WHAT I LOVE ABOUT YOUR APPARTMENT IS YOU HAVE A WINDOW ABOVE YOUR SINK! I REALLY LIKE THIS APARTMENT! ON AMAZON THEY HAVE AWESOME FLOOR CHAIRS THAT ARE LIKE A COMFY CAR SEAT OR GAMER CHAIR!!! GOOD LUCK ON WHATEVER JOURNEY YOU ARE ON NOW ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
It's so cute and you've done a great job making it look nice! I just got my acceptance email from the JET program yesterday, so thank you for making these videos!
278 US Dollars. That’s cheap as hell. I pay 700 US dollars for a 1bedroom apartment In America. Which is like a little more than 900 Canadian dollars. I wish my rent was 200.
I noticed you have a nose peircing. Does the Jet Program let people have peircings now? I'm just wondering cause I have 3 in each ear and I heard that only 1 peircing per ear was allowed.
I've never heard of a JET getting a free apartment. The apartments are provided in the sense we don't have to look for an apartment (at least in most cases. I have friends who looked for their own apartment with assistance from their school since they have a new placement and there was no ALT before them). A lot of the time, the apartment is in a Teachers' Housing building meaning the rent is subsidized to an INCREDIBLY low amount unlike mine which was provided but is in a private building that isn't subsidized by my BOE. But yea. Never heard of a JET not paying any rent.
Meggie Kay Since reading your reply I looked around and found a Reddit post with JETs talking about rent. It seems the range is all over. Some get free rent (for a crap apartment) one said s/he pays ¥10,000 a month, some others paid more with free utilities. I guess it depends where you are and if it's teacher housing. I guess by coincidence I only talked to the ones who got it free. Edit: Oh wow, this guy says he got a really nice apartment for free. jetwit.com/wordpress/library/anecdote-articles/rich-jetpoor-jet/
Some get car subsidies too. For me in Sendai, I ad no financial help. However the BOE or school staff could help with any problems. I am going to do my apartment video soon!
I like apartment tour videos. They are really nice. I have been in my apartment I have 6 months and finally made a video (with mess) but I made it. After I clean it and keep it clean for longer than a week I will make a new one but I'm like how does one person make so much of a mess lol
JET apartments are usually leased by the Board of Ed. In my experience, the key money and deposit had already been taken care of by the BoE as they had an arrangement with the landlord for several apartments in the building, and "generations" of JETs had lived their already.
I wouldn't bother with moving. I don't actually need a bigger apartment since I don't really have a lot of stuff (even though some storage space would be nice). The moving fees on top of having a higher rent for a bigger apartment doesn't make it worth moving to me.
Hi Meg. Thanks for sharing your experience. Just a quick question - $400 is so inexpensive compared to the rent here in Canada even for Montreal standards is the rent subsidized by JET or are you paying the full amount by yourself.
I was a JET in a Tokyo suburb. My rent was subsidized 40% by the Board of Education I worked for. I paid about 6-man yen per month. Each situation is different though. I had friends who lived in inaka (country) and they had townhouses/houses for zero rent AND cars.
I came back from Tokyo a few ago. After graduating with my BA, i will attempt to go through JET to move to Japan. How are you liking Oita? Im prreeeetttyyyy sure I wont be placed in Tokyo lol
Loved this video! I appreciate the effort you made to make a small space homely but honestly speaking it would drive me crazy to be in a small apartment :( does it bother you or do you just get used to it? I live in a big house in the UK and the thought of having the smell of cooking mixing with your bed space area is 😣 thank you for the insight you've given us future JETs though!
I've lived in fairly small bachelor apartments before so it wasn't a huge change for me. I never thought about the food smell. Even when I lived in a big house with my parents, I could always smell when someone was cooking no matter where I was in the house so never considered that weird. But there are a lot of deodorising things at the stores here which might help if it bothers you.
Are you re-contracting for another year? It doesn't seem like you've been very happy with your experience so far on JET. If you're interested in staying in Japan, I've heard that it's pretty easy to find other teaching positions within Japan once you're already in the country. Is that something you're looking into?
What makes you think I'm not happy here? I'm pretty content here right now. I am recontracting so I'm not looking for anything else. I made a video earlier talking about recontracting and why I've decided to stay. ua-cam.com/video/OJQsHANHo-M/v-deo.html
Oh, I must have missed that video! Sorry for asking something you've already covered. Some of the things that you've said in your videos since arriving in Japan have sounded like you were a bit disappointed and discontent with your situation there. I definitely get that no situation is ever perfect, and it's very likely that I just read too much into what you were saying, so I'm glad to hear that you're actually having a good enough time to stay.
I want to go too Japan but I think the JET plan will not be anymore cause I heard you make less money and you're not respect as a teacher so I want to teach in Korea.
The JET salary is pretty good. From what I've read, it's the same if not slightly more than the equivalent position in Korea. But there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing what kind of teaching job you want so to each their own. Personally, I haven't had any issues in terms of respect or not being able to live comfortably/save/travel in Japan. But good luck with whatever you decide to do. 😊
My pred left me so much junk. I think it dates back to his pred too. Need to get rid of it ASAP. Did enjoy the tour. Your place looks nice and cozy. Although I would be annoyed with the fact that the burners are really close to your bed.
Yea. I found magazines from 2011 when I know my pred was only here for 3 years. While the burners may look close to the bed, it's basically as far from the bed as possible. It doesn't bother me. What annoys me more is that half the aircon blows into my clothes and not the room where I would be but the measurements don't line up to move things around. Haha.
Loving the tour! I moved too! I posted an empty apartment tour video :) Check it out and let me know what you think? Spoiler alert: My place is not as pretty as yours :P

This place is really cute! I've just got my placement for JET and I'm going to be in Oita Prefecture.
YAY! WELCOME TO OITA!!! I guess we'll meet in a month or so when you arrive here. 😄
It's so cute and you've done a great job making it look nice! I just got my acceptance email from the JET program yesterday, so thank you for making these videos!
Mayllie I know this is late but congrats and I hope you are having/will have a great time in japan

Even tho u have no closets, it still looks peaceful & cozy.
Funny to hear you pay rent. THE JETs I've talked to before said the appart was provided for them.
I've never heard of a JET getting a free apartment. The apartments are provided in the sense we don't have to look for an apartment (at least in most cases. The little frog on the toilet 😂 cute!
That was put on by the girl before me and couldn't figure out how to remove it easily. But it's cute enough to just leave on. 🐸
Where do you dry your washed cloths?
I like apartment tour videos. They are really nice. I have been in my apartment I have 6 months and finally made a video (with mess) but I made it. After I clean it and keep it clean for longer than a week I will make a new one but I'm like how does one person make so much of a mess lol
Wow you have a lot of stuff. Thank you for the apartment tour.
Can you change your apartment with the jet apartment ?
Thanks for sharing! I just wanna ask if you had to pay deposit and key money?
JET apartments are usually leased by the Board of Ed. In my experience, the key money and deposit had already been taken care of by the BoE as they had an arrangement with the landlord for several apartments in the building, and "generations" of JETs had lived their already.
Hey Meggie Kay. Would you ever make a vid of you at work teaching?
No. It's not really ok to film at the schools. Plus, that's not the kind of direction I would want to move my channel.
Meggie Kay That's fair
OMG! l love the place! much better than my first place i got for myself.
Yea. It's not my dream apartment but it is a nice one. I've lived in worse places before. Hahah.
aha! yeah i understand! lol
nice place ....its good see you bring ur Cananda flag with you.....so how many countries you lived in?
Japan is the 5th (not including Canada).
wow that impressive ..Which country you like the best? I've visit many counties my self like Japan and Germany and Canada
hey you ever thought about going into the peace crop?
I'm liking Japan so far and I loved living in Singapore.
No. The Peace Corps is American and you have to be a U.S. citizen so I couldn't even if I wanted to.
It's so cute and cosy! I'm so jealous! :(
Have you looked online to see if there are apartments in the area that are larger?
I wouldn't bother with moving. I don't actually need a bigger apartment since I don't really have a lot of stuff (even though some storage space would be nice). The moving fees on top of having a higher rent for a bigger apartment doesn't make it worth moving to me.

Their rent is subsidized. I believe, if they move to another apartment then they have to pay the full rent.

You've got a sub out of me. Great video. Looking to take advantage of the JET program in a couple years once I finish my degree.
Hey hope you don’t mind my asking but what part of Canada are you from ??
Ps watching from Edmonton Alberta
How much did this cost? Rent and initial cost for a month
Hi! Is housing free for JET ALTs? Thanks!
No. I've never heard of a JET who has free housing. Some get subsidised housing so it's a little cheaper but it's all luck of the draw.
4:08 Can I please have those books 🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇
Hey, just curious, where in Japan are you based? I ask cause I'm moving to Japan in August and would like to know what to expect with my apartment.
I'm in Oita Prefecture.
I came back from Tokyo a few ago. After graduating with my BA, i will attempt to go through JET to move to Japan. How are you liking Oita?
Im prreeeetttyyyy sure I wont be placed in Tokyo lol
If you're getting rid of the Japanese. study books and can send them back to Toronto if u ever ship something back here I'll gladly take them :p lol

That sounds amazing ! I would love to visit Japan. Oh, and happy Valentine's Day to you ❤
What is the JET program ???
Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. It's the Japanese government's program to get native level English speakers to help teach in schools.
Meggie Kay thanks for the info. Nice apartment BTW.
Please donate the books!
i love how u have alot of Canadian Stuff :)

Hello fellow JET!

Your apartment is not well arranged in an orderly way.
I want to go too Japan but I think the JET plan will not be anymore cause I heard you make less money and you're not respect as a teacher so I want to teach in Korea.

Definitely meant for the Japanese lifestyle: minimalism!
How much do you have to pay for the apartment ?
