I’ve owned a newer model Ryobi for about a year. Kept having to deal with the shutoff problems. Loved the fact, I only had to push a button instead of pulling the cord. Last year, I tightened the screws to fix the button by the wheels and it seemed to help (from another video). This year she was shutting off much more frequently then last year. Followed the video fixing the two switches in the handle. Bam - All fixed -Mowed the whole yard without a shutoff! The two switches in the handle were stupid looking cheap! $10 at Lowes for a toggle and on/off push button and I have a brand new mower! As you take the handle apart, I recommend taking pictures so you can put the self propelled (if you have this feature) handles back together (it’s not complicated at all). Had my son hold them in while I snapped everything back together. I removed the on/off safety bar as recommended! Thank you for you awesome video and saving me around $400 for a new mower!

100% if you get any condensation or water into that trigger switch - the inside is corroded. You don't need to go this in depth - try just upgrading the switch in the handle to see if that fixes your problem first. Worked for me. Thanks for this vid.

Thank you for the video. Into my eigth mowing season and the dreaded shutoff problem shifted from annoying to unbearable. Knowing time and wear changes dimensions and tolerances, and being reluctant to buy the necessary torx tools to access the switch between the handle and mower body, I Scotch taped a penny size flat washer over the red button so that when the handle is in place it pushes the button a little bit further into the switch. Voila! no more unintended shutoff. Don't know how long this hack will last but I've got more washers and Scotch tape.

Thanks SO MUCH for this video!! The last 4 times using it, it progressively kept get worse and worse each time using it. The one side of my lawn has a steep slope downwards that is only about 2ft high and lasts about 4ft long. This is a new lawn/ new dirt so over the past 3 years the slope has become less steep as it leveled itself over time. So you would figure the tilt sensor kill switch would be less likely to kick in. But no. The past 4 mows I had to be even more careful how high I could tilt the mower when turning back to do the next pass before it cut off. I just knew it had something to do with the tilt cut off feature mentioned in the manual. It would be nice that Ryobi built these switches to last longer and/or to make it easy for users to replace them and to have something written about replacing them in the manual so people don't just junk the otherwise good mower. I think most people don't even know about these kill switches. If they did I am sure it would have prevented people from throwing them away. I just finished mowing and got online to see how to fix this and though I have not tried it yet, I feel even more confident that my mower will be back to perfect order again! Thanks so much in advance!!

Gently use screwdvr to pull out plastic pipe piece betw 2 pipes then pull out plastic jam that holds mdl microsw in upper hdl then use a small wire conn to tie yel wires together, toss microsw and plastic jam or keep yel wires plus microsw wound on hdl horiz pipe along w all the crap removed fm ry401011.

She told me to get rid of the broken 20 inch one today,,,,, I watched several video’s on this today and yours was the most helpful.
I took out switch near the right wheel and one at the right mid push bars. The switches for starting and shut off turned out to be fine. I was so ecstatic that it worked I went ahead and mowed the back yard.

Three safety switches? That's why America can't get anything done! I'm surprised they didn't put safety switches on the safety switches. It took me 30 minutes to mow a 40ft x 4ft patch of grass in my alley today because the stupid mower would shut off every time a thought triggered a neuron in my brain. I was about to get my wife's eyebrow tweezers to speed up the process. Thanks for the workaround. I just ordered the switches from your Amazon links. As soon as they come in, I'm bypassing the safety switches. Hey Ryobi! If we cared about safety, we wouldn't play around with electric tools connected to sharp blades! All we want is to cut our grass! Give us tools that WORK!

Seems all their lawn mowers have the same problems, my current one and old one had problem of turn it on and it runs perfectly. But push foward and suddenly it stop working. Found out have to tighten some screws/bolts on it to secure safety switch. Had hoped ryobi would solved all these problems by now. Great job on your illustration; however you forgot the switch in the middle of the handle bar. If the (hidden) switch on the middle handlebar clip pops open then lawnmower will shut off. Plus, you can only check if the first bypass (lower handle bar) worked, if your lawn mower starts to bigin with. if it doesn't start, you can change them one at a time and try turning them on. I recommend using waterproof switches if you don't keep you mower in the garage or if it is raining or water exposure is a con cern. Overall a great demo.

I hear you my friend. Fortunately or unfortunately, (depends on how you look at it), they have not changed the safety switch (It's required to have them) and i get that, the simple fix for #RYOBI is to make the switches out of metal NOT plastic. Since I have changed mine, it's been working perfectly and it's been well over a year now. Again, not telling anyone they should do this, since i have to say that, and I DO NOT ALLOW a child or even a young teen to operate the mower if you do make these changes. I am the ONLY one who handles the mower. They make sure great products and now have serval mower versions out (not sure that is) BUT STILL don't make the safety switches out of metal, I'm shocked that they are allowed to make a safety switch out of plastic, THAT... doesn't seem safe! LOL

    • @nickbrutanna9973
      @nickbrutanna9973 3 роки тому

Well, it probably needs a severe angle sensor -- that is, a mercury switch -- to cut it off and stop it operating if it's @ more than a 30 degree angle or something "unlikely in normal operation" (i.e., if it gets tipped over on its side**), but yes, I'd think that is the only main safety switch needed.
      ------
** I assert this because, suppose it was "on" but not running for some reason -- i.e., the motor was not spinning the blade. Perhaps it's got something caught. It's silent, not clearly "on" (yes, you *know* this, but still... when you're focused on a problem, you can miss even the fucking-duh obvious)
You tilt it over on its side to see if something needs clearing, reach in to do it, and stop thinking about that motor restarting suddenly. boom, there goes your fingers, a hand, or even a foot in the worst case, since it can start automatically. YES, you should have sense to turn it off before doing that, but... not the way humans operate all too often. A REASONABLE tilt switch that only cared if an operational blade was really, seriously exposed would be a Good Idea. Another notion would be if something causes the blade to stop, it needs to be pushed to re-start the motor... but that adds to the complexity of the design, is my guess, and thus increases liability. BOTH would not be a "bad" idea, but at least one of them.
You CAN say, "Well that's protecting people against their own stupidity", but doing so is not a bad idea, UNLESS it severely impacts function, as this crap does. I argue a 30 degree tilt switch would do the job just fine without being problematic.

I just took a regular drill bit and drilled a hole in the plastic, slightly smaller than the switch and then wedge the switch into the plastic and it held perfectly. If you make the hole a little bit too big just use some gorilla glue around the edges and give it a minute and it'll seal right to the plastic, always start out with a small drill bit and work your way up until the switch can wedge into the hole nice and tight.

      It works !!!!!!!
Turns out it was the switch at the wheel. I hit a problem where there was so little wire coming out AND the spade terminal was crimped on so hard that it stripped the wire out.
No way to even get strippers on it so I took off the right rear wheel, the entire handle assembly and the left side black bracket.
Then I removed the rear four T20 bolts holding the top of the mower to the bottom. One was stripped when they built it, but I was able to get it out with caveman power and a sad flathead screwdriver.
Then I was able to pull the wires around the front of where the handle bolts to the frame and I had several inches of wire to work with.

I (like most) didn't know this was going to happen a few years after I purchased it, so I did what needed to be done to not spend another $400. As of this year, Ryobi is looking into changing these pieces out for metal (instead of plastic) parts because of videos like these and complaints, so it's working. I have dozens of Ryobi power tools, lawn tools and even their Pet Stick vacuum and have had very few (if any) issues with any of them, so overall I'm extremely happy with their products, and NO I'm not sponsored by Ryobi, nor have they ever gifted me anything.
