Omg I always wondered why humidity and misting was so important, it shouldve been obvious but thank you for pointing out they can only absorb water through the leaves!!

this video was awesome i learned so much, i planted a blueberry tree for a lark in my back yard but im thinking of starting a small orchard at my moms house in northern ontario.
Make sure you get northern highbush plants. They come in after freeze problems.

That is a very nice orchard you have there! I am going to expand mine and will be cloning as you have. Could you elaborate a little on the aftercare through the winter? Are you allowing the greenhouse to get cold and give the new plants a dormancy period or keeping them alive and growing all winter?
Do you do the cuttings at the end of summer or beginning of fall? Can you do the cuttings during winter time as well?
cuttings are best at the start of summer . 20 degrees celcius is the magic temp and continuous misting. use the cheap mister from china 15c each fixed onto half inch popypipe
Thanks for sharing this great video. I still need to prune (lightly) some blueberries here. If I use those cuttings will they root or am I too late? You grow them in your greenhouse I see, not outside?
I have taken about 100 cuttings off my plants last week. I put em all in one pan to root out, but I don't know if I should separate them out before winter or next spring. U have any recommendations thanks
Michael Lowe put them about 1 inch by 1 inch apart for roots to form.
My husband was using his bobcat to remove some stuff from my garden, and he accidently nicked off a large branch from one side of my blueberry bush. I put it in water in a bucket in shade, but don't know if it will root--or if the main bush will die. Any thoughts?
I don't know how your blueberry bush has fared by this time (as it will either be dead or alive), but depending on the overall health, it should have made it. A little while back, a local farmer dug up a blueberry bush that my one neighbor, who had moved out, had left behind, and not reclaimed, and since it was in a bad spot for the snow plow, it needed to be removed anyways. Thing is, he accidentally broke off the canes of this red currant bush that grew next to it.
Funny thing, a few weeks later, I saw that it was starting to come back, so I dug it up, and planted it in my yard - annoyingly enough, it's the same variety as my other red currants, but that's beside the point. I will see what it looks like in the spring.
As for the branch, depending upon it's health, among other things, there is a good chance it could become another individual plant, but patience is the big thing.
I hv 300 Oneal bushes 6 years old.... They are struggling to produce new foliage growth... Im near Greensboro nc... Could I ask you a few questions... Whats the best way to speak to you?

Hello, Thanks for watching. I believe you are referring to the powder in the green jar that I am dipping the cuttings into. That is a rooting hormone. We use Root Tone. This will help the cuttings form roots.

I was amazed of your multiplication of blueberry because in my country they say that blueberries can be multiplied only in vitro. So, thank you and good luck in your work ! I've never had luck with green cuttings. But then I don't have misting etc or a need for so many. I typically just use layering.
how long before the cutting root, and how long before they need transplanting?
3 months in australia with above 20 deg centigrade temp. probably the same in usa
What is the best month to take cuttings from blueberries to root them out.

You mentioned that the dirt you use is 100% pine bark. For a novice gardener, would regular potting soil work just as well? What alternatives would be okay to use?

ncfruitgrower Hello, as long as your pH is between 4.5 and 5.5 you should be ok. Make sure the roots can drain. :-)

What kind of interval settings do you put on your misting system?
cheap 15 mins interval timers work just as well the magic part is..it must be 20 deg centigrade or higher and the misters 15cents from china aliexpress.com on half inch polypipe

Okay, so I have to ask.
You show that you use rooting hormone on your blueberries. Now, I have to assume these blueberries are for consumption.
As far as I'm concerned, most if not all rooting hormones in the U.S. , come with a label warning, stating not to use on plants that you plan to use for consumption.

Not a problem, sorry for the confusion, lol, Jason Sharpless was replying to me I believe, because I was asking about the rooting hormone.
Only reason I even asked is because I have black berries in my back yard, now there's two varieties, one has thorns, the other does not. I can clone the one without thorns using the rooting hormone.
Only thing is, I've read on most of the rooting hormone I've ever used, on the bottle it always says 'Not to be used with fruiting plants', so I have just avoided using it for such.
I plan on trying to use willow water, or something along those lines.

There are hormones that state not to be used for fruit to be consumed. The hormone we use has been confirmed by the manufacturer that it can be used for fruit plants that will be consumed.
Tim Kelley The manufacturer explained to me that it is not a health issue, it is a compatibility issue. The hormone is not intended to root fruit tree's. Blueberries are bushes and per the manufacture ( Garden Safe), it is OK to use their hormone Take Root for Blueberries.

The hormone encourages root growth. The warning is intended for immediate consumption. These are YEARS from food stock. Eg might be rooting a head of lettuce.. grow it a bit in a hydro system then eat it a month later. That scenario the hormone could be an issue. Using the products to root out cuttings of trees that produce fruit is another situation. Nobody eats blueberry bushes you see?

Thanks for making the video, very informative. But now I'm wondering why anyone would actually do this other than for selling new plants to other people (ie only makes sense if you weren't planning to plant them). I can buy new 3 year old beautiful potted plants with great roots for $5 to $7. Sure the cuttings are free, but you end up basically wasting 3 years. During those 3 years wasted, the purchased plants will more than pay for themselves in the value of the blueberries they produce. So not only do you end up wasting 3 years, you end up losing money too.

Thanks for watching our video. You are right. Plants can be purchased for $3.00 to $5.00 wholesale each. Keep in mind that when I need plants, I put between 500 to 1500 hundred in the ground per planting. That's $1,500 to $5,000 for plants per planting. We root for our orchard expansion and dead plant replacement and to help others afford to get plants that are between 19-24 months old at an affordable price. Some people want to keep the variety they like and want to clone their bushes. Some people just want to root plants because they like growing different plants. I can honestly say I have never waisted time rooting plants. Even if you loose 50% of your cuttings, you still learned something and had fun doing it. NC State University sent out a progress report on Blueberry production and cost effectiveness. They advised that it takes 7 years for a blueberry plant to produce enough berries to make up for the cost of the plant, the time needed to plant, cost of picking, cost for pruning and fertilizers, sulfur, and chemicals needed for pest control. We have the most amazing blueberry plant that is over 20 years old and we want more of those, not pot luck from the nursery. Thanks, ncfruitgrower! So, how long does it take after you put them in the pine bark?! Is that five months over the "winter?" Need light, I assume? We have winter here and the leaves go away, so I guess we need to keep them warm where there is light?
