She's recognized as one of the best female singers in modern music. She was also an accomplished drummer, playing drums on many of their songs, with her brother, Richard, playing keyboard & singing backup vocals. She passed away from anorexia nervosa in her early 30's. Gone MUCH too soon. Thanks for your reaction.
I've heard that about her Ma too. Karen was a beautiful, classy, talented woman. She was also the drummer for the band. She had the SEXIEST BEDROOM VOICE!!! In a classy way of course!
They went into the studio to see if Richard’s arrangement of the song would “fit” for them. She read the lyrics off a napkin. Her vocals were so perfect that they used her first take for the lead vocal track on this studio recording… and started calling her “one take Karen.”
The movie scene in "Tommy Boy" with this song is hilarious. The song comes on the radio in the car and 2 guys pretend not to like it, and seconds later they're both singing along at the top of their lungs. 😂
I grew up with the Carpenters' music. Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days & Mondays", "For All We Know", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)", "I Need To Be In Love" & so many more.
I first saw Carpenters as Spectrum at the Whisky-A_GO_GO (early 1967) in LA fell in love with them. Then in a jazz club in Los Angeles (I think it was Shelly's Manne-Hole but do not remember for sure) in 1968 Karen was around 17 or 18). At that time they were a 3-piece band Richard on keyboards Karen on drums and Bill Sissoyev, who played the bass. Karen was a source of amazement there were few professional female drummers her age (few of any age in the 60's) even fewer female jazz drummers. A few female jazz singers, but no female drummers. She had a Ludwig drum kit that was like the set-up of Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello (one of her idols) and had mastered "Take 5" It was composed by Paul Desmond the sax player in Dave Brubeck Quartet in quintuple (5/4) meter to showcase drummer Morello. Again in 1968 on Your All American College Show her singing then did not impress me her drumming did they won. Then in 69 the album OFFERING latter change to TICKET TO RIDE came out. Her voice was devastatingly beautiful unlike anything I had heard before as good as her drumming. That was when I found that there is music which is not California (cool) Jazz all though their music kept some hint of their jazz background.
Myself, being from the early 60s, loved this duo and still do. Fabulous music, lyrics..everything. Great to see you taking it in Shon..fantastic reaction 🎤🎶
@@zigman8550 Categorizing pop singers or any other genre again is all about opinion on where that type of music fits. Aretha can be any genre she wants to be which includes pop music. There are a lot of R&B soul singers who have sung pop music. That's why I can't categorize genres. If you are a great singer, you can sing any genre and be great in it. And no matter who I say, there will be a rebuttal. So I am not going to play that game even though the most obvious one as mentioned is Aretha Franklin. Whether it's pop, gospel, R&B. It doesn't matter. She's unmatched. Besides, Aretha you can name numerous female vocalists of all genres, even during that era who were better and more talented. Your reviews rock! I read where one of the Beatles told her that she was the best female singer he had ever heard. She thought he was making fun of her and didn't believe him. She was one of the best. Peace from Northern Michigan.
Paul Mccartney thought she had the best female voice in the world.. John Lennon came up to her at a restaurant in los angeles as he was arriving and she was leaving and said to her "I just want to tell you luv, you have a fabulous voice"... She later told her brother Richard this and asked him if he thought Lennon was serious. Her brother said she never understood how great her voice and talent was...

I really love your enthusiasm and the fact that you really recognize the talent and depth of this music. Karen's brother, Richard is mostly responsible for the production and arrangements and the harmonies. It was a family effort.
I just love that you covered Karen and the arrangement by her brother. They were groundbreaking in their overdubbing in the studio and her voice and her percussion skills were outstanding. So sad she passed so young. Thank you Shon, you are my fav❤
Oh Shon! I thought you had already done Carpenters, I probably asked you to do so earlier and forgot. You picked a banger to start. The narrator of “Superstar” is… insane. The musician has never met her but she’s imagining he loves her because of the lyrics of a song he sang. One of the saddest songs ever, beautifully sung by Karen.

Karen & Richard Carpenter were siblings. She could play the shit out of the drums too, look up those videos!
Okay, her tone is just as clear and stunning as Patsy Cline’s. In many videos you’ll see Karen playing the drums.

Hey, Shon, how about a Country song? Mark Chesnutt had an awesome song back in the 90's called "Almost Goodbye". I think you will enjoy it!
Luther Vandross also has his version of this song.
Please do RAINY DAY MONDYS and WE ONLY JUST BEGUN and FOR ALL WE KNOW and SING by Carpenters !
Luther vandross cover this made me cry because he was singing it ...I saw him in concert before he died. Aaliyah was supposed to play that show but she had died in that plane crash a few days earlier. I still have questions.
