This movie is based on true events. It's a historical epic. The princes of Bundelkhand Mastani(Deepika padukone) was a Muslim(the outfit is based on Persian looks as the mother of mastani was a Persian) and fall in love with Peshwa of Maratha Bajirao I(Ranveer singh) empire ( it's a Marathi look for the man sitting over there). India is Rich in culture, you will find diversity of culture in every state of India.

I watched this movie on IMAX in Dubai and I can not even begin to describe how insanely mesmerized the entire audience was during this song.. nobody made a single sound.. we all were so spell bounded by Deepika's beauty.. by the stunning set.. by the gorgeous costumes.. by the music.. by the dancing.. gosh I remember the goosebumps I had after this song ended

True love story happened in 1700-1740 AD between a Maratha ruler "Bajirao" and a beautiful woman "Mastani" from of a Muslim community.The outfit of the Bajirao and the song represents the Maratha culture of Maharastra,India. Mastani outfits were such designed that the Islamic culture is palpable and to have an imprint of Maharashtra culture.
For anyone wondering.. the set for this song was actually inspired by the sheesh mahal in Lahore (Pakistan) which was made out of mirrors.. that is the reason everything in the setting looks gold, it’s because everyone is wearing gold/ whitish colours which is being reflected by the mirrors.
That moustache style is Indian Maratha style. The Warrior clan from Maharashtra and southern India, one of the most prominent warrior tribes in India.

I know a lot about Bajirao And Mastani, Mastani's father was King of Bundelkhand his name was Chhatrasal Bundela he was house arrested by a Mughal general Md bangash , chhatrasal asked Bajirao for help,Bajirao was Prime Minister of Maratha empire , Bajirao responded quickly with cavlary of 45,000 men he defeated Bungash and freed Chhatrasaal, Chhatrasal was 80 years old at that time,he made Bajirao as his Son in law by arranging his marriage with Mastani, he gave Bajirao 1/3 of his empire, and gifted him diamond mines, chhatrasal had many wife out of which Mastani's mother was a Muslim, so she was a half Muslim, Bajirao got married to Mastani as he cannot refuse friendly proposal by the king, Bajirao got married with mastani, he already had a wife,so mastani was his second wife, Bajirao's Mother Radha bai, Brother Chimaji and Son Nana hated Mastani because she was a Muslim and Bajirao was known to kill the Muslim invaders, however Bajirao's first wife, Sisters and all generals and even the King supported Bajirao, Bajirao was very successful so many people from the Royal court hated him, they just hated bajirao, they just kept bickering about Bajirao's Muslim wife, some even called her mistress, and even when I study the official document of that era, nobody mentioned her name as if saying her name is a crime, everybody in Bajirao's palace feared even mentioning her name.

In this song, the woman in the balcony is Bajirao's (Ranveer) first wife Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra) and he's smitten by Mastani (Deepika), who goes on to become his second wife. You may have picked up on the awkward dynamic. To complicate stuff, Mastani is muslim, Bajirao & Kashibai are hindus. Bajirao ruled western India, state of Maharashtra. Known as the Marathas.
