You always have a lot to contribute Ash. Countless times, just seeing your models has motivated me to pick back up a hobby knife and build or a paint brush. Keep fighting the good fight and stay safe.
As someone who’s starting to venture more into terrain fabrication, I dig this kind of video. Dude, you’re a hobbyist elder god. I would love to see more of your opinions and insight on terrain and table prep. Keep up the awesome content.
I use that 2x Matte Clear on everything and I love it. I have used it in snow and rain and as long as it doesn't get wet, it won't fog up and it ages more matte without yellowing.
One thing to remember about the drybrush step: you don't need to use dedicated mini painting for this. Craft paint works just as well, and is cheaper. You can pick some up at any craft store.
With all my terrain that I build or buy, I always use craft paint for terrain. Its too expensive to try and use mini paints for anything than my minis! EDIT: Actually sometimes i use a small amount of my Vallejo paints for the tiny details
@@KolaKreates I only ever use my dedicated mini paints on terrain for the “centerpiece” of a table, the building/ruin/ or otherwise an eye catcher that people will look at when playing. Even then I don’t paint the majority of it with my mini paints. I use the primer XD
@@shartsmcginty8056 Maybe try a Burnt Sienna paint. That's a common color across many craft paint brands, and seems similar to Mournfang Brown from the looks of it.
I used this technique on my Warcry terrain a couple years ago when that video came out and had a good set of terrain in no time. Thanks for doing another one for the sci-fi stuff. Now you’ll have to reveal your secrets for getting all the minis painted so fast! 🧐😃
Appreciate the "insight" into this process. I know you've previosuly said in the past that the "hobby side" is usually something you like to keep "for yourself".
Cheers Ash that's great. Those will be handy for Necromunda Ash Wastes. A little bit of conversion to add trading post signs for the buildings and give it a bit of a Wild West vibe.
Another primer I like is the red oxide, especially if doing a rusted look terrain, it is super matte. Base prime with flat black, then the red oxide from above, then dry brush with a metallic.
@@ghostwood9174 The Red Oxide is definitely a great base for a Martian look. It would probably work well with a light orange drybrush as well for some lighter highlights.
Nice. Will use this to paint up some of my scratch-built sci-fi terrain. Have some hab buildings, com towers, and a spaceship this method would probably work with really well.
Thanks Ash these videos are always super informative. A few days ago I batch assembled like 18 minis, and I agree with you assembly is becoming my least favorite aspect of this hobby.
I've painted my terrain in the exact same colour scheme haha. Only difference is I added orange parts to pick out key points (doors. Barrels etc) and I almost did the exact same techniques aswell 😅 Gotta say the terrain is really easy to build and is really solid. 👌 will last forever. And super easy to paint. And very easy to add in other kits to expand it. (Pipes. Barricades. Servohaulers. Containers. Crates etc) I made the plasma obliterator the centrepiece of the base.
Not a big spray paint user, but that looked pretty simple and gets very good results, so I'm tempted to try it on my next project. I don't have any unpainted GW terrain but I'll give it a go on the Deadzone terrain that's sat in its box waiting for its time to shine!
I like this style off terrain, is it not the Moonbase Klasuis (Fronteris) plus the new centerpieces? Should look fine togehter. Like the easy DIY, ideal for ... non Adepttus Mchanicus or art class students like me. A few magnets and all this Freonteris stuff should be quite flexible?
Always love seeing your rare painting videos. Do you have any tricks on cleaning off mold lines more efficiently? Feels like I take forever during the cleaning and assembly for a kit of this size.
Was fun to watch Ash ! There are all sorts of companies making different terrain and bits. What do you look for in terrain ? Does it have to be line of sight blocking or does it need some other feature ? I am curious what you think as I look for different pieces to terrain for my games.
I think I’ve been doing GW dry paints wrong 😲 Edit: montage! (Really dig music!) Edit 2: now I kind of want to see some of this terrain interspersed with some ‘old-west’ themed stuff. You know, some real Firefly’s World s***
Love these videos. totally used this technique for my warcry terrain. How does it work for MDF? Specifically I am curious about like TT Combat which has a lot less.... ridges I guess. It just seems flatter. Still like their terrain just wondering if you have has success using the same process for MDF terrain.
Looks great, though I have to say I would always try and avoid using overpriced hobby paints like GW for anything except tiny details on terrain pieces. For drybrushing scenery I just use craft paints or cheaper end hobby paints such as Humbrol. You’ve done a lovely job on those though!
Alternatively for dry brushing just use craft paint from an art store or even dollar store. Its what I do for any terrain projects I have....which are a lot *cries
Yeah. Ash was really showing his privilege when more of the GW paint was dried on his pallette then ever made it on his brush. Must be nice to throw that kinda money away!
@@mitchelldorcas9687 not worrying about a $3 pot of paint is not privilege.....Also Ash has been in the hobby for longer than most other hobby youtubers have been alive..I'm sure he can spare more than a few dried paints.
I literally cannot get matte sprays other than white or black in my country, it's just a local hivemind apparently that spray paint is only used to cake up outdoor fences or something.
I'm using a similar method with Krylon Fusion Fire Red, Dark Metal, and Matt Black for my set. That Fire red though, it's so easily mistaken for mephiston red and it costs like 1/5th the price. Totally solid hobby cheating.

It’s solid. The longer it stays sticky and etches the better it protects and fights humidity. I’m sure that’s an issue for you in the PNW!
On my buy list. Thanks for the insight!
