    Like so many other, I'm commenting on an old but VERY helpful video! I bought this (or some variation) of this gauge. For reference my bike is a 1984 Honda Magna (VF700C). After watching your videos and doing additional research, I was able to get almost everything connected. The tach, speedometer, signals, high beam indicator, oil light (I think), and 6th gear overdrive all work. The fuel gauge does NOT work as this is not supported by my bike.
    Thanks for making this video. 2 years later it's still helping!

    FUEL GAUGE
    Some of the posts on this and other videos state that grounding the fuel gauge wire (blue and white) will cause the fuel gauge to stop flashing. With my ones (3 of them) this was not the case. I have found that you need to ground it via a resistance of between 30 to 500 ohm. Anything more or less wont have any effect. 500ohm displays 1 bar (of 8) i.e. almost empty. 30ohm displays 8 bars (full). (about 330ohm is half full etc.) So if grounding the fuel wire doesn't work for you, try grounding it through a resistor between 30 and 500 ohms.

    thanks....I finally figured out the speedometer setting and how to scroll through the "menu". Now this has helped me get the tach working. Thank you, my gauge is now fully functional.

      how do you figure out the speedometer setting? I can't figure out how to get the first 3-digit number in the menu...

    • @1075twist
      @1075twist 7 років тому

      Ruben Storie I just picked a random number like 750 then I downloaded a GPS speedometer app on my phone and I rode the bike and compared the spedometer to the GPS speed if the speedometer was too slow I would add 25 for example 775 and try again. I have a 19 inch front wheel and to the best of my memory I ended up at 852 for the 3 digit number

    • @kaotickustoms
      @kaotickustoms 7 років тому

      +1075twist I know the number you end up with is the tire circumference divided by something else but idk what you divide by. I have a 21" front rim so I hope the rim isn't too big cause the 3-digits only go to 999 and you were almost there with a 19" rim

    My son's went to the 12grand as well, and the signal wire was not attached yet. but fixed it self after recycling the speedo on and off a few times. We installed onto a pit bike, no movement yet on the tach. I don't think the frame is grounded, will be my next step. fingers crossed. thanks for the video

    Update to my previous response a year ago (84 Honda Magna 700):
    I still have the speedometer and it works. I actually ordered a second one that has a speedometer cable port, but even though it looks the same, it's not nearly as smooth. I'm going to continue to use the original gauge I bought. In order to clean up the look of the bike, I found speed sensor cable on AliExpress that, in theory, will replace my existing speedometer cable with a digital sender that will communicate with the gauge. I'll update when I get it and try it out. The fuel sensor has been the BIGGEST issue. My gauge blinks constantly. Grounding the sensor cable does not work for me. HOWEVER, I have found that it has a resistance range of about 10 ohms to 90.5ohms. At 10 ohm resistance, it shows full. At 90.5 ohms it shows the very last bar. I'm currently experimenting with a way to have it show full then empty when the bike hits reserve. The original gauges only indicated low fuel (not actual level) so this would be a good OEM replacement if it works.

    I'm glad it helped, to bad the needle is decentered! My speedsensor died when I tried to make the gauge milge to be exactly as the old. hocked the sensor to a tablefan and glued some magnets to the blades. But I guess the sensor got overheated when "driving" in 188km/h that long. Got a little pulsgenerator to fix the milage and waithing for an new sensor

    how do determine how far away from center to place the speedometer sensor. the rest of it makes sense with the tire size and number of magnets but the farther from center the sensor is the longer it will take the slower it should read, so is there a spec. on how far from center it should be to read properly?

    • @DRugfree1987
      @DRugfree1987  8 років тому +1

      pretty sure it doesn't matter. if you have one magnet and the wheel turns once. the sensor will pick up one rotation no matter where you put. but that just my logic on it. manual never said where it needs to be.

      I had just the same thoughts ...

    • @Wintersdark
      @Wintersdark 7 років тому

      As the OP said, it doesn't matter. You need to configure your front wheel circumference (in MM) in the service menu, and it's determining speed by counting wheel revolutions times configured circumference.
      It'll take the same amount of time for the magnet to go around close to the axle or far away, as 1 revolution of the wheel is 1 revolution of the wheel. You're needlessly complicating it; a magnet towards the outside of the wheel will travel faster and further, but it'll pass the sensor (once per revolution) just as many times no matter where it is.

    • @user-neo71665
      @user-neo71665 6 років тому

      Only (minor) thing about putting magnets on the wheel is the closer to the axle the less it will throw off wheel balance. Chances are you won't even notice it. Other than that it doesn't matter where on the wheel the magnets are placed. The correct tire size is important to the computer counting so it knows that one magnet is spinning one time in XXXX amount of distance. The sensor doesn't care if the magnet travels a one inch circle for the tire to cover it's diameter in distance or if it takes a 20 inch circle to cover given tire diameter in distance.
      Now if the magnets starts traveling faster than the wheel they are attached to you have major problems.

      Tero Rantanen what are you grounding it to? sometimes parts on the bike are insulated so it won't make a good ground. guage works off resistance. more resistance lower the fuel level, less resistance higher the fuel level. grounding that wire to the frame should give you a full tank reading. unless you have a defective guage

    Could you tell me how did you use the fuel sensore?

    • @DRugfree1987
      @DRugfree1987  4 роки тому

      If you want it to stop flashing. Run it the bare metal. Ground the wire to the frame and the gauge will think the tank is full

      DRugfree1987 i know but i want to use this corretly. I have bought a fuel level sensor. But i cant connetc it. The fuel level sensor has a green and a blue cable and i tried any option but when the tank is empty it shows full. And if i fill a little fuel it starts flashing.

    К какому выводу катушки подключается тахометр?

      конкретно этот прибор не работает от катушки. видишь чувак к генератору импульсов подоткнул, он заработал.
      этих приборов есть 3 вида, есть те которые работают от катушки, а есть те которые нет. здесь прибор хуй знает подо что предназначен, я такой же купил, но от катушки он не пашет.

      sounds like your main jet needs to be cleaned out or replaced. also could be a air leak somewhere along the boot of the carb

      what year? Just finished installing this gauge on my 94 Virago 750. Have everything hooked in but the speed sensor as of right now. Ended up unpinning and repining the main connector on the gauge to work with the Virago's harness.

      hi. are you sure that connect the rpm wire to the same rpm wire of the virago? i try it some times but doesn´t works. I only read the rpm if i connect the rpm wire to the positive sparkplug, the problem is that the spark plug goes down and doesn´t works. Could you contact or take a pinture? thanks.

      Jaime Netma yes I did. Make sure you also have the ground hooked up. Trying to upload a pic for you. I just re pinned the harness to fit in the stock harness...
      I'll make a UA-cam video with the wire diagram and the pin connections.
      Any luck on the fuel gauge stop flashing?

      Kamen Rider and how would someone do that? Doesn't matter they sent me a new one

    • @sniperyaz
      @sniperyaz 6 років тому

      Only knowledgable can do that i also had universal speedo not same brand but theissue is the same i did diy dissasemble pulling it out the needle and put it in the right place then put a little glue the reason in mine is the needle looses to the pin where it attach and almost my needle dettached to its pin

    • @DRugfree1987
      @DRugfree1987  6 років тому

      Kamen Rider the speedometer is glued together. It was a faulty meter so they sent me another one. But I did drill a tiny hole. Pushed it back in place then kept it as spare incase I want to use it for something else

    • @sniperyaz
      @sniperyaz 6 років тому

      Good thing you still claimed for replacement even you drilled. Here in my country if you did anything to product intentionally and suddenly there is factory defect they will not accept it for warranty even scratch they will say its users fault..

    • @DRugfree1987
      @DRugfree1987  6 років тому

      Kamen Rider what part of the speedometer was defective dont you get? The needle went backwards, so the sent me new one. Meaning I have the new one and the faulty one.

      Hey @dRugfree1987 I got everything working except the rpm is showing 2x actual rpm. I think I set the cylinders as 2 but my bike is a single cylinder motorcycle Any idea how I can revert back to single cylinder? Thanks for the great video though!

    • @DRugfree1987
      @DRugfree1987  7 років тому

      that I don't know. all I know is that the gauge comes preset to one cylinder then wont go back after you change the settings. how do you have the rpm wire installed?

    • @Wintersdark
      @Wintersdark 7 років тому

      It's because it's designed for a 2 or 4 cylinder bike with "dual fire" ignition. That is, for a 2-cylinder, it's sparking on BOTH cylinders when it needs to spark in one - it's sparking then for the power in one cylinder and exhaust in the other. So the gauge is looking for 2 spark signals per 4 strokes, whereas a single cylinder engine is providing 1 spark signal per 4 strokes - reads twice as high. There ARE adapters to fix this, as "single fire" ignitions have the same problem with the gauges.
      The gauge does not have built in support for single fire 2 cylinder ignitions or single cylinder engines.
