- heres a few tips and tricks I have learned building serive beds over several years, this is a good example of a RKI service bed I refurbished and installed on a 2018 Chevy silverado. a look at all the knapheide foor latches, door struts, knaphied tail lights wiring harness back up camera, headache rack, cargo strap system and rhino lining.
Ok I sure you know your business, just want to clarify,your calling the over cab ladder rack a headache rack.A true headache rack is a protective screen or louver that cover the back window so materials can’t come through the window
Yea it's one of those talking a videoing at the same time. Rubbing your belly and patting your head. Terminology is extremely hard to regurgitate while filming for me
I bought a truck over the weekend in Corpus Christi, Tx and they did the same thing as you did to the service bed. Maybe you did it!!

I try to do as good as I can with what I have, just.a one man show with limited resources. But I enjoy it which helps
I'm rebuilding my first service bed. It's actually going to be an overlander bed, some fun fabricating to be done!

I'm looking for a service body for a 2017 F350 short box. Hard to find a used body for a short box truck so will probably have to buy new. Enjoyed your video.

Great craftsmanship! Thanks for posting this. Curious. . .do most of your customers bring you new or pre-owned chassis to mount the body? Just wondering what the market for refurbished service beds looks like. Thanks!
Most of the trucks are preowned, half of the beds are new the other half is refurbished

One bolt per corner on a lumber rack is enough for the rack but what about a load & emergency stop 😬
@@willy8d898 pretty sure majority of trucks are mounted this way. Look up the shear stress on 4 3/8s bolts. It's well over 100k pounds
I haven't searched through all the comments yet but I'm in the middle of refurbishing a reading bed. What kind of paint did you use I use some Rust-Oleum white but it seems like it's way too white.
On this one was a PPG oxford white, pretty much what I always use if its white because it's far cheaper then any other color

I'm rebuilding my bed. Im not sure what bed it is but it has MCB on the hardware. I need to replace a few doors and handles/locks and the fender area. The hinges on my doors looks the same as these doors as well as the lock mechanism in the doors. What doors would you say would work for replacements doors? Thank you.
So I did it on my last bed build, 14 guage steel plate for the door, weld on hinges and knaphiede door handles. If we use Thinner metal we usually build shelves or something attached to the door to provide structure. But steel sheet is basically all we use.
@@townsendliving9750 perfect! Knapheide a good source for weld on hinges or are you just using the stock hardware and welding on a rod to the 14ga to act as a hinge?
@@enriquealvarez2145 hist using generic hinges from a weld supply store. Google weld on hinges and they'll pop right up. Like 5 bucks a piece

FYI stainless steel against another dissimilar metal will cause galvanic corrosion. Meaning you used a stainless steel river directly into a steel body, add moisture, you have galvanic corrosion. Everyone thinks that just adding stainless steel hardware to steel bodies will prevent rust when actually it’s just going to have the same level of rust as a poorly prepared hardware item/steel or aluminum body will have.
I'll look Inot it, this video is several years old I believe, I could do a update, last time I seen the truck it was doing pretty well. Stainless steel is basically just steel without the carbon right?
@@townsendliving9750 steel actually has lower carbon then stainless. When stainless steel is prepared from steel, chromium, nickel, nitrogen and molybdenum is added. Stainless on its own is far better at preventing corrosion but things get gnarly when you mix dissimilar metals and moisture. We see it all the time after years in the field with the bodies we work on!
@@thebeardofpepe I havent watched this video in a long time nor do I remember the details, but I think i used stainless over bed liner. But these trucks do 70k miles a year, and usually get wrecked before the 5 year mark. It's good to know on future projects, but guarentee these will outlast the truck by far

Great work! Anyone know of an upfitter that makes slideout trays for the 52" wide horizontal compartment of a Knapheide body? I may have to fab my own, but curious if anyone knows of a upfitter making them already?
I make stuff like that in house, usually I have a hard time making something for something that isn't right in front of me, and. Having fit and finish perfect when it arrives. But we usually make all kinds of accessories for service bodies.
Or you could just buy the slides and build your own, like I’m planning on doing. But that’s one of the best up-fitters for service beds, with great customer service.
Would you happen to know how to wire the knaphide strobe light function for the knaphide lights
I have done it before but can't remember off the top of my head. There were instructions when I got the lights, let me see if my guys remember

So those tail lights cover the two hole set ups they normally come in?
The two hole set up is a box bolted on the back, remove the box and cut out a hole for the plug on the lights, they have to be mounted upside down to cover the existing hole.

I’m familiar with the duramags they are EXCELLENT I have a knapide on my current truck and wish I had my duramag back

Unfortunately the only place is knapheide unless you can find some used ones, which is usually not gonna happen, so straight from manufacturer or local knapheide dealer might have them in stock

I have built a few, I am working on two right now, gonna make a video Tomorrow of both of them. I have made some welding trucks and soo a 24 foot long service bed for a semi truck.
