Learning Vertical Whitewater Kayaking - Pucon Kayak Retreat Advanced Week
Ira - What a way to conclude my whitewater kayaking time in Chile with Pucon Kayak Retreat! I knew the final few days would be the most challenging for me. But it would also allow me to put everything I learned this week into practice. The Advanced Kayak Week was a wonderful experience that I am so glad I didn’t pass on. From the moment I first hopped on the river to the last days I was able to see progress & learn techniques I could bring back with me to the States. Big thank you to Pucon Kayak Retreat for this opportunity!

I’m a Registered Guide in Maine and I tell my people that horizontal is what matters when swimming in whitewater. Aggressive self rescue; nobody loves you more than you! If you can’t make your way back to a boat quickly, then get in the Defensive Swimming position and keep your nose and toes up. I think you were fine swimming to the eddy. Preventing an entrapment is the main goal.

I have had this exact day on the green many times. Lap after lap of saying todays the day and just feeling "off" or the pad not looking "perfect".. In reality my lines never went bad and I don't even know what perfect is for the pad... Its definitely important to not takes things so seriously and remember to just have fun. Took me so much to get into my boat when i finally ran gorilla. Once I got in I have never been so locked in on anything in my life. Pure bliss. Self assessment will yield long careers

I have 2 thoughts about this. (None are critical of you at all btw) Some of the best lines I've had on big rapids are those days where I'm feeling like the boat is paddling me. Your body knows what to do. Trust in your lizard brain...it knows what to do. 2ndly as I have gotten older (I'm 49) I have realised I dont care how bad I'm looking each day. The people that boat with me know im good in the rapids and they will razz me mercilessly when I'm looking like a beater...and that's good cos it stops me from being too critical and makes me laugh at myself over those mishaps.

I dont want to be an armchair critic so lets start with this. Dont beat yourself up over small failures. EVERYONE is between swims. Silly mistakes resulting in swims are the ones that go 1 of 2 ways. Either you laugh at yourself and say sh#t happens or it really effects you mentally. Stay in the fight and keep trying. The only things I can see you are doing "wrong" is you are rushing your roll so your technique is falling apart. Slow it down. Once you are underwater and set up for that roll take a beat count to 3 then do a solid roll. If you rush it 9 times out of 10 you will have to try that roll again. Also...(and I know this is hard but)...always have a 2nd attempt at that roll. Learn from every mistake. Learn from every swim. And keep pushing yourself. I have watched your other videos and I see vast improvement in you Ashley. Every beginner I have ever taught has gone through these battles so you arent alone. Keep at it. I have faith in you.

Another strap trick alternative I learned recently is to daisy chain both straps together. Put both straps parallel to each other and start daisy chaining. This way they will always be in pairs the way we use them. No searching for two 15 foot straps individually. Just another option. I still roll mine for space reasons. Love the hot dog one btw. Nasty water though, LOL!
