LEAD TIP GUITAR HOW TO PRACTICE!

  • In todays lesson I will give you some lead guitar tips for better practice. We can play and practice lead guitar by locating the root note of the song key. I will teach some ways to play lead guitar around the root note. Early on, I did not think about using the root note this way. I could have saved years of practice. Because I was playing up and down full scale patterns over and over but it really did not help improve my guitar playing. It’s so important to practice the right things on Guitar. This intermediate guitar lesson will help you connect the dots in so many areas of your lead guitar playing. I know many of us did not practice the guitar very efficiently, but using this root note concept, we can easily create an awesome blues rock lead guitar solo. we will be much more confident as we improvise up and down the fretboard. We should be learning this as a beginner. Then it becomes second nature as we get into intermediate and advanced level Guitar playing.

      How I practice? Simple! I instantly get overwhelmed with all the stuff I need to work on/internalize/experiment with. Then, I do some spider exercises. And end up playing some cover songs.

      @@jasonwojcik Man, does that sound like me a while back. The biggest thing that helped me move forward quickly was learning the fretboard. Everything on the guitar starts to make sense once you do that. And it can be as simple as just learning the root notes of the chords and scales that you use all the time. And build from there. Keep working at it, Jason! And have fun! Catch you later👍

      I start off practice by playing "Kid" by The Pretenders. I read that Johnny Marr does that - he says it uses all the elements you need in a guitar piece to warm up. I'm at the point where I play it without looking at the fretboard. That is something I would love to be able to do - play without looking at the fretboard. I'm not sure if it's helping. :)

    My daily practice consists of 5-10 minutes warm up (usually playing double stops in whatever key), then lead improv (concentrating on fixed interval patterns & runs all over the neck), rhythm exercises, and working on fluid, melodic solo playing (combing chords & lead). Recently I've been getting into 6th and 9th harmonic fills and these are pretty awesome in a Neo-Soul and Ambient context. It's important, imho, to always practice in a musical context and work on technique/dynamics in every single practice session. I have to integrate ear training exercises more consistently at some point. And of course, whatever Rusty's got goin' on. Happy weekend.

And all of your input...I would have to say the biggest difference from your approach is that you take small "deliberate " bites and your calm and patient demeanor is welcoming. Rusty, my breakthrough started happening from another video that taught me how to self-generate my own blues rhythm with riffs. It happened to be in the key of G. I learn EVERYTHING from that key now. And now because of you, all I’m seeing and feeling is G arpeggios, triads, slides and bends. And now I’m hearing these scales and riffs the way you guys tirelessly teach. I could intellectually understand but my ears had to catch up.

    Hi Rusty, great lessons. I practice by learning and playing through a couple of songs, then always play blues to backing tracks, trying to use different key progressions. I struggle to get away from the same repetitive licks though, also struggling to get faster. Although if I think back a year I’m much faster and more accurate, I really do need to take heed of your learn the fretboard message, I know it’s holding me back. I tried to learn string by string but it’s not going in and staying in…Thanks for the fantastic lessons!

    Rusty, this is timely!
    I've been practicing lately with sliding back & forth between (what i think of as) 4-note Pentatonic boxes.
    I'll add bends here & there as well.
    This is a great extension to that practice!
    What else am I practicing?
    Well, I've been working on learning "I know a little" by Skynyrd (Steve Gaines), and a few others. I know most of the licks, I'm practicing picking most of the notes (instead of relying on pull-offs) to improve my speed.
    Thanks, dude! Keep up the excellent videos!

    Connecting to roots.....what a very sensible thing to do!! Generally when I first pick up my guitar, acoustic or electric, I tend to pick a random backing track and see what I can come up with. Mostly I have no particular aim in mind, and sometimes it sounds fantastic, but mostly it doesn't!! Then I start over with chord and scale (and mode) practice, and I end with continuing to learn a song or solo that I'm currently working on. BUT, learning root note position is very important and what you have just shown is a great way to learn and remember where the roots are. I can't remember them by position alone, but remembering them via a musical method is so much easier, not to mention so much more fun!! What a good tutorial Rusty.....Thank You :)

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  6 місяців тому +2

      It sounds like you cover a lot in your practice time. I base all of my playing around the root note. Basically, the root of the chord, the scale, the triad, the arpeggio, etc. if you know where the notes are located, it really helps the fretboard makes sense. I’m really glad you got something from this lesson. Always good to hear from you my friend! I hope you have a great weekend.👍

    I'm just starting out on the ukulele (baritone and tenor) and am really trying to learn the fretboard first. I started by learning the notes of the circle of fifths, then major triads. Now I'm learning the circle of fifths progression. I'm going slowly, there's a lot to learn. I just mapped out the major pentatonics, I'll add minor in a little bit.
    I was pretty depressed that there are no black keys on my fretboard. So I cut up a postit note and did the next best thing. I put strings on my piano. I've been practicing my chord inversions, either on the piano looking at the fretboard, or on my fretboard looking at the piano. You should do a video on this method, it would be a good addition. I've shown it to some professors at our Conservatory, they liked it.

      @rustysguitar1  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey blues man, thanks for checking out the video! The best advice I can give is to play a chord, and then play part of a scale that relates to that chord. Then play the chord again, and play another part of the scale that relates to that chord. You can do that over chord changes also. And you can also start doing it with a groove. Just tapping your foot or a metronome. Whatever it takes to get better connected with the chords and scales. I hope you have a great great weekend with that Guitar, my friend! Talk to you soon.👍
