  • **This was filmed prior to Hurricane Helene which reshaped the waterways of the southeast, in time we hope to bring you an updated video reflecting the most up to date information**
The Pigeon River Gorge aka The Dirty Bird is one of the most popular rivers to kayak in the Great Smoky Mountains. With regular release flows typically during the months of May-August this class II-III+ run is good for the beginner paddler to practice skills. But it still has plenty of play spots for the intermediate paddler learning to stern squirt or other tricks.
    Put in:
    Waterville Rd, Hartford, TN
    35.775533, -83.100698
    Take out:
    Hartford Rd, Hartford, TN
    35.812866, -83.144437
Gauge: Pigeon Power Plant, Waterville, Nc
The following "guide" is intended to be used only as a reference for the river, providing paddlers with an idea of what to expect. It should not take the place of proper training, scouting, safety & an honest assessment of ones skills. There are often multiple lines on each rapid. Proper scouting & paddler skill should determine the desired line. Each boater assumes all risk when paddling on a river.

Love this. I paddled the pigeon a month ago for the first time. Had a good group to explain most of this to me, but this kind of video is a great resource for those who might be looking to step up to the dirty bird.

For a bouncier take on double reactionary, hit the curlers at the top of each hole, it makes for a fun ride

The Dirty Bird actually was too toxic to run in the '80's, but as I was driving west on I-40 in 2002, I was surprised to see rafting outfitters. The Canton, NC paper mill cleaned up its act! I was looking for something easier than the Middle Ocoee to start my sons on, and the Lower Pigeon (Class II) fit the bill. The next year they were ready for this video's section, and then the Ocoee.

Yes! Its been a comeback story for the Pigeon River, and the hope is things get cleaned up even more over time! I will let Ira know to see if he can get a guide vid done on the Lower Pigeon soon! Thanks for watching! - Jer

So for some context, Powerhouse (IMO) is not 3+, if Pattons Run on Nanty is 2+ so is this, if Grumpy's on the Ocoee is 3+, Powerhouse is definitely not. Also years ago Lost Guide WAS 3+, not anymore, I'd say solid standard 3- no plus.

Hey! We actually pull our ratings directly from the American Whitewater page, in an effort to try and make the subjective rapid classification system as objective as possible. I don't (and you don't either) necessarily agree with every AW rating, and there is nothing wrong with that, but that is what we as a team have decided to do with our river guides!
      Anyways, thanks for watching! :)

Maybe it’s just me but I’m kinda surprised Vegomatic only gets ll+. Depending on the line the water can be kinda chaotic. Had a kinda shitty swim there over the weekend after flipping then bouncing off 5 or 6 rocks.

    • @JerKayaks
      @JerKayaks  Рік тому

Oh no! Glad your okay! We pull our ratings straight off of American Whitewater in an effort to make them as objective and official as possible, and to be honest I def don’t always agree with those ratings.
      Anyways, thanks for watching!

@@JerKayaks Oh yeah no worries. I figured that’s where the ratings had come from. I’m just a bit surprised that’s what they give it.

It's a II+ because you can easily slide left and avoid the feature
