I think the thing most people miss (even though they constantly drill it into your head over and over) is that Elizabeth and Sue are the same person. The same consciousness is transferred between the two, they are NOT two separate entities.
When Elizabeth is wearing Sue's body, she gets caught up in the excitement of reclaiming what she feels like she's lost, and that's why she keeps pushing it further even to the detriment of her old body. Think of it like when someone is a heavy drinker. They will feel great while drinking and make decisions that they know will hurt them when they sober up, but they just don't care and keep going because it feels good.
The ONLY time they are separated is at the end when Elizabeth tries to transfer into the dying Sue body. Then it's like the same consciousness split into two bodies, with each wanting to live since each one is "Elizabeth" in a sense.
damn this really cleared it up for me. looking at it from a lens of substance (no pun intended) abuse really helps drive that point home
They don’t share a consciousness. They have two separate brains. The way they complain about the other to the supplier on the phone makes that very obvious. They’re very clearly NOT one. The only thing that makes them “one” is that the behaviors one does, affects the other.
Oh yeah because the guy says “You are One”
@@Hey_Jamie it is the same consciousness just using 2 bodies. the fact they both complain is to show in both states she refuses to take responsibilty for what shes doing, and the guy on the phone states, there no she, these are the results of her choices in both scenarios where she chooses to keep going back to a desired state despite knowing shes not disaplined enough to prevent doing things at her own expense, otherwise theres no point in her switching to sue if shes not personaly getting that satisfaction from living the life in sue.
She’s addicted to being sue
You're the only other person Ive seen react to this and acknowledge that she puts an X in all the days she's not Sue. Like those days aren't even worth anything. Sue is the only important thing. Cool stuff. Im glad someone else noticed!
I’ve seen it twice and never noticed that detail before!
I didn’t even think of it that hard tbh,but yeah, doesn’t even bother to put Liz or Me etc
this also makes it clear for me that Elisabeth and Sue are the same. She obviously really liked the Sue week, thats why she can't wait to get back.
Dude, I loved this movie so much. There are so many fun little metaphors embedded, like the fact that the building where she gets the substance looks old and banged up outside but it’s fresh and clean inside as a metaphor for the Sue-Elisabeth connection. It’s just so freaking good.
Also, the door not opening all the way meant she had to lower herself to get what she wanted, illustrating that she's willing to debase (aka "lower") herself and her own value to get what she wanted.
I liked when she said why would you put it in you when it might not work - how many people inject unknown substances in their system or pump their bodies full of crap good metaphor
She literally had to lower herself to access it
Also the yellow coat is representing matrix. Elizabeth wears is all the time and Sue in the beginning is wearing it to (she also wear the same colours as Elizabeth). But after some time she starts to distance herself from matrix and starts to wear more colours. (Hope it make sense, English isn’t my native language)
The actress that plays Sue is Margaret Qualley, the Margaret that Lana talks about in her song Margaret
And she's one of Andie MacDowell's daughters.
The scene where she prepares to go on her date broke me to pieces, I have dysmorphia, and it's amazing how well done that scene is, it hurts so much to watch it..
I will say The Substance was an experience and it's one that I loved. It delivered a new take on body horror while also delivering with the gore too.
at the end when She's saying "it's mee!" i cried with her 😔
Me too!! I feel so sad and depressed in this scene and most people only find it weird and disgusting :/
same. at the end of the day, she was human and she was caught in the thrill of being young again, so much she pushed herself to the breaking point. and when it reached, I felt more sympathy than disgust
Same here. I would have been nice to Elizasue ):
@@yspinkblue7787in the theater I was in, everybody was laughing. It made me so angry😔
@@foodiethebeautyYT right!! I don’t understand how people cannot sympathize just bc it’s “weird”
Whole entire concept of THE SUBSTANCE is that it provides you on what you need and not what you want. Exactly why by not following the rules you suffer the consequences later.
an interesting note is that Sue is not a human but a creature - a beautiful and perfect monster (as written in the screenplay describing her) and honestly it just makes sense. the substance created a creature inside elisabeth using her cells and whatnot, and whoever made the substance advertised IT as "a younger, better version of yourself".
“Is this gonna be about aging?” Oh honey, you got a big storm comin’.
Honestly I was laughing when she said that 😂😂😂
they are one, Elisabeth just hates herself so much that as Sue she completely seperates herself from Elisabeth
the fact that everything happens in the bathroom, being the place where you expose yourself the most and hiding the bodies there as if it were something shameful, is an incredible metaphor.
Try not to copy and paste this on a substance reaction challenge: level impossible
@@HorrorLoverI've read it a dozen times by now 😂
Omg not you AGAIN, this person is in literally every reaction to this movie and always comments the same exact thing. I'd say let's report their comments cause this is beyond annoying
I know it feels so good to come up with a wonderful quote. But not again and again.
Also, is most commonly the room in which shit happens. 😅
Watching you watch stuff ive already watched is the best part of this, it’s like watching a friend react to stuff while I just sit on the side like “mmmmm yeaaaaaa right?!?!” The whole time 👏🏾✨
Exactly why I enjoy watching people react to films!
Lmao same like ya messed up huh yeah😂😂
@@withcharmtospare exactly that! 😂 like we in this together now welcome to the club
"i need to see what happens, as much as it might scar me for life"
the look on my face. OH GIRL!
I interpreted the dreams as vague memories of what The Other Self has been doing with their time. I think they share the same consciousness, but they don’t necessarily remember their actions. The best I can understand it is intoxication vs. sobriety.
yeah when i saw the TV interview scenes it reminded me of getting blacked out , doing things you’d regret but don’t remember, then being confronted with evidence and struggling to handle it
I went to watch this movie in theaters with little to no knowledge. It caused me so much physical discomfort to the point that I couldn’t sleep for 3 days.
Wait what?! Idk if horror movies are a good idea for you, that sounds terrible 😮💨
Sorry, but this made me laugh
I was gonna watch this review because I never heard of this movie but now I’m gonna wait to watch it myself
@Wraiven22 I’m usually good with horror movies but I didn’t know it was going to be as disturbing. That’s why it had a bigger impact on me.
And it wasn’t because it was scary it just had a big shock value on me.
32:38 As soon as Elizabeth dies, the part of the consciousness that was in her rejoined into Sue and is one whole consciousness again. That’s why she freaks out; She realizes what she’s done to herself
I don’t think I’ve ever actually wanted to watch a sponsored segment in a video but the way you did the editing for that hooked me in really well
Yes me too. I usually skip over them but not this one😊
aw thank you so much, this means a lot to me!
something i haven’t seen anyone talk about (which maybe because it’s obvious and i’m just stupid) but elisabeth’s coat is literally yolk yellow! idk why but i thought it was a pretty cool aspect!
True, but I also noticed there were a lot of yellow in this film: the yolk, the coat, the logo of the substance...
Definitely worth mentioning, and it also, and I am not sure if this part is intentional, but given a lot of drug abuse subtext, the writer, director and creator of this movie, Coralie Fargeat is of the age, where they are definitely conscious and aware of a lot of drug PSA's that use to run, back in the day. Which often uses eggs in a frying pan, as what happens to your brain when on drugs.
So to me, I almost think its intentional, that our opening shot is of an egg yolk splitting into two, and later we start to see them frying as Elizabeth and Sue start to fall victim to their situation, as well as Elizabeth and Sue using the Yellow Yolk Coat so much. As in, they are your brain on drugs, and the drugs are youth and beauty, and they are abusing it (getting fried). Also makes sense with Coralie Fargeat's style and ideas around imagery and symbols.
Poor Fred was probably the only good guy in this movie but god bless him he had NEGATIVE RIZZ 😅🤣
This was without a doubt the most unhinged movie i've seen in a good while, and while the story seemed pretty straightforward, as you also said, the ending kinda flipped the switch on us with the scene when everyone welcomes her like "we love you we love you" in her monster form, acting like they're still seeing Sue, or even the original Elisabeth, shifted it to a more metaphorical message.
As a guy watching, for me it wasn't just about women having to appear pretty, but having to fake your personality to fit social constructs, this is something everyone can relate to, not just women.
The public, or even worse, the media persona takes energy away from the original personality, it takes more and more and the real you gets more tired and tired to fit this picture of you for the outside world, clear analog of the clone stealing more and more stabilizer fluid from the original body.
The third act for me was a metaphor for a full mental breakdown, the public persona "kills" the core personality but without it starts to fall apart, having to rebuilt itself the best way it can, but the result is just a bad patchwork of what it used to be, the public realizes the "farce" the loved person not really being as cool or hot as it appeared to be and promptly, gets rid of it.
The part when she screams "it's still me" was so 🦆ing sad ... because they don't care about YOU, they care about the image you show, and if you can't do that anymore because you're tired of pretending, your a$$ is grass.
And that's the real message and the real horror of this movie for me
The thing I really appreciate about this movie is how they depict substance abuse, pun intended. You think you’re helping yourself with the drug, but you’re actually hurting yourself instead.
In the beginning when the egg splits into two, it sharing the other eggs egg whites symbolizes the consciousness that they share. Not sure if anyone else thought that too but that was my interpretation. I love all of the details and cinematography in this movie, it’s been on my mind since it came out. Such a great movie! 👏✨
@sierrathebarbie
I'm not really sure it symbolizes a shared "consciousness" if consciousness means being aware of what the other self is doing, since Elizabeth and Sue have no clue about what "the other one" is doing in her week.
On the other hand, if consciousness means "way to behave", big yes, they share it and share the taste for autodestruction and auto-sabotage. Sue is narcissistic and selfish because Elizabeth was like that when she was young... that's why she has no friends, for example.
She doesn't take care of Elisabeth and viceversa.
Which is ironic since "take care of yourself" is her/their signature line!
I like the symbolism in little details. Like how the studio exec was specifically eating prawns, mirroring how Hollywood is only interested in women for their bodies and then leaves behind hollow husks when they're done with them.
And the producer's name is "Harvey".
@@silentgnome whats the reference here?
Oh yes ma’am this movie was such an experience in theaters and I absolutely loved it. The commentary on women beauty standards in Hollywood was executed so well. The practical effects were amazing and the concept is so interesting I loved it. Demi Moore was just amazing and that mirror scene was so powerful.
Cait, your reaction to this movie is how everyone in my sold out theater reacted. Hundreds of people losing it. Best theater experience ever.
Experiencing the last 30 minutes of this movie in a packed theater was one of the best movie going moments I’ve ever had.
damn I wish I had done that......just hollywood is so garbo these days I havent been to the theater in forever...but that would have been gold
Original.
Watched this in a PACKED theater and even though I went alone, the crowd energy was ABSOLUTELY insane, an experience that felt once in a lifetime for multiple reasons!
35:32 that score is actually from Hitchcock’s Vertigo, which is so fitting with the themes
The way you screamed at 34:29 has me HOWLING, so real.
Same 😂😂😂
No lie, I’m sure that when Sue dissed Elizabeth in the talk show, that, that scene was inspired by the time Katy Perry was asked if she listened to Mariah Carey and Katy Perry answered almost the same way Sue answered. Basically dissed Mariah as old and gone to the past. It’s eerie how accurate this film is in regard to younger generations dissing the old ones and always wanting the newer young ones.

The last 30 minutes in the cinema were the best fun I've ever had, people's reactions to the finale and their conversations after leaving (one girl told her boyfriend that he had chosen the last movie they were watching) was my highlight this year. By the way - the actress who plays Sue is named Margaret Qualley and she is Jack Antonoff's wife.
I knew this would have you GAGGED, hahaha! It's an insane ride for sure 🤣 but man, I am soooo obsessed with the cinematograhpy, so many of the shots are stunning!
35:32 it's so funny you say that, makes me think of Sue calling Elisabeth's program Jurassic fitness (like Jurassic Park lol)
Fun fact: Margaret Qualley that plays Sue is married to Jack Antanoff and that’s who Margaret by Lana Del Rey is about
This was an excellent film, from the screenplay and directing, cinematography, visual effects and above all, bravura performances from Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. Keeping my fingers crossed that it gets some Oscar nods, because it's one of the best films of 2024.
with this movie in the theater I cried, I screamed, I laughed, I felt every possible feeling and I left the theater wanting to see the movie again.
I highly recommend her first film, Revenge. Tis slightly more conventional but still ...
When I tell you I screamed when I saw this on my home page😭😭 None of my favorite reactors have done this yet, except you and Chuu
Same! She's doing what others won't and I'm here for it
my favourite movie this year personally
That was the cutest sponsor segment ever. I watched the entire thing and I normally always skip them
ah thank u thank u thank u!!!
my sister and i went to see it in a mystery screening at the cinema and once it finished, literally everyone there stayed in their seats for five minutes in silence. the film is incredible and we could not stop thinking about it for weeks after
The sound Design, the cinematography, the makeup… all Oscar worthy
But you know its gonna get jack shit since the oscars hate horror for some reason
Hopefully it will be an exception to their hatred of the genre
Razzie worthy
@@sufixx_17I know. But this film absolutely deserves the accolades for everyone involved.
@@sufixx_17 Silence of the Lambs was the last horror suspense thriller that won best picture. 👌
When you said you didn’t know anything about it I thought PERFECT because this truly is a great one to go in totally blind, it makes the shock factor so much better
Yesss, this movie is disturbingly perfect for you to watch! Love this! You scream at Monster EliaSue has me crying laughing!
hell yeahhhh bombas sponsorship get it girl
omg PLEASE watch SMILE 2 NEXT... its so much better than the first one!! the substance and smile 2 are like my favorite horror movies of 2024 you wont be disappointed!
Omg yess
I saw this movie alone in the cinema at 10 AM. Wild experience. It’s such a great film. Really just smacks you straight in the gut, it is not subtle.
It’s really so devastating that Elisabeth/Sue just fall right back into the cycle. It was so hard to watch Elisabeth refuse to engage with the world. You can imagine a story where Elisabeth/Sue uses her time, her experience in the industry to get behind the scenes, take over and make real changes in the industry. But her sense of self is just decimated. Dennis Quaid’s character has a line at the beginning about Elisabeth having an Oscar! But when she’s in the Sue body all she tries to get back is the fitness show? Coralie Fargeat really made a visceral movie.
I discovered you about 2 weeks ago, and I think I've watched your entire channel already, you're helping me to improve my English and you're so fun actually! Greetings from Colombia! 🖤
I have been waiting for your reaction to this movie
The literal best movie of 2024. Nothing else
This film was probably the first which gave me a viceral, nauseating reaction. And I loved every second of it
Saw this in the theatre and went in blind. Didn’t finish my snacks, as you can guess lol
This would’ve been a fun experience to watch in theaters but I forgot about it lol however I got to watch last month and loved it! The body horror, cinematography, sound design, makeup and practical effects and the acting! I cried a couple times because of just how well the executed ageism and beauty’s standards towards in the industry is upsetting and infuriating. Also, tackling self hatred towards oneself and resentment that Sue and Elisabeth had towards each other. That’s why they kept being reminded that there is no she and you, you are one but they saw each other as different which then leads to them sabotaging each other. Some have mixed feelings about the ending but personally I didn’t mind I loved it no matter how crazy and over the top it was😂
I'm so happy that you got your first sponsor!! Get that bag girl! (Love the transition)
omg caitlin that sponsor segment is GENIUS but it also genuinely scared me at first bc i thought someone was actually in your room 💀
ahhh omg thank you! tryin' my best with my first sponsor 😅
@@shesscared Yeah, it was effective to do it in a horror movie reaction! Oh, also, Margaret Qualley, who plays Sue, is the subject of Lana's song "Margaret" on _Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd_ and she's Jack Antonoff's wife.
@@shesscared, I want you to react to Terrifier 3 in the next video.
@@shesscared lol I had to come back to the comments to highfive you for your sponsor segment, that was fun. You did great. Grats on the first sponsor!
HAHAHAHAH this is soooo true 😭
Now THAT put the HORROR in horror movie! I went through every feeling you can get while watching it.
Yeees the sponsorship is one of the few I actually watched through! 👀
I had seen this similar storyline in midnight mass. But this movie is just... yep. 😂
Girl this movie was dis-GUSTING
The metaphors are so real/raw tho
But AM-AZ-ING
Yeah, great, wasnt it?
I saw this movie in theaters and I loved it. Not only it has great bold messages but it's the first time, in I don't even remember how long, that a movie surprises me and leaves me with my mouth open
Fck - I’m the type of fiend who laughs in glee at Terrifier but your sudden switch to the Sponsor Caitlin made my heart leap ! Great reaction and Great Editing ! 😂
If anything the body horror element is about our relationship with our bodies and not our bodies as the horror, which I feel like should be all body horror or just body movies in general
Sooo excited to watch! Remember smile 2 is officially out 👀👀👀
I saw this film in the theater on a day before closing at my job. I contemplated calling out afterwards to reset and get a palate cleanse.
The horrified screeching every time something happened took me out 🤣 This probably wouldn't have been a movie I'd have watched on my own even though I really appreciate what an objectively good film it is, but man, you made it 10x more entertaining. Thank you for always delivering A+ content!
on every other watch, it gets better and better, and if you read the symbolism between the lines, the movie is oscar worthy, it's so tragically sad and well done, and the audience reactions are exactly what the movie is about (people laughing and hating because it's "too much" or other things), it's not even a body horror, or a horror for me even, it's art. one of the best movies of the century I fear
12:37 with Lorde right above your arm is so funny
I didn't noticed at first jshshs😂
Our class voted between The Substance and another movie that I forgot the name of (I think it was a romance movie) to play in class. We were told The Substance was horror so most of us voted for it. We didn't expect it was body horror. Suffice to say, we went home more traumatized instead of having fun.
What type of class do you have? 😭
The sponsor totally caught me off guard! So clever
i feel like they are always the same person she just resents her younger version and she feels envy as if it was a stranger when it's her but a version of her she can no longer reach out to or feel connected to
Oh my god, this was the last film I thought you would react to, the world is beautiful after all!
I love this movie soooo much, glad you're watching it ❤❤
First of all, congrats on getting a sponsorship!
Regarding your question about whether or not Sue and Elizabeth remember what the other one did when they were active. Yes, it was all the same person, the same mind, and yes, they (she) remembered everything.
When she wakes up, she acts surprised that her younger self took too much, because in the moment, a person may not care at all about what will happen to them tomorrow and what the consequences for their life in the future may be, especially if at the moment they're high and want more (and you can say that Sue was high on being young and beautiful again).
Hence all sorts of things like drinking, knowing full well that you'll be dying of a hangover tomorrow, or something like that. We've all experienced that, haven't we?
"Hell, I drank too much yesterday, now I feel like shit and my whole body hurts, why was I so stupid and couldn't stop, I hate myself! I'm quitting drinking for good!"
And the next week you're out partying and drinking like there's no tomorrow again, and whatever happens is my future self's problem.
In the moment, now, at the time of getting high, a person's head is not really working the way it should and they don't care, it's fun right now, and whatever happens tomorrow is the problem of the other "me" in the future.
And when that "tomorrow" comes, you sit in agony and curse your "yesterday" self.
The problem is that there is no "yesterday" or "tomorrow" you. You are one, the voice on the phone keeps repeating, but Elizabeth doesn't listen.
Your "today" self often keeps ruining the life of your "tomorrow" self while hating on your "yesterday" self at the same time. That's what happens when you don't love yourself, when you don't respect yourself, when you don't take care of yourself.
But she's also living two different lives in two different bodies, so there's also a big deal of dissociation going on at the end, when she feels like a different person in different bodies, and her dissociation and hatred towards herself allowed for her to become physically split into two bodies at the same time.
Anyway, yes, she remembers everything, but she deeply hates herself and dissociates from herself, so in the end there's no hope for her.
"Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?"
Me before the movie: Yes.
Me after the movie: No... Yes...?
I don't know anymore.
27:47
I'm a gay married man but having Qualley shriek at me to control myself has me feeling distinctly not gay.
That was definitely super hot
As a professional gooner, it makes me feel some type of way ngl.
Figures you're gay. For a straight man that's a sign to gtfo
imo top 5 iconic moments in the film. hard to give it the #1 over the MONSTRO ELISASUE titlecard or the Dennis Quaid shrimp massacre or the Pump it Up porn shoot
When the blanket went up over your headphones 😂 me too girly
Squirming is the right word to describe this movie. Never felt this unsettled watching a horror movie in years
I had a conversation with a friend, who hadn't seen it, about this movie the other day (I gave NO spoilers).
I said "There's life before seeing 'The Substance', and life AFTER seeing 'The Substance'.
It's one of those rare movies that can change the way a person sees the world...and themselves.
Great reaction!
To answer your question: One consciousness + 2 egos/brains/bodies + self hatred = recipe for disaster
I KNEW YOU WERE GONNA WATCH THIS MOVIE CUZ I SAW YOUR STORY ON INSTAGRAM!!!
I love every time you say "you know". Makes me smile.
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you're reacting to this movie, I was really looking forward to seeing your reaction.
Thank you so much for bluring alot of that out and covering the screen with your bubble, you are a hero!
This had so much symbolism about it , y’all just love y’all selves because at the end of the day … the day gotta end cuz this is not the way 😂😂 I am horrified and traumatized is so many ways
So happy to see Caitlin secure the bag
after watching this movie i immediately went to the gym and bought skin and anti-aging products afterwards
this movie is truly a trip, an experience that I absolutely adored I've never felt queasy from any body horror before this movie. Demi Moore did an amazing job in this role, lost a lot of sleep after watching this the first time lol

I remember talking about bare feet in horror movies a while back on patreon, no truer words!
This whole episode is wet sounds, blurred mush, and Caitlin losing her mind😂
Seeing 32:47 “what if something absolutely wild happens” and then later 37:37 is hilarious 😂
I’m a fan of how Caitlin used the substance and ended up getting an exact copy of herself that now does the sponsor bits.
This movie far exceeded my expectations in many ways! Two thumbs up here.
Also, nicely done first ad segment, Caitlin! Fun, creative and cool choice of sponsor as well!
Would love to be a fly on the wall for the crime scene investigation at the apartment. 2 bodies, probably same DNA, one body young, one old, not to mention the gaping tear in one body like something crawled out.😄😄😄
