller than I expected. I figured it would be 100 meters. The show doesn't do scale very well with it's exterior shots.
I think the shot with it in the Donnager shows its scale quite well.
The interior shots do make it seem a lot larger than what it appears like on the outside.
Please do the hiigaran battlecruiser from Homeworld!
One of the greatest ships since the Millenium Falcon...
This video gave me a yuge nerdgasm, WELL DONE :)
You can see how great this ship is in the third episode of season 6
The Roci might be my fav ship of all time, in any scifi. And thats coming from a major star wars nerd.
yes ive been waiting for this
Anyone know where I could find that screenshot at 2:15 ? i think i found my new favorite desktop background
Excellent synopsis..
Excellent review!
One of the baddest ships in the galaxy, and soon, other galaxies. :)
When are you doing the ships from season 4?
Can you do the Bilskirnir-class ship from Stargate please, it's so cool.
TheArrogantOne If you mean the 'Biliskner', that was the name of Thor's ship not the actual class of ship
i think, though i could be wrong, that Thors ship was the "name ship" of the class, hence the class being the Biliskner class
nari lutra I just looked it up and it also says that the Bilskirnir is the class name while the 'Biliskner' was Thors, they're very similar sounding though.
One thing the narrator the MCRN Corvette had in copious amounts:
*Plot armor*
Any possibility you could do a review of a Tyranid bioship or in you Vs. series a battle between the Borg and the Tyranids?
Awesome! More expanse please!
I want to see the battle of Leuctra with the Laconian Navy kicking butt.
Well I guess the Falcon just dropped to number two of my favorite space ships. Roci is so bad ass especially since it uses true Newtonian physics.
I love this ship. She is my siren song.
