  • Back at to Bataan! No wait the Cabin for a solo run for Memorial Day 2020 weekend.
As like last year I made this a salute to the US Armed Services while I was there with food, movies, tobacco selection, beverages, and a tribute with some pictures of active Service Members and Retired.
First afternoon was getting the, I guess you can call it the kitchen counter expanded and cleaned up. Brought up a new Camp Chef Mt. Rainer combo camp stove, with a burner on one side and a griddle on the other. Got that put in place before a little surprise dinner for a MRE. Brought three of them up for my dinner meals. The first was BBQ shredded beef. Pretty good tasting if I say so myself
Movie time with the new Midway movie , thought it was a pretty good movie that focused on some particular characters, unlike the 1976 version that was more of a docudrama.
Saturday it rained off and on all day long, but was able to get a spot ready for a new propane tank. We are getting rid of the 20lb tanks and having a larger one installed that will be refilled by WOC Energy. This entailed removing an old stump and moving about 10 or so wheelbarrows full of stone to level out a spot next to the cabin.
Time for MRE of pasta in a taco sauce, another pretty good tasting dinner, complete with the water activated heat pack to warm it up.
After dinner it was time for another movie, this time 1917 was on tap. Very interesting and engaging, done in pretty much one single motion shot.
Sunday was spent staining the generator shed with a nice cinnamon color stain. Turned out better than I thought it wood, really looks good there.
After dinner it was time to sit by the fire pit and do a little reflecting of some important people that have passed on.
Most of all a Thank You to our brave man and woman of the US Armed Services. And praying for those that gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our great Nation.

Thank you Mick, I know Veterans Day is in October, and this may be a little more fitting for that. But as you said I did want to take the time to salute them, and let them know that people are thinking about them.

Very good and relaxing video, with a terrific ending. I was in RVN during the 68 Tet Offensive, U.S. Army 1st. Sig. Bde.,we had WW11 C-Rations, with the stamp of "packed in 1943-44", on the bottom. Yes there was four or five Lucky Strikes, being a non smoker at that time I traded those for more toilet paper. In the box they gave us 4-6 squares of toilet paper and on occasion, we needed more than that. Like you, I'm retired from Verizon but the GTE side. Thanks again for a great video.

    • @whiterook85
      @whiterook85  4 роки тому

Thank you for your service there, the Tet must have been a disturbing time to say the least. You're the second person to mention the C-rations, must have been a leap of faith to open a 20+ year old can up. Met a lot of good people from GTE from Texas and California.

I found this channel while looking for hunting camp videos. I'm a sportsman from Wisconsin that likes everything outdoors. I love all or your past videos, especially deer camp videos. It reminds me of my deer camp in northern Wisconsin. To me, the greatest time of year is when we all gather in deer camp and pick up right where we left off the year before. I enjoy hunting too, but the days of "intense fellowship" (that's how we describe camp life to our wives) are the best! We have lost members of deer camp through the years, but those guys live on each year when we are together and the stories start. Occasionally, those stories end up with tears, some from laughter and some from missing them.
As said by a previous subscriber, I also have never commented on a UA-cam video before, but the sincere respect and moving tributes in this video have inspired me to do so. What an awesome idea for the Military theme through the trip that pays tribute the armed forces! Thank you for the reminders of what generations before us went through and all current service members do, to make this country great. I love your videos and keep up the great work!

Thanks for the very kind words Martin. Have a few people that I've emailed with from Wisconsin, seems like we share a common bond. Will see what happens this year with all the things going on, but hopefully we will again find ourselves in the woods in the Fall enjoying the outdoors and good friends.
Have done the Memorial Day Salute a few times now and really enjoy them. The upmost respect to all those that have Served, are Serving now, or have given the ultimate sacrifice for our great County.
Take care and good luck this year.

As always a great video, but I was chopping onions at the end :)
My father served in the Navy and was injured (blown down by jet blast) during the first jet scramble at Gulf of Tonkin off "Tico", USS Ticonderoga. The next day he was flown to the "Big Dick" USS Bon Homme Richard just in time for the second jet scramble and all the nonsense that went on out there.
History class was "disrupted" when the Vietnam War was being discussed when I disputed what really happened thanks to Dad's service. Turns out my teacher was there at the same time.
All gave some, some gave all. Thank you to ALL our service people!

Raw emotions. I can always tell how much seniors friendship meant to you whenever you talk about him, combined with sitting in that chair with the two empty beside you...wow! I'm so old the Army was still issuing C Rats when I first entered service in 1980 (hell, on one training deployment to Camp Shelby, Mississippi in '81 we were issued late World War II-Korean War vintage K Rats with seriously dried out Lucky Strike cigs included). Due to our frequent, and often "extended training deployments" we ate a LOT of C Rats....There was so much iron in the damn things I'm pretty sure we could have set off metal detectors in civilian airports due to the contents of our digestive tracts....And yeah....WE tended to stay "locked up" for days....

Great video, thank you for the tribute to veterans of all conflicts. I am a Vietnam veteran and can relate to Sr’s homecoming experience. Thankfully that has changed for the current returning veterans. By the way, MRE’s weren’t used in Vietnam that I am aware of, all we ever had were C-rats and they came with the cigarettes.

In Hamilton Ontario they have the Lancaster Bomber . One of 2 that are still flying today . I love watching that plane flying over the city . It is very loud . You would not believe the reaction of the people when it flies over the stadium for a game . It also has a few escort planes that fly with it . Can't imagine how a thousand planes like this flying over at one time would look and sound like going for a bombing run . My dad who was a forced labourer during the war said they hide in large culverts when these planes flew over .

Rook, thanks so much for the videos. This is my new go to video for Memorial Day. I used to go to the Gary Sinise, Joe Mantegna celebration on the Washington mall with the Marine Corps band. Unfortunately, that show has degraded into the Grammy Awards with little patriotism. Not a lot of veterans producing that show.
Can't wait until the next video. As a note, my father volunteered for the Navy in WWII when he was 17 and needed his parents signature. He was in a destroyer group in the north atlantic. My uncle was with Patton in north africa and ended up in the arden forest in the battle of the bulge. They all came home. The greatest generation. Thanks.

Had an Uncle that was in the Battle of the Bulge, I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to talk to him about his experiences there.
We do have to give credit to the all volunteer force of today that has spent a long time in the Middle East.
