I don't think a degree is worthless. I have bachelor degree in cis but I started at the help desk and got my A+, network+, Security+ and Linux+. I was able to move to a junior Unix/Linux System Admin and now I am going into Devops. The truth is having a degree + certs have opened up doors for me. It has always been a requirement by many employers.
The lineups are as follows(for a job/career) 1. (People) Networking=who do you know 2. Experience=king 3. Certifications 4. Degrees :/ Most I.T graduates coming outta college these days for the most part have found it extremely difficult to land there first I.T job. Unless you are coming from an Ivy league University it's tough. Experience starting from the bottom builds that trust factor in employers. Certifications are the cherry on top that shows employers you mean business. College degrees generally displays dedication that you stayed long enough to receive a certificate. Kids got education. Now actually "show" me that you really do.
Yea it's kinda sad, I've met a few with degrees that can't land anything. Also a couple that have basic entry IT jobs because they arnt willing to keep studying and work on certs. Idk why people think you can just do school and then not study afterwards

i do not agree with what you said. I got a CS degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology (top 8 CS program). Everyone i knew had a job lined up 5-12 months before graduation. Average self reported pay is $90k. i’m a consultant with a huge tech firm doing cyber security /privacy mgmt. I didn’t take the developer role which could pay even higher. It’s a 92k a year job as an entry level college grad in Atlanta
I say if you can balance a part time helpdesk job and go to school, do it. After being in helpdesk, I found out pretty quickly that I did not want to stay helpdesk. I wanted to stay in technology though and when I looked around, jobs posting are asking for yes, experience but also that piece of paper. There are people at my job that don't see the value of a degree and well...they are still helpdesk and have been for upwards of 20+. Some like it, while others kind of see it as just decent money to answer some questions for 8 hours. Not saying that everyone's case, but everyone in my IT department that ISN'T helpdesk has a bachlors and above, with a less stressful job and a much bigger check. I have my degree in IT and combine with my experience, I'm able to spread my wings outside of helpdesk based jobs and nicer pay offers.Get into the field and see what you like, and you'll find out what exactly what is for you in this field.
I agree with everything in this video. I only recommend degreees for people who NEED that management job or for people straight out of high school. If you are 34 and looking to switch careers, DONT get a degree. Such a waste of time and money.
Zach, there's something I want to share. From what I've been told (by my mentors), the degree requirement on job postings is a way to screen people out, since recruiters are getting too many applications everyday. You can get around the degree requirement by reaching out directly to the recruiter/poster, and ask them if degree is actually a requirement, and most of them will tell you "no" if you fit 75% or more of other requirements. But like so many others have mentioned: getting a degree opens up so many doors, so if you're in the position to get it, go for it, because when you eventually get a job, it will be much harder for you to get a degree due to work and perhaps, family.
A degree makes you a well rounded individual who not only "knows" how to get the job done but also has an understanding of different processes, soft skills and technologies that make IT work. I have seen people who rush to get their BS in computer science because it's a requirement in many jobs as it should. You keep mentioning experience all the time but even David Bombal (arguably one of the best network engineers) has said that experience is often overrated.
I can definitely agree with what you are saying. I respect David Bombal and the things that he does, but the great part about people in our positions(meaning who have years of experience in different levels of I.T.) we are able to share our opinions based off of the things that we have experienced in our years of working in the field. As I said in the video I would never steer anyone away from a degree if that's what they feel like they need to do. There are many advantages to having a degree. There are some jobs you simply aren't even qualified for without having a degree, however with the big tech companies dropping those requirements in leu of experience/certifications that in my opinion shows how valuable people in the I.T. industry are who have built their careers from such, with no degree. Yet still, whichever, however, whatever way you decide to take down your path into the world of information technology your success can be dictated by the organizations that place requirements upon their candidates. Meaning if there are specific organizations or job roles that you would like to work for that require you have a degree, then it sounds like you should be getting a degree. However if you are satisfied working for any organization that will hire you based on your experience/certifications, that's an okay thing to do as well. At the end of the day you determine your success by the goals that you set for yourself. People like David Bombal, Du'an Lightfoot, Network Chuck, myself, we're al here trying to help people and share different perspectives from our experiences. It's ultimately up to you as an individual to pave your path.

Degrees are useless. I got my bachelor's degree in Computer information Systems in May of 2017. Since then I have only been able to get a job in a call center making $14 hr. Every time I apply for an entry level help desk position, they tell me I don't have any experience and that having a degree does not matter.
I don't really have any plans for a bachelor's degree after I finish my associate's that is already underway (only six classes left); I earned my A+ in August and will complete the CompTIA Trio. After that I will just keep earning Certs. With just my A+ and some college I just landed my first I.T. job. My resume is laden with factory and MIG welding experience. CompTIA's A+ cert allowed me to make that permanent career change. No more hot, dirty, sweaty factories!

I regret majoring in the subject but if I could I would change my major to Computer Science or even Computer Software Engineering, definitely something to do with computers. Math is not my strongest subject but I am willing to learn to make the money. My true desire is Writing novels (which is why I majored in English) but realized the R.O.I. for English majors is not good and it's better to keep writing fiction as a hobby than to whore around my stories. Now, I am making the best of situation an d found out that Technical Writing is the best profession for English majors in terms of pay. In this field, you write manuals and guides for mainly tech products such as Computers, Software Tools, and other products for IT, Programmers, Developers, and Engineers. The don't get paid as much as those job but it's a modest income and having knowledge of STEM subjects like Programming and Engineering is very helpful. Right now I am learning Software Tools and programming languages on my own and plan to take Computer Science and possibly some Engineering courses to get some hard skills. I also plan to get some certifications in the future since the help a lot in the field but if I cannot get into Technical Writing my next plan is to go into a Trade School or Community College and learn Web Design while writing and self-publishing novels on the side. Writing books is not about the money for em but if I do make some, I'll consider it a bonus. Hope your process of going to IT goes well for you. It's STEM or go home when it comes to University.
Let me also add this. A degree is not "entirely" a bad thing, but it's a check-in the box. It depends on where you're going afterwards. In the DoD world, certifications are king as well as experience. As I stated before, unless you are coming from some top graded school having a degree does not necessarily raises many eyebrows in and of itself. Now if you can ADD certifications too that degree, now you might be on to something big. Let's not kid ourselves into thinking a degree "alone" is going to ride you into the waves of I.T success. Sitting in a class for 4 years isn't entirely difficult. Getting a CISSIP, MCSE, CCNP, CEH, OSCP means you have the magic key.
I have an I.T Degree + Certs, however, getting the "experience" at a company is a struggle. Especially since I want to do cybersecurity and it requires a security clearance. My experience with my college is mostly hands-on experience when it comes to cybersecurity. Setting up VM's using snort and collecting the logs and writing a report about it. Reverse engineering binaries and writing reports to our "Client" and much more...
A degree may help but I don’t think it’s a game changer like I was lead to believe. I’m looking to get into IT and got my Masters this past December. Because of my lack of experience, nobody is biting. Currently studying for my Security +. Hope this helps me out. Please do your research before deciding on a Degree. I work at a community college and I love my job but they want you to have a bachelors before you can move up. So essentially there’s no growth except personal growth. I work full time and going to school for a bachelor isn’t something I want to lose my life to. My friends I work with have no outside life. It’s all school and work. Doesn’t seem like a life I want even if it’s for only a few years. I think I’ll just study for certs. Some day the pendulum will swing my way. :)

I just found out about your channel I want to thank you very much for everything you are doing, I am a high school graduate and want to go in the IT path. Sadly I do not have a mentor but these videos will help me a lot.
My advice if you’re trying to start fresh into IT straight out of high school with no experience is to earn as many certifications as you can and as you’re doing that, try to gain some customer service experience (work in a restaurant, grocery store, clothing store, whatever involves customer interaction). I’m in my fifth year of community college with no degree still. I plan to finish but not until they go back in person. So far I don’t plan to pursue a bachelors, but anything can change. In my opinion, many if not most IT companies will probably prefer experience and certifications over anything else. They will want to know you can get the job done. But other companies will still want you to have that degree (associates or higher). In conclusion, do what you feel is right in your heart, pray about it (no pun intended), and go from the experience that you harvest from making that decision. We all need to start somewhere. Experience in anything is better than no experience at all.
"IT" degrees at most colleges seem rather lackluster. They usually stick it in their business dept simply bc they have nowhere else to put it, and a lot don't even include any industry-standard certs.. And the whole "well-rounded curriculum" that most colleges espouse is, pardon my french, total horseshit. It ultimately a way for the colleges to make more money out of the students, which unfortunately put the students in even more debt. You can get well-rounded education on youtube, udemy, or many places on the internet in general, provided you have the motivation (which college ultimately doesn't provide you with anyway). Experience trumps everything, people will help you get your foot in the door, and you're certs will help you get noticed. IT degrees=mostly a waste of your time and money.
IT degrees exist because people couldn't handle Computer Science/Engineering and were dropping out by the dozens. Students dropping out means the college is unable to take their money anymore. So they take a watered down CS and business hybrid program and sprinkle a bunch of shiny enterprise tech support courses(that will be irrelevant in a few years) to keep people there and fool them into thinking it's an equivalent degree. It clearly is not. That's why these IT and IS degrees are shit for technical roles, but are decent for business/tech analyst and consultant roles.
Gonna need one if you plan on being in any type of management position. Most of the jobs in my area outside of those positions will substitute a degree for experience plus certs.
We need a survey of every8ne which currently holds a IT job and what level there at. That way we can tell how much more prosperous those with degrees are than those who do not have degrees. I myself have NO DEGREE. Edit: I now have my associates in computer information technology with a focus on programming.

I think the field of IT has become akin to the Wild West, where there is a need for formal academic, practicum, and a formal vetting criteria for individuals aspiring to join its professions, similar to other established fields. Nowadays, anyone can proclaim themselves an IT expert, resulting in businesses hiring unskilled IT personnel to save money. As a consequence, major IT projects frequently encounter delays and exceed their budgeted resources.
I'm 42, getting a bachelors in I.T, and teaching myself to code in my spare time, I figure that this late in life I need to be pretty well rounded in all things computer to be valuable to anybody, any suggestions for old construction workers trying to escape?
In the world of technology anything you learn from a degree will be ancient in 4-5 years (basically how long you took to get it). So if you don't land a job fast its a waste of time and money, plus you got to be paying the bank for a next 4-5 or more (if you even get a job, degree doesn't guarantee a job, its a scam). Only do it if you get some kind of scholarship or you feel you must. Certs virtually guarantee you know what you are doing, you can get a degree failing some courses and getting by with Cs and still graduate. Education is changing, anything the rich kids learned because they have the money to do so can be learn by the poor kid for dirt cheap. The only obstacle left to overcome is the myth of that piece of paper magically making them smarter than someone without it (that's why google dropped the requirement because the know its BS). Its only a matter of time, there will be a revolution in education thanks to technology.

From my experience in the North East US, degrees hold a lot more weight than certs, unless its a high level cert. Majority of jobs up here in my market require degree/experience as a must while have a cert is optional.
also on the note of FB and google dropping their degree requirements, you are still going to compete against individuals who have degrees for the same job.
i personally think persons with degrees would say its worthless because they wanna jump to a high position so quick with no experience their applying to high position jobs with no experience, you gotta start at the desk and work your way up especially if you only have certs and no experience, you gotta be humble guys stop try to bite more than you can crew just because you have a degree, but trust the process it gonna pay off soon
Working on my BS at WGU for Cybersecurity and information assurance. I will be done by September. It comes with a bunch of certs. Hopefully I can get a Cybersecurity job after that.
How good is an Applied Associates in IT with a Networking concentration? Program is to train you to get an A+, Network + and a CCNA. It'd be 2 years and I'm almost 40 but it'd be FREE.

Next step is to go for A+, Net+, CCNA and Java Professional Developer, Software tester and basics of Python, JavaScript and HTML+CSS certifications. If one could get employment without a degree, many would decline getting one However at this point in time, its still needed by many companies thus getting it, with certs and experience is the way to go.
In my case, university can be free. And university IS free in many countries. Also there's degrees online that are low-cost and maybe even free or considerably cheaper compared to US. What about the relevance of the degree in the case that it's low cost? I think every degree is different. I would still not personally go for one because of time. But if I would find one in the future once I settle down and want something to do to push my career, I'd consider it.
What about Bachelor of Applied Science IT degrees? I have an AAS in information systems technology and it seems like my only options are BAS degrees or have to take 6 more classes for an AS IT degree. Does it matter either way? Back when i was in high school, i'd get at least 9 certs based on microsoft office but now i'm slackin and yet im not sure if getting a degree is worth it because of loans etc. Reason why i prefer doing things online.

Joel the AS degree well outweighs the A+. Step it up to the next level and go for Net+, CCENT or beyond. All of our help desk guys have 3-5 certs and degrees. The market is super competitive these days.
Paid Internships then turn that into an offer or experience for a help desk.job. summer 2019 Internship season just started, look into the ones being offered in your nearest big city. NYC is about 18 minutes from my house so I'm lucky.
I'm former military and so basically college would be free for me, I'm in the middle of going to a 1 year program for IT or going 4 year to college for a degree. The only good thing about the 1 year program here is they have a on the job training right after the program set up for their students. I know universities does not do that, if anybody has their insight that would be amazing!

Guys I'm at a point right now where I will be finishing my 2 year IT Diploma soon and dont know if I should stay and get my degree. My mindset throughout school has been to do the 2 year and try to get some experience. And if it got to the point where it would be to get in my foot in the door then try volunteering just so I can get a sense of how things operate. You don't need a degree, just opportunity. You can get interviews for help desk positions with Just an A+ (speaking from personal experience).
Society needs to cultivate a mandate that mentor/apprenticeship programs should be ubiquitous in every job.

@@devante4489 Actually, I am majoring in English (not worthwhile by the way). I regret majoring in the subject but if I could I would change my major to Computer Science or even Computer Software Engineering, definitely something to do with computers. Math is not my strongest subject but I am willing to learn to make the money. My true desire is Writing novels (which is why I majored in English) but realized the R.O.I. for English majors is not good and it's better to keep writing fiction as a hobby than to whore around my stories. Now, I am making the best of situation an d found out that Technical Writing is the best profession for English majors in terms of pay. In this field, you write manuals and guides for mainly tech products such as Computers, Software Tools, and other products for IT, Programmers, Developers, and Engineers. The don't get paid as much as those job but it's a modest income and having knowledge of STEM subjects like Programming and Engineering is very helpful. Right now I am learning Software Tools and programming languages on my own and plan to take Computer Science and possibly some Engineering courses to get some hard skills. I also plan to get some certifications in the future since the help a lot in the field but if I cannot get into Technical Writing my next plan is to go into a Trade School or Community College and learn Web Design while writing and self-publishing novels on the side. Writing books is not about the money for em but if I do make some, I'll consider it a bonus. Hope your process of going to IT goes well for you. It's STEM or go home when it comes to University.
Let me also add this. A degree is not "entirely" a bad thing, but it's a check-in the box. It depends on where you're going afterwards. In the DoD world, certifications are king as well as experience. As I stated before, unless you are coming from some top graded school having a degree does not necessarily raises many eyebrows in and of itself. Now if you can ADD certifications too that degree, now you might be on to something big. Let's not kid ourselves into thinking a degree "alone" is going to ride you into the waves of I.T success. Sitting in a class for 4 years isn't entirely difficult. Getting a CISSIP, MCSE, CCNP, CEH, OSCP means you have the magic key.
I have an I.T Degree + Certs, however, getting the "experience" at a company is a struggle. Especially since I want to do cybersecurity and it requires a security clearance. My experience with my college is mostly hands-on experience when it comes to cybersecurity. Setting up VM's using snort and collecting the logs and writing a report about it. Reverse engineering binaries and writing reports to our "Client" and much more...
A degree may help but I don’t think it’s a game changer like I was lead to believe. I’m looking to get into IT and got my Masters this past December. Because of my lack of experience, nobody is biting. Currently studying for my Security +. Hope this helps me out. Please do your research before deciding on a Degree. It may or may not be the way to go for newbies.😭

I work at a community college and I love my job but they want you to have a bachelors before you can move up. So essentially there’s no growth except personal growth.
I work full time and going to school for a bachelor isn’t something I want to lose my life to. My friends I work with have no outside life. It’s all school and work. Doesn’t seem like a life I want even if it’s for only a few years. I think I’ll just study for certs. Some day the pendulum will swing my way. :)

I just found out about your channel I want to thank you very much for everything you are doing, I am a high school graduate and want to go in the IT path. Sadly I do not have a mentor but these videos will help me a lot.
My advice if you’re trying to start fresh into IT straight out of high school with no experience is to earn as many certifications as you can and as you’re doing that, try to gain some customer service experience (work in a restaurant, grocery store, clothing store, whatever involves customer interaction). I’m in my fifth year of community college with no degree still. I plan to finish but not until they go back in person. So far I don’t plan to pursue a bachelors, but anything can change. In my opinion, many if not most IT companies will probably prefer experience and certifications over anything else. They will want to know you can get the job done. But other companies will still want you to have that degree (associates or higher). In conclusion, do what you feel is right in your heart, pray about it (no pun intended), and go from the experience that you harvest from making that decision. We all need to start somewhere. Experience in anything is better than no experience at all.

"IT" degrees at most colleges seem rather lackluster. They usually stick it in their business dept simply bc they have nowhere else to put it, and a lot don't even include any industry-standard certs.. And the whole "well-rounded curriculum" that most colleges espouse is, pardon my french, total horseshit. It ultimately a way for the colleges to make more money out of the students, which unfortunately put the students in even more debt. You can get well-rounded education on youtube, udemy, or many places on the internet in general, provided you have the motivation (which college ultimately doesn't provide you with anyway). Experience trumps everything, people will help you get your foot in the door, and you're certs will help you get noticed. IT degrees=mostly a waste of your time and money.
IT degrees exist because people couldn't handle Computer Science/Engineering and were dropping out by the dozens. Students dropping out means the college is unable to take their money anymore. So they take a watered down CS and business hybrid program and sprinkle a bunch of shiny enterprise tech support courses(that will be irrelevant in a few years) to keep people there and fool them into thinking it's an equivalent degree. It clearly is not. That's why these IT and IS degrees are shit for technical roles, but are decent for business/tech analyst and consultant roles.
Gonna need one if you plan on being in any type of management position. Most of the jobs in my area outside of those positions will substitute a degree for experience plus certs.

We need a survey of every8ne which currently holds a IT job and what level there at. That way we can tell how much more prosperous those with degrees are than those who do not have degrees. I myself have NO DEGREE.

@@CoLdBl0oD93 still in my same role. Although I got hired and promoted before getting my AS. No changes on my end. From what I see a BS will defined get you through HR and will allow you to demand a higher pay quicker. A Masters degree is ideal

Nowadays, anyone can proclaim themselves an IT expert, resulting in businesses hiring unskilled IT personnel to save money. As a consequence, major IT projects frequently encounter delays and exceed their budgeted resources.
I'm 42, getting a bachelors in I.T, and teaching myself to code in my spare time, I figure that this late in life I need to be pretty well rounded in all things computer to be valuable to anybody, any suggestions for old construction workers trying to escape?
In the world of technology anything you learn from a degree will be ancient in 4-5 years (basically how long you took to get it). So if you don't land a job fast its a waste of time and money, plus you got to be paying the bank for a next 4-5 or more (if you even get a job, degree doesn't guarantee a job, its a scam). Only do it if you get some kind of scholarship or you feel you must. Certs virtually guarantee you know what you are doing, you can get a degree failing some courses and getting by with Cs and still graduate. Education is changing, anything the rich kids learned because they have the money to do so can be learn by the poor kid for dirt cheap. The only obstacle left to overcome is the myth of that piece of paper magically making them smarter than someone without it (that's why google dropped the requirement because the know its BS). Its only a matter of time, there will be a revolution in education thanks to technology.
These days you must have a degree, A+ cert AND 1 year of experience just to get into a help desk position, somebody correct me if I’m wrong, because I wish I am...
From my experience in the North East US, degrees hold a lot more weight than certs, unless its a high level cert. Majority of jobs up here in my market require degree/experience as a must while have a cert is optional.
also on the note of FB and google dropping their degree requirements, you are still going to compete against individuals who have degrees for the same job.
the degree will get your foot in the door, experience is what'll take you to higher levels and pay.
i personally think persons with degrees would say its worthless because they wanna jump to a high position so quick with no experience their applying to high position jobs with no experience, you gotta start at the desk and work your way up especially if you only have certs and no experience, you gotta be humble guys stop try to bite more than you can crew just because you have a degree, but trust the process it gonna pay off soon
Working on my BS at WGU for Cybersecurity and information assurance. I will be done by September. It comes with a bunch of certs. Hopefully I can get a Cybersecurity job after that.

Thanks Zach for inspiring videos, that helps a lot. I'm currently doing EBCI and ECDL, which won't give me a degree, but at least diploma. Next step is to go for A+, Net+, CCNA and Java Professional Developer, Software tester and basics of Python, JavaScript and HTML+CSS certifications. In my case, university can be free. And university IS free in many countries. Also there's degrees online that are low-cost and maybe even free or considerably cheaper compared to US. What about the relevance of the degree in the case that it's low cost? I think every degree is different. I would still not personally go for one because of time. But if I would find one in the future once I settle down and want something to do to push my career, I'd consider it.

What about Bachelor of Applied Science IT degrees? I have an AAS in information systems technology and it seems like my only options are BAS degrees or have to take 6 more classes for an AS IT degree. Does it matter either way? Joel the AS degree well outweighs the A+. Step it up to the next level and go for Net+, CCENT or beyond. All of our help desk guys have 3-5 certs and degrees. The market is super competitive these days.
Paid Internships then turn that into an offer or experience for a help desk.job. summer 2019 Internship season just started, look into the ones being offered in your nearest big city. NYC is about 18 minutes from my house so I'm lucky.
I'm former military and so basically college would be free for me, I'm in the middle of going to a 1 year program for IT or going 4 year to college for a degree. The only good thing about the 1 year program here is they have a on the job training right after the program set up for their students. I know universities does not do that, if anybody has their insight that would be amazing!

I have a degree in Organizational Communication with experience working with different people from my nonprofit background. I am signing up for a exam preparation course at Florida Technical College which will help me get ready for the A+ exam. In the end, I will get a certificate of completion and vouchers that will pay for me to take the exams.

Guys I'm at a point right now where I will be finishing my 2 year IT Diploma soon and dont know if I should stay and get my degree. My mindset throughout school has been to do the 2 year and try to get some experience. And if it got to the point where it would be to get in my foot in the door then try volunteering just so I can get a sense of how things operate. Degree will always be there but I'm wondering would it be a game changer ? I dont know guys I feel like a career change can happen to me also if i were too push another 2 years out knowing that I'm opening myself to things that would be hard to demonstrate at a job environment.
