As much as I admire David Harvey for his scholarship and in particular his Reading Capital classes, I think he is seriously misguided in his hope for a reorganization of the working classes in the urban setting in order to achieve social change. First of all, the concept of working class is highly undertheorized - also by Marx himself: is it a social economic category or a subjective cultural one? At least the concept is very complex and paradoxical - this he himself admits. But also important and related to this is the 'real' situation: what do these people (which Harvey mentions in his example) as a group generally think in terms of solidarity and social change? Overall not much. For example in western Europe right now in the refugee discussion; it is the often members of the working class that support in elections right wing repressive xenophobic policies and it is often members of the working class that take to the street to fight the people that fled from war and misery. In order to reorganize the left needs to give up the dream of the working class, the factory and also that of the city, in my opinion, and propose a resistance along ecological lines - it is much more tangible for people than class politics and more unifying: everyone needs clean air and clean water. Besides it touches upon the most difficult problem today which is not production (it is easier to change circumstances) but consumption.
a great ecosocialist perspective, but one thing don't exclude the other. We still have toorganize locally and regionally the working class. And this is a good strategy for a more organic organization
