Toyota HiLux 2021 review: Rogue family test - see the ultimate tradie ute as a family car

  • The Toyota HiLux has been Australia’s best-selling vehicle for five years straight. Over that period, there have been about 200,000 of these utes sold.
But they aren’t always being sold to tradies or adventurers. A lot of these dual cab utes are being bought as dual-purpose vehicles for family duties as well as work purposes. There are tax incentives, and they also hit hard on the desirability scale.
So does the Toyota HiLux 2021 model make sense as a family vehicle? Our family reviewer Kate Edwards recently spent a week in the HiLux Rogue double-cab pickup to see how it stands up as a family ute.
In this review, Kate discusses what it’s like to use a pick-up truck like this for a family of four, and whether the lined cargo area (which has an electronic roll top hard cover) is a practical boot alternative for mums and dads.

I’ve got one. Roller cover literally blew up (motor smoking and burnt out) after 6 weeks. Covered by warranty but a serious pain!! Everything else about the Ute is excellent.

I’ve had problems with the roller cover as well, been back 4 times to get it fixed and it stopped working again for 2 days last week, a real pain in the ass!!
Other than that I like everything else about the Ute, had 3 hilux’s before this one, always been great utes.

    Madam
Cup holder in front air con vent is meant for keeping beverages not the hot coffee. In scorching summer the placement keeps liquid cool. It is also available in Innova and Fortuner.

I have this bad boy, excellent pickup truck! I use it for mall crawling and weekend warrior work - camping and beach driving.
If I was wanting to mall crawl only, I would not buy this pickup truck.

$69,000 !!, it's no wonder the Chinese brands are climbing up the sales charts, offering comparable utes for thousands less. It used to be the top seller, Ford Ranger stole that mantle a while ago.

Great review. I think the humble ute has gone away from its roots of being a tradie vehicle due to the carpeted tub. One thing all Toyota reviews seem to miss is servicing is every 6 months/10,000km for the Hilux which is just a blatant money rort expecially for a commercial vehicle, when compared to its competition.

Be extremely wary of being ripped off buying a used Hilux..(and many other used cars). There are so many people trying to sell them for nearly the price of a new one, the same or in some cases more than the cost of a new one! I cannot get my head around the level of arrogance of people charging those kind of prices for something that’s a few years old with thousands of k’s on it. That tells you a lot about the sellers.. I mean WTF is wrong with these people?!...

  • @351tgv

buy the Fortuner instead if you plan on using this type of vehicle for the family/adventure weekend, the Hilux version makes no sense in this segment.
