I recorded this back in high school too. Loved it instantly. This WAS Dave Grohls 1st big appearance after Cobain died. I always thought he was still in mourning the way his hat is covering his face. Great Vid. I wish they played more songs.
Greg Dulli is one of my favorite artists of the last 20 years. He is both epic and extreme. The way he tossed that cigarette. He is effortlessly badass.
Money was originally released as Money (That's What I Want) by Barrett Strong in 1959. Long Tall Sally was originally recorded by Little Richard, and also released, in 1956.
i remember seeing this...wondering when we would see dave next after kurt died..and loving how much this kicked ass. the beatles really are a solution for anything that ails you
Pirner has been a drinker in the past, but that's just the way he performs without a guitar. He's always in motion! That's why he still drives the women crazy.
@theselector ...the producer of the soundtrack (Don Was) was also the producer of a few Ringo albums...he asked Ringos advice.....& this is the outcome.....I know Ringo wasn't in The Beatles at the time that the film is set...but he was in Rory Storm & The Hurricanes who where in Hamburg at the same time...it's not meant to sound like the polished performers we all know....it's meant to sound like a band learning their trade, who where on speed each night...
@wakaw07 - Like many other posters are saying in this thread - you need to listen to the Beatles Hamburg tapes to hear the punk sound. Punk means many things to many people. So IMHO the Beatles had a thrashy, rough, high speed sound on the Hamburg tapes (and these were from 1962 when the band was starting to mellow). Listen to their cover of Chuck Berry's Talkin Bout You and you'll get what I'm saying. To say the Beatles were extremely "boy band/pop" is a stretch.
@Thatsniperonthehill3 I know. I follow the sun as well. I just didn't bother as it wasn't relevant to the point I was making. Maybe I should say that they didn't play any original songs at the time, but hey saw her standing there.
@theselector .....yup...this band recorded the soundtrack....some people like it because of its roughness...some people dislike it because of the same reason.....I don't know why the t.v producer is showing post Hamburg shots of The Beatles.....maybe he's talking down to his audience....maybe he was thinking that if he put up a photo of John, Paul, George, Stu & Pete...the audience wouldn't get the connection.....I'm only guessing....
from imdb : 1990s punk-rock musicians and techniques were used to create the film's soundtrack, instead of the precise styles of the period, to better convey the way the music felt to the early Beatles audiences; "it was the punk of its day". I was going to try and say something similar, but that's just much more concise.
@e8412561 Wait a minute.....R u saying that this band played the music for the Backbeat movie? ie...recorded the soundtrack? That's hard to believe. Also if they were paying tribute to the Hamburg days why do they have The Beatles post Hamburg on the video screen just b4 the band starts?
I liked the guy who sang "Money" and all the "John" songs, even though he didn't sound anything like him, but the guy who sang "Long Tall Sally" and all the "Paul" songs doesn't even do those Little Richard "wooo"s. I'd have picked someone else.
oh they weren't mellowing then, it was still their speed rock punk phase, just like on all the early bbc sessions the bass is high in the mix, they just kicked the place.
@yukiohanafender There was always shitty music on. not sure if you remember nsync, cristina aguilera etc. Even in the beatles time there was shitty music. everyone is always bitching about how crappy music is nowadays. turn off mtv, there's plenty of good music now.
This sux , too many rhythm guitars just thrashing......this sounds more Ramones than Beatles.....besides these aren't original Beatles songs anyway. The presenter should've said that this was a tribute to Classic American Rock n Roll & Soul rather than The Beatles.

man, when long tall sally came on i jumped off my desk and staged dived onto the floor, thanks backbeat band.
Money was originally released as Money (That's What I Want) by Barrett Strong in 1959.

the beatles really are a solution for anything that ails you
Dave on drums....fuck yeah !!!
Searching for this video for the past few hours. Fuck yeah, found it!!!! :)
The part with Greg and Thurston on the floor at the end was awesome! Supergroups can't get much cooler than this.
Thank you!! It's a great document. I don't like too much the performance but it's really interesting watch it
ok this is brilliant!
greg dulli
That was great.Especially seeing Dave Pirner in his older band.Zebrina
One of the bast fucking bands in the 90s
The gusys rock and kick asses...
All that talent on one stage - the MTV audience is probably thinking, "wtf?"
Pirner has been a drinker in the past, but that's just the way he performs without a guitar. He's always in motion! That's why he still drives the women crazy.
WOW. AMAZING!!!
great band
Wait a second.... Is that Thurston Moore playing a Rickenbacker?!! Now I've seen it all.
Pirner and Grohl rules.
Soul Asylum and Nirvana, rules.
Those MTV poseurs at the audience doesn't even know how to react to this rock n' roll classic..
whoa, first sight of dulli and all i saw was joaquin phoenix
Please upload the entire show of the 1994 MTV Movie Awards that this is from. I have been looking for it for quite sometime. Thank you.
Dave Grohl !
dulli is so fucking beautiful
@theselector ...the producer of the soundtrack (Don Was) was also the producer of a few Ringo albums...he asked Ringos advice.....& this is the outcome.....I know Ringo wasn't in The Beatles at the time that the film is set...but he was in Rory Storm & The Hurricanes who where in Hamburg at the same time...it's not meant to sound like the polished performers we all know....it's meant to sound like a band learning their trade, who where on speed each night...
Damn bro
Dulli woot
MUY VACANES ESAS PRESENTACIONES
now THAT is called rocking the fuck out.
It's cool! The singer looks like he could play John in a tribute band if he wanted to. Similar nose and eyes.
just two months after cobain. crazy

Does anybody have the performance of Helter Skelter and the end of the show?

back before MTV would "cast" people to act enthusiastic in front of the stage
@nycuk Had?!!?!? He sounds as good now as he ever has! Hell, better, as he isn't always screamin' out the lyrics.
@SPOOKSTR I hope you know that Dave Grohl played the drums in Nirvana.
@theselector you're right, there was some other doofus i was trying to respond to, sorry about that.
Thurston Moore has the authority to play whatsoever he chooses.
Thanks anyway.
@alramone1 You obviously didn't read my post properly.
@beedawk ...same here...lol.
@theselector If they put up Hamburg-era Beatle shots on the screen, no one would have known what the fuck they were, duh.
I liked the guy who sang "Money" and all the "John" songs, even though he didn't sound anything like him, but the guy who sang "Long Tall Sally" and all the "Paul" songs doesn't even do those Little Richard "wooo"s. I'd have picked someone else.
i think i just came in my pants
which ceremony is this? movie awards 94? vma 94?
Whats it to you if I sound drunk? U got a problem with that?
Pirner sounds and looks drunk but other than that its pretty cool. A collaboration of super bands formed for the movie..
So much talent here and the audience is lifeless - a PRIME example that MTV is akk about the current trend, fad or sensation - SAD
oh they weren't mellowing then, it was still their speed rock punk phase, just like on all the early bbc sessions the bass is high in the mix, they just kicked the place.
good o' times...now we have jonas brothers and lady gaga...shame
nossa, mas tava podres de cherados hein! puta q pariu!
Learn to rock
tributes are shit, this is kinda gooood maaaan
u sound drunk
too bad they switched lead vocals for long tall sally. soul asylum sucks, especially that guy, whatever his name was.

'Money' was good but 'Long Tall Sally' sucked.
