- Опубліковано 15 лют 2019
- I have been wanting to build a rear drawer storage system for my Jeep Wrangler for a while now and I finally pulled the trigger. I have plans for a full storage system, but first I needed to build a secure platform for it to all be fastened to. In this video I'll show you how I built my platform, give you a quick look at the Dometic 30 Drawer fridge I'll be using and I've you all insight on the full system to come.

Great idea! Reminds me of my woodshop days in high school, 4 years of woodworking bliss.
Yes! DIY TR was the best!! Please do more DIY videos 🙌
just added the board to mount my fridge slider. Using the screws to mark where the holes should be drilled worked fantastic. Got it in the first try spot on!! thanks
A lot of work has been done since filming this video, but it will be a bit before the next video in this project is posted. You can visit TrailRecon on Instagram or Facebook for photo updates.
Hi Brad, did you take a look at Goose Gear? Not sure if they would have what you need, but take a look either way. Might get some ideas, even though you are already building this.
I did take a look at their stuff and it is amazing quality. It's a little out of my budget and there is just something gratifying about a custom DIY project.
There's one video of Brad at camp going over rigs with GG plating professor!
I’m interested in seeing your finished product. I build inserts for FJs, 4Runners, and jeeps and I get a lot of requests for something that doesn’t take the whole back of the vehicle or so the dog can ride on top. The drawer fridge is a nice option (and I have found for lunch at the job site) and it saves space. GG is $$ and a although a lot of engineering has gone into their stuff, imo, a well built wood cargo insert rides quieter. I’m working with a JK guy now on a 1-drawer/fridge drawer platform. Looking forward to your next video.
Goose Gear is nice but a rip off. Your paying 1k for coated Plywood.
Love the drawer fridge concept way better than conventional! You could almost stack 2 if you need more cooling storage. Can’t wait to see the implementation.
Very slick find of the drawer fridge! We really like the direction you’re taking with this storage system!
Brad nice job. Easy simple, good project. I look forward to your videos.
This will be a interesting mod, not sure I'm a fan yet but have liked almost everything else you have done. Looking forward to seeing the final results hope it turns out great for your needs and I'm sure its going to inspire many other ideas down the road.
I am so stoked to see where this goes! I’ve been trying to design a drawer system for my 2 door for a while now. I love that compact fridge and hope it lives up to the Dometic name.
I'm so excited to get this finished but a ton more work to go. You can get updated pictures on Instagram and Facebook.
Great job on the floor / base piece, really looking forward to this interior build !
Thank you!
Nice work, can't wait to see the end result!
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out! Thanks for filming and sharing!
Can't wait to share it with you guys, thank you!
I picked up the same fridge for my cherokee. Sits flush with my wheelwell bed platform. Great design!
Great video as usual Brad.
Cheers from your Swedish fan in North Carolina 73
Another great video and guide. Thanks Brad!
Brad , this is going to be very functional for you . Can't wait to see the next video to see your vision. Take care my friend .
I think it is really going to be perfect, thank you!
Great job. Always love your videos!
Really good job and very informative video. Congrats.👍
Semper Fi, and thank you for your service 🇺🇸. Love your content, keep the great videos coming. This project looks to be very interesting
Thank you!
Awesome, looking forward to the 8/20 stuff
Fantastic video. Not something I plan on doing but still enjoyed watching the process you used to create the platform. Very professional and a nice change from some other channels...
I always love seeing the springer in the background of your videos
Rocket is in the garage often, he just doesn't always make it on camera.
Great video I’ll be excited to see more, when you get ready.
Thank you! I can't wait to share what's next.
Thank you! I've been trying to figure out a way of matching the shape in the back of my Jeep, higher up, and this will be perfect.
Well explained! I like it!
cool- looking forward to seeing the final product.
I can't wait until it's finished, but still a lot of work ahead.
Very cool looking forward to see the final build.
Thanks! I can't wait to get it all finished.
Great job, Brad! As a lifelong craftsman and furniture maker, with the tools involved, I wouldn't have done a thing different.
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Always interested in what you have going. Gives me lots of ideas.
Great to hear, thank you!
Nice job.. looking forward to seeing the final product
Thank you! I can't wait until it's finished.
Love the drawer fridge!!! Awesome project
I'm pretty excited to get it installed! Thanks!
Nice, I'm building a camping trailer right now, excited for the rest of this series!
Sounds like a cool project!
Great video Brad!
As always a great vid.
Love your videos! Was just in San Diego for business and was watching for the TrailRecon beast :)
Thanks! Hope you had a great stay while you were here!
Can't wait to see more.
Me too!
Looking forward to seeing it I need some ideas for my XJ. 😋
My sons and I are already brainstorming ideas for the XJ and WJ.
Looking forward to your build.
I can't wait to show what progress we have made!
Can’t wait to see the final product!!!
Me either! Thanks for your help so far!
Hey that's not fair. You already know how is going to look. We have to wait 🤣🤣
Great video Brad, the fridge is awesome, nice shirt by the way👍👍
Thank you!
Ive got the 95L fridge in my FJ and its a pain getting into it sometimes. I've always wanted to install the fridge slide and thanks to your video, you gave me a way to install one without drilling my floor. Can't wait to see the finished project.
95L is a big fridge, you must be eating well out on the trail!
@@TrailRecon I like to pack enough ribeyes to feed a group of 5 for a week haha.
Awesome video Devil Doc
Great idea thanks
I'm glad you are doing this... I'm going to do this for my YJ.... I have the whole thing planned out in my head and a lil drawn out on paper... Just need to figure out the type materials to use. I'll most likely be riveting my systems structure together and using rivnuts installed in the floor bed to mount it... I'm going to see which materials you use and see if that works for me... Oh... and great idea with the cardboard... I'll be doing that.... Keep upi the great work!!!
It was fun thinking about this project and now that it is starting to come to life is so cool. DIY projects are so rewarding... best of luck on your storage system.
I am also in the process of building a storage cabinet in my 17 JKU To solve the problem of accessing the storage under the I will build the cabinet with a 2x4 foot running the entire depth of the cabinet and have one on each side of the jeep rear storage comprtment. This will allow access to the pan and have enough room for a folding table to slide into. One note I Don't do a lot of overland but 2- 24 " or so 2x4s won't add that much weight, and it will be low weight, as in low from the center of gravity. I am going to also leave off the wings as
Joedie Poole suggested or have them hinged to be able to remove if necessary. Love your channel looking forward to the rest of this build.
Nice one !
Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome!
great video and some good tips for storage
Thanks! I can't wait to share with you all the finished project.
I built a box for the back of my TJ out of an old cabinet. My spare tire fits in there snug and if I ever wanted to I could use it as a security box. I coated mine with Flex Seal Liquid which, truthfully was a pain in the butt but ultimately it came out really well.
I built something similar in my jk, on top of the plywood I trimmed & glued a piece of rubber diamond plate so it would be slip proof for my dogs . Great video
I think the rubber mat idea is a good one, but there will be very little exposed area on the platform once the storage system is built, so just going to do a think protective coating for now.
I’m constantly fine tuning the rig like everyone, thanks for sharing your ideas. I know the trails you guys run and I would be nervous with the exposed components on the fridge. My guess is you will be swapping that one out soon! Look forward to that review! Hard to beat the ARB for toughness! 🤙🏻
We will be enclosing the fridge but ensuring it can breath, so not too worried about that aspect.
Nice job. When you use a wood hole bit like you did, use the wood hole drill bit first to drill out your recess, then drill out your center hole.
Hey Brad, looks awesome! If you want to minimize the splintering while cutting with your circular saw put some masking tape along the cut line, works great! Also, for a coating a bedliner would be great, I know monsterliner works great for roll on applications as well! Keep up the DIY ideas!
Something I'll have to be sure to do in the future, thank you!
The First TR product team up with a mfg. and take it to production! Great job
LOL! No way, that's too much work! I just want to get this built and go hit the trail.
Cant wait you are my most watched UA-camr
I say that cheep carpet stuff for the bord and in black. It will look stock if add jeep logo too. Looks good so far!! Love it
That's a great suggestion. Because the storage system that I'm building will cover 90% of the platform you won't see much of it anyway.
Raptor Liner. Comes with a spray gun. Using it on the inside of my CJ5 project.
I hear that's good stuff!
@@TrailRecon I raptor lined my jeep last year. amazing product. super easy! thanks for the video. I have been wanting to build some type of drawer system in the back of my 2 door
One more fun project :-) Keep it simple.
I love doing project like this. Thanks!
Future woodworking tip for drilling holes. Placing the screws into the truck is a great idea just make sure that they're deep enough that you don't mess the threads up then drill only a 1/8in hole, put duck tape or masking tape over them. Driller your counter sunk hole with a spade bit and then grill your final hole, then remove the tape. (This trick will keep the wood from chipping out).
Great job and I love your Channel. 👍👍👍🚙❤️
Palm Beach FL.🐊👣🌴⛅
Thanks! I need to work on my woodworking skills.
That is sweet! I've gotta figure something like that out for my Bronco because as of right now, it's toss and go and hope I don't need to find anything in the back haha
Great video thank you!
Thank you!
Love those DIY projects, especially when you realize how much you've saved!
Looking good! Looking forward to seeing the finished set-up!
Does the new fridge have a freezer section? Will you be able to take some ice cream on the trail?
You are right, I am saving a ton. To buy the system I'm making would be a few thousand dollar investment. This will be a few hundred bucks, but a lot of labor hours. No freezer on this fridge.
That fridge is small!! lol Cant wait to see the finished build!
It's a bit smaller, but I think it will be okay for my needs.
Nice Work 👍
Thank you!
Brad, well done. Looking forward to seeing the full setup. Can I make a suggestion? Losing that storage place under your rear is disappointing, but maybe it doesn’t have to be! Consider putting a hatch or something under the double drawers. Think like Han Solo... it could be a smugglers compartment! The only way to access it might be to take the drawer all the way out, but that could be perfect for something you would want to hide, or something you never, ever need but will be glad you have it someday (extra ammo, a basic emergency tool kit, a stack of cash and extra passports, a few MREs and an emergency blanket...)
I thought long and hard about loosing the storage system and I think you could come up with a James Bond style access door if you wanted and maybe something I might do down the road. But the amount of storage I'm about to gain is going to more than make up for it. No more MRE's for me! LOL!
Wow! I'm just about to do the same thing!!!
Great job. Planing on doing this on my two door
I would love to rip out the rear seat of my wife's 2 door and do this, but she insist on keeping the rear seat.
@@TrailRecon I'm thinking on a Setup up easy to remove, I live in Texas so there not much to camp around here, at least nothing really Jeep worth, so my setup has to be an easy and non permanent. The 2 doors can hold lots of cargo without the rear seat. To me it's the perfect overland Plataform for a couple, but it has to be well planned to make it practical.
My storage chaos is strictly chaotic.
I sleep in the back of my JKU while camping so this wouldn't work for me but I'm still looking forward to seeing the final product.
do you have a goose gear platform?
@@robertalbright224 I do not. I just have some simple pads that link together and 3-inch close cell foam pad, both from home improvement store. I barely fit (with the dog and all my gear) and I'm 5'8". Don't see how taller people do it.
Have you considered just elevating the whole sleep platform and putting tubs underneath?
@@45auto I am just under 6'3" and i sleep well in my JKU.
What I do is all my gear goes on the drivers side of the jeep, back seats down, I have a 1/4" plywd transition covering the gap made when the seat backs are down. Those gaps are filled with seldom used items. Then I move the front passenger seat forward and in goes the pillow, air mattress etc. Voila, now you have a safe and cozy sleeping space.
Hmmm.....I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone downsize on frig space. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.
Let's hope it turns out ok.
I was thinking put one side by each, or on top of each other. They would stack nice!
After watching Ronny Dahl's drawer fridge video I'm not sure I'd run one, but I look forward to seeing what you end up thinking down the trail.
Same. I want to see the final product!
Hi Brad, love your videos! you always talk about how you don't want to block the visibility so you keep the back of your jeep clear. I had the same problem until i found a rear view mirror that uses a camera ( Auto Vox X1Pro) since i installed it i keep much more staff in my jeep on a daily basis. Not a perfect solution, especially when it rains, but i love it so far... Just wanted to share. Thx
I've thought about getting a rear and forward facing camera system... maybe down the road when the budget allows. Thanks!
The tool is called a "contour gauge".
I was about to post and ask for that tool's name. Thanks
I would consider purchasing a Dometic fridge more if they were an sponsor of TR... Are you listening Dometic?
Heck ya!
With 4 tubes & longer bolts you could have some space under that platform to store stuff. Maybe add a support in the middle
That thing would fit perfectly under my platform
Looking forward to seeing long term review on the fridge
Fingers crossed it holds the test of time.
How has it been having it? Is it big enough for a few days out?
This is gold!
Thanks so much for this vid. Considered going with Goose Gear floor system, but this it gold since I do not have the money for their system.
Now side rear side storage system, again like Goose Gear… did you do one for that I missed? Or maybe an idea for you if not.
Needa do a ham radio and a GPS and a storage system in the xj would honestly look clean
We are going to do something with the other Dometic fridge......
Nice woodwork, and very helpful instructions and tips. I'm interested how that Dometic fridge works. I currently have an Alpicool fridge that fits under my Aries Security Bin. This Dometic might be a good replacement since those 40-50L fridges don't fit. I'm concerned about the exposed compressor and circuitry though. I can't wait to see the finish product. I recommend a backup camera or rear view camera when it is difficult to see at the rear anymore. I put the AEV one (expensive) for backup camera, and an Amazon one (affordable, $70) for my full time rear view camera since putting the AEV fuel caddy totally blocked my rear view. The $70 camera also has a front facing camera, and records when your driving. Install is easy too.
We are going to make sure the rear compressor is well secured, already in progress. A rear and forward facing camera might be a future upgrade. Thanks!
I would suggest removing the wings from the platform as you build more storage on top of the platform it will become almost impossible if not impossible to remove it with the wings on the platform
So I thought about this, but the rear storage shelf is going to be built over the 4 bolts holding down the platform, so the storage system will have to come out separate anyway.
Do you think the plywood will bow in the middle witH all tHe anticipated weight or did you place support
Brad, I have been kicking around ideas to do something similar but I want access to that storage, it's were the tow straps and tree savers live. I'm thinking full extension draw glides might be the ticket. I'm waiting with anticipation to see how the final system all comes together.
I keep a few items in my under jeep storage access area currently, but with all the new storage I'm going to gain, I'm okay losing. I think there are a few options that might allow you to still access it, but with my future design we just couldn't make it work.
Great video once again Brad! Do you still have a good opinion of the drawer fridges? I don’t think I have seen you mention them since this video
I have a question. I am getting ready to do a 2" Mopar lift and 33"x12.50R17 tires. I know you have used some that turned out to be bad. What tire brand should I roll with for a good all around tire for daily use and off road? Getting a roof rack and a tent for it as well. I dig your setup. It will work perfect for my JK needs. Gonna be a great summer in Michigan for me I think. Also, what size back spacing should I choose on the wheels so that I won't need spacers?
Almost a year later do you like it still? I could see it being frustrating if you don't have much in it and stuff shifting around too much. I don't need a lot of storage but looking to replacing my cooler with frozen pop bottles in it. Normally just have drinks and good for 1-2 days. I love the idea of building this into my cargo system.
another GREAT video. Were looking to update to Dometic. Are you still going to put amazon link up? Thanks
When we move south from Washington we want to come wheeling with y’all
Guys if you can check out Bug’s channel. She needs the support!
Did you have the width and length measurements without the rounded edges? Looking at doing this myself.
I wish I could add a photo comment to show my tool box I made for my Jeep. But this looks like a good start.
Photo comments would be cool. You can share over on the TrailRecon facebook group or on instagram messenger.
I have a 2 door, back seat removed, and want to do something like this platform, but I use my lower storage space... I guess it would have to just end before that?
What year is your Jeep and is it a 2 or 4 door. I have a 2009 2 door and the wooden floor doesn't exactly lay flat.
Nice review. That price is high for shelf fridge BUT the saved space is gonna be awesome
Yeah, I expected maybe 300 bucks for the fridge.
Unfortunately there really aren't any quality budget friendly fridges out there.
lloydrage i think it’s kinda crazy that you can get a full size fridge/freezer for a house for like 4 to 5 hundred bucks but the car fridges are like 1,000
@@ClaytonSensiba I think I got a 7 cubic foot freezer for $175 a couple years ago. I'm guessing it comes down to manufacturing volume though. Millions of house fridge/freezers made vs a few automotive models... Even so, they seem overpriced. But like Brad said, not many options. If ya need one, ya need one.
Is the fridge narrow enough to fit 2 of them side by side? This would give plenty of fridge space and a flat platform on top for other stuff. We need space for a dog and a flat platform is a must in the back but we want a fridge as well.
Amazing proyect, love this channel
Right on, thank you!
When you go to inclose that fridge compressor try putting a small 12 volt fan and plumbing it it the taillight housing (as its hollow right there and you can cut a hole with a hole saw and run a flexible hose and put some kind of fitting to attach it all) to push out the hot air from the cabin of the jeep and then a small vent with a filter to keep the dust and dirt off the coils to make it last the longest it can. Just a thought
That's a great suggestion. There is a small fan built into the rear of the compressor, but airflow will be something to keep an eye on for sure. Thanks!
Yeah was thinking of that and a way to.get the warm air out of the jeep so it wont heat up the cabin. Idk how much heat those fridges put off but once enclosed it will put some off. And the jeeps ac can only cool off so much lol.
Did something similar, cept had it on some 2x4 'rails' down kinda mid each side, this way I can slide a fold out table in the middle :)
I think that's a great option and something I considered. But I have a small folding table that stores in a bag and is easily thrown under the rear seat.
@@TrailRecon Nice nice, looking forward to the finished product :)
How’s is your fridge? Planning to get it.
Thanks Brad!
Does it come with a cover for the back of the fridge?
Did you do the subwoofer replacement panel as well?
