The New Testament authors threw in the "donkey" incident (Matthew 21) specifically to make it look like Jesus was fulfilling a prophecy -- and they even admitted (Matthew 21:4) that this display was expressly meant to fulfill a prophecy (from Zechariah 9:9). But not only did they ignore all the _important_ parts of the prophecy, they also claimed that Jesus simultaneously rode on TWO donkeys (Matthew 21:7). How did I ever fall for this clumsy BS when I was a Christian?😆
Beat me to it. Christians conveniently overlook the fact that the authors of the New Testament had more than passing familiarity with the Old Testament
It's even better than that, because it shows Matthew was specifically farming prophecies from the Septuagint. All four gospels have the story of Jesus riding the donkey. John even attempts to cite Zechariah. But they all get the reference correct: Jesus was riding a single colt. But Matthew made sure to look it up when he copied it from Mark, saw the Septuagint's mangled translation that adds the word "and," and copied that directly into Matthew 21:5. (Though the ESV and a few other versions "fix" Matthew 21:5 to match Zechariah 9:9). The best part is, there's no way for apologists to wiggle out of it. I've seen them try to square it by saying that Zechariah somehow did mean a mother donkey and its colt, so Matthew wasn't wrong. But if Matthew wasn't wrong, that means Mark, Luke and John, who all explicitly specified that there was one animal, the colt, were wrong. So which is it? Was Matthew wrong, or were the other gospels wrong? They can't have it both ways, no matter how hard they try.
@ the “donkey” messianic prophecy is that the victorious king of Israel would come riding in on a donkey’s colt. He would dismantle the weapons of Ephraim and Jerusalem, and bring peace to his nation, which runs from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the Earth. There’s a war going on in Israel right now, so the prophecy is not fulfilled. All Jesus did was ride a donkey’s colt (or in Matthew, a donkey AND a colt) from Bethel in the land of Ephraim to Jerusalem. He was not a victorious king, and he did not bring peace to the world, let alone Israel.
*”In a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off. When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.”* (Hosea 11:1) This is a prophecy about Jesus - Yahweh the King of Israel its redeemer, the Son of God formed from the womb by God the Father (begotten of God) per Isaiah 49:1-7. Jesus will be cut off out of the land of the living as predicted in Daniel 9:24-27, Isaiah 53, Zechariah 13, etc. The dawn symbolizes the beginning of the new covenant era aka the messianic kingdom “within you”. The Bible says the Word of the Lord is here a little and there a little meaning you can’t treat it like a novel or historical narrative. Prophecies, allegories, hyperboles, parables take away context. See if the Deconstructed atheist can refute this.

I love that you do this. In the end even if their book was internally consistent, it'd still be made up. But the fact you can destroy the bible by quoting the bible is just all the sweeter.
This is why I am starting to doubt if Jesus was an historical person. His life seems to be a hotchpotch of events made up to fulfil prophecy (an utter absurdity) or even just to parallel verses in the Old Testament. Take away these made up events and there is not much left. I am kinda wondering if Mark wrote some sort of a mystery cult type play and people got carried away and turned the hero of the play into a real person, just adding bits on over time.
I've heard there was someone proclaiming to be the messiah every few years at this time. There are other messianic cults that were documented by isrealites as being destroyed in that time but they make no mention of jesus. The gospels were supposedly written no earlier than 50 years or something after christs death and not necessarily by any witnesses with claims by 3rd parties being described visions that came to them, as gospel. Were there people at the time named jesus? Likely. Did one of them claim to be the messiah? Possible. Did the teachings of jesus in the bible come from said guy? Unlikely. So no there is no good evidence for jesus' existence and he's likely completely fictional.
Zechariah doesn’t say that an “actual king” would end all war in Israel and Ephraim. It just says king. Màlak, “to reign,” in reference to king in 9:9, is sometimes used of receiving the title of queen or king whether or not one receives any military or political power (Strong’s Concordance, s.v. “màlak” (Strong’s 4427)). And when the nation is hoping for such a king, they very likely are not placing their entire hope in anyone post-coronation. This is clearly the case with Jesus, as he was not literally crowned yet was regarded by some as king. And after Jesus threatened suffering on the scribes and Pharisees, lamented the looming desolation of Jerusalem, and warned his followers to flee the coming war in that city (Matthew 23 and 24), those things did indeed occur. The city and temple were destroyed and Judaism collapsed. Eventually, after the bar Kokhba Revolt, Jews and Judaism were virtually wiped out and eliminated from the region formerly known as Judea. The Jews were eliminated and Israel was dead. So, what, then? Obviously, no more war with Israel. The new Israel, or new Jerusalem whom the writers of that last generation spoke, were essentially just converted pagans by now, and they were not fighting ethnic Israel’s battles. No one was; ethnic Israel was now extinct. To this transformed Israel, peace had come to the people of God, and these Christians would claim victory indefinitely, gradually transforming the world into its more cruciform shape. I’m not sure why the prophecy in Jeremiah about Rachel weeping is in Matthew. It appears to have just been dropped in there. Other passages in the gospels are kind of puzzling, too, but the story remains intact, that from as far back as Moses, some of the prophets foretold the end of their age. They were an idolatrous, warmongering, wicked people, after all. And I’m not sure why you brought up Hosea and Exodus. Were you trying to link the exodus to a prophecy in Matthew?
By the way believers, even if that Jeremiah prophecy referred about coming Messiah in Matt. 2:16 to 18 and it’s true story to y’all, Why would a God who supposed to be LOVE and WISE “KNOWING” and “PREDICTING” by prophecy that under 2 ages little boys will be killed by Herod, didn’t STOP it to occur! Just watched that horrific killing of under 2 innocent ones slaughtered and SAVED ONLY His baby😮
