    She's recognized as one of the best female singers in modern music. She was also an accomplished drummer, playing drums on many of their songs, with her brother, Richard, playing keyboard & singing backup vocals. She passed away from anorexia nervosa in her early 30's. Gone MUCH too soon. Thanks for your reaction.

    They went into the studio to see if Richard’s arrangement of the song would “fit” for them. She read the lyrics off a napkin. Her vocals were so perfect that they used her first take for the lead vocal track on this studio recording… and started calling her “one take Karen.”

    I grew up with the Carpenters' music. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days & Mondays", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.

      I first saw Carpenters as Spectrum at the Whisky-A_GO_GO (early 1967) in LA fell in love with them. Then in a jazz club in Los Angeles (I think it was Shelly's Manne-Hole but do not remember for sure) in 1968 Karen was around 17 or 18). At that time they were a 3-piece band Richard on keyboards Karen on drums and Bill Sissoyev, who played the bass. Karen was a source of amazement there were few professional female drummers her age (few of any age in the 60's) even fewer female jazz drummers. A few female jazz singers, but no female drummers. She had a Ludwig drum kit that was like the set-up of Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello (one of her idols) and had mastered "Take 5" It was composed by Paul Desmond the sax player in Dave Brubeck Quartet in quintuple (5/4) meter to showcase drummer Morello. Again in 1968 on Your All American College Show her singing then did not impress me her drumming did they won. Then in 69 the album OFFERING latter change to TICKET TO RIDE came out. Her voice was devastatingly beautiful unlike anything I had heard before as good as her drumming. That was when I found that there is music which is not California (cool) Jazz all though their music kept some hint of their jazz background.

    • @ChrisC709
      @ChrisC709 Рік тому

      @@zigman8550 Categorizing pop singers or any other genre again is all about opinion on where that type of music fits. Aretha can be any genre she wants to be which includes pop music. There are a lot of R&B soul singers who have sung pop music. That's why I can't categorize genres. If you are a great singer, you can sing any genre and be great in it. And no matter who I say, there will be a rebuttal. So I am not going to play that game even though the most obvious one as mentioned is Aretha Franklin. Whether it's pop, gospel, R&B. It doesn't matter. She's unmatched. Besides, Aretha you can name numerous female vocalists of all genres, even during that era who were better and more talented. Obviously, not to say Karen wasn't talented but she was nowhere near in stratosphere of many these singers especially Gospel and soul singers. They weren't just singing, they were sangin'. 😀

    Oh Shon! I thought you had already done Carpenters, I probably asked you to do so earlier and forgot. You picked a banger to start. I usually recommend Rainy Days and Mondays as a great intro that is less than Superstar but still a banger. The original title of the song was Groupie (Superstar) but Richard changed a line and the title to soften the song. Yes you heard EVERYTHING in this song. Oboe, French Horns, Violins, Harp and so much more. Oh they’re all guys surrounding Karen, long hair ruled the day. Great reaction! So glad you are now going down the rabbit hole.

      Is that the story? I've always heard it as a woman whose boyfriend/husband is a traveling musician and she rarely gets to see him. ETA Just checked on Songfacts. "Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett wrote this song, which is about a woman who falls for a rock star, has a tryst with him, but then in a bout of delusion awaits his return, apparently falling for it when he said he loved her." So we're both right lol

    So good of you to react to this song. Such a refreshing reaction. Karen is my brother's angel. He was into rock, southern rock, country, you name it. But when it came down to his favorite, Karen was the one. He never ever cared where we were or if he was in public or a party, if he played Karen Carpenter you damn well better listen. To the day he died he would've admitted that to anyone...he didn't care. If someone said, "Man she's boring" he would just say "She's perfect". We lost him somewhat mysteriously 4 years ago when he was 55. He had just died in his sleep. My sister and I continue playing Karen when we can and just reminisce. Karen was such a beautiful soul and it breaks my hearts she's gone. But then again I think, hey, maybe my brother and Karen are singing together and I feel content.

    Karen was a true treasure to this world. She was amazing at everything she did. She was pitch perfect/She had a 3 octave contralto range/she sang like an angel/ ahe played the drums. She was under so much pressure from the powers that be to look slim on stage, that in her late twenties she was diagnosed as Anorexic. And she sadly passed away in her early 30s from that awful disease. Yiu can see in some of the later photis of Karen, just how skinny she was. She was literally skin & bone. But.... I've really been enjoying your videos. Keep 'em coming! It's so fun to hear your first-time perspective on the music I grew up with. A few other songs I think you might enjoy: "Send Her My Love" by Journey, "Call Me When You're Sober" by Evanescence, "Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top, and "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues. By the way, Karen Carpenter was a phenomenal singer, but I believe she was initially the drummer of this band.

    Karen & Richard Carpenter were siblings. She could play the shit out of the drums too, look up those videos!

    Okay, her tone is just as clear and stunning as Patsy Cline’s. In many videos you’ll see Karen playing the drums.

    Hey, Shon, how about a Country song? Mark Chesnutt had an awesome song back in the 90's called "Almost Goodbye". I think you will enjoy it!

    Luther vandross cover this made me cry because he was singing it ...I saw him in concert before he died. Aaliyah was supposed to play that show but she had died in that plane crash a few days earlier. I still have questions.
