Watching this in Australia , as I couldn’t get to the performance here. Truly stunning, really enjoyed that performance. The main dancers were particularly expressive and really looked like they enjoyed it and put their heart and soul into it. Well done👏👏👏👏💗
I love this ballet. The score is one of my Stravinsky favorites. I have never found a video of NYCB's version. Thank you for sharing. A great, great pleasure. I have watched it several times. Thank God for UA-cam!!!
The composer Alexi Machavariani (from the old noble Georgian family) was the Georgian composer, who was born and died in Georgia (Republic of). He was often invited to the Russian Opera, the Russian Soviet Music events and on. One of his famous ballet compositions was Otello and it was perfomanced in in Bolshoi Theater in times of USSR. It was a masterpiece and also the ballet dancer who performed Otello, was a legendary Georgian ballet dancer Vakhtang Chabukiani (you can click in You-tube his name and will enjoy of his incomparable Otello in the ballet world). The dancer created such a great speed of otello that neither Russian Soviet nor European dancers could run over this master class performance. So after his death none could take the step in such dance speed, and because of it Otello, composed by the great Georgian composer Alexi MACHAVARIANI is not is on ballet list anymore. Anotheryoung great Georgian ballet dancer Nika(Nikolai) Tsiskaridze which also was invited to dance in Moscow Bolshoi Theater, approached to this Otello, but in some circumstances it didn’t work… Also George Balanchine, the well-known Master and Choreographer of AMERICAN BALLET was the Georgian origin too, from the old Georgian noble family) who immigrated to US after Russian revolution. He had very warm relations with Stravinsky, composer of Fire Bird and Petrushka, which Balanchine created for the American ballet. He was the son of famous Georgian composer Meliton Balanchivadze and brother of famous composer Andrea Balanchivadze, who was on very friendly terms with Shostakovich.. There is another Georgian great ballet dancer who performed in Bolshoi Theater, Nika (Nikolai) Tsiskaridze too.
and before USSR Gergia was part of Russian impire. These 2 cultures are integrated into each other already centuries and these are Russian who set up there academical culture , schools etc. In ALL former Soviet republics roots of classical and academical studing are Russians and as u know without a school you are nobody. U are welcome
You somehow forgot to mention that Balanchine's mother was Russian-Maria Nikolaevna Vasilyeva. And when asked who he was by nationality, he replied: "I am Georgian by blood, Russian by culture, and a Petersburger by nationality", "I was lucky, I was born in the same Petersburg that Tchaikovsky walked in.»

@@AllieB-11.11 I understand, that's fine but neither Stravinsky modern, for me non melodious music nor this kind of dancing resonates with me as I love classical music, classical ballet. But I respect those that enjoy it.
Thank you for posting all three parts, but Emeralds now is blocked in the USA. Any idea why? It was not blocked previously and is my favorite of the three.
I don't like rubies as much as diamonds or emeralds.. Not sure if it's just this particular performance, but it felt a little disjointed. Was it intentional? I'm not sure.
Yes, right word, disjointed AND frantic, not melodious. AND as someone commented it Is More like a musical. or good gymnastics also like the men training on a running course a few times. The Diamonds Is a ballet, even With real, melodious music! Tchaikovski.
I dont know who coached this but they cant get into the floor& not having the fun or athleticism Mr B wanted especially in this American section of Jewels
Calle 1959 I also saw the rehearsals at ROH on UA-cam, and it seems they were more entertaining, yes. Maybe because I love their principals. But the style is all different. You can't take away all that Vaganova running through your veins. Vaganova style remains the most royal and elegant to me, but in staging Balanchine, ROH have an advantage because they have dancers from all over the world, from different schools, and a more diverse repertoire.
See the full version with Nioradze and Tsiskaridze, it's here under Rubis, they were great. Especially Tsiskaridze ua-cam.com/video/a0ko2aszcAo/v-deo.html
Simona, current Vaganova's rector Nikolai Tsiskaridze also danced it but with more "hutzpa" and playfulness, he was amazing dancer before he became Vaganoiva's rector and was a Bolshoi star for 21 years. See his version, it's more charismatic (also from Mariinsky with Nioradze) and tell me what you think. .ua-cam.com/video/a0ko2aszcAo/v-deo.html
The Royal's version was brilliant! Maybe NYCB still owns this, but RB (I saw it with Lamb, Mc Rae, and Hamilton), really did Balanchine proud. Steven, good lord, those chaînés, tho
I love this production and the performance and I don't wish to do it down but the filthy ballet shoes and the stage seem like an infuriatingly unprofessional oversight.
I'm a student in a ballet school and I hope I'll never have to dance Jewels in my life :D I don't like the music or the choreography at all. I didn't like the dancers here either.
@rando Lol, that's so true. The music is the worst part of it :D Add awkward jerky choreography, costumes that wouldn't do justice to anyone and dancers that are manically smiling like they knew they're torturing the audience...
maybe you should go back to the farm and get a job planting potatoes ..you sound like an unsophisticated farmer. Give that place in your ballet school (Idaho Dance and Animal Husbandry Academy?) to someone who can appreciate it, fool.
@rando i agree with you!! The better one Is the Diamonds, nice parts AND Tchaikovski music AND with María Khoreva i never saw Emeralds AND the Rubies i don' t like at all.

Flesha dn Bone brought me here. So glad it introduced me to Balanchine's Jewels. Easily becoming one of my favorite ballets.
Fadeyev has the right jazzy snap here, the others need to let themselves go a little more. Always enjoyable to watch this masterwork!

The Karinska costumes still look great!
Да. Её подлинное имя : Варвара Андреевна Каринская. Она - русская.
They use their hips a lot in this like Balanchine wanted but they seem really stiff. My favorite production of jewels has been the royal ballets
