Música apacible, para mitigar el pernicioso vivir en una ciudad llena de ruidos. Vasks es uno entre los músicos que surgieron en las repúblicas bálticas cuando pudieron separarse de la URSS, Arvo Parts es el más conocido de ellos; en general, sus músicas son de carácter trascendente cuando no derechamente religiosas. Todos ellos importan el regreso de la gran música a dimensiones humanas de las que se había venido separando.

What happened recently in the Baltic States? The best contemporary "classical" music comes from there.
People trained in the USSR, where the composer training programmes were not controlled by trends that emphasized the torture of audiences with sounds as unpleasant as possible. Then they liberated their creativity from the straight jackets of the USSR thinking but the aversion to torturing audiences remain in their psyche. Some audiences enjoy not being tortured. Other audiences have been tortured into ideological submission so poo poo this kind of music for not torturing them.
