I was born in Beckley. After my Dad died my Mom remarried & we moved to Ohio. We spent almost every summer with my Dads family in West Virginia. Best life ever in those mountains, rivers & streams. Imagine riding in the back of a pickup truck, arms resting on the top cab hanging on through those winding roads. Almost Heaven 😊
I really enjoyed this video. I used to visit West Virginia for a month every other year. But now no car of money to do so, so I miss West Virginia. I have to depend on videos like yours to get my West Virginia fix. I especially like the fact your drove through neighborhoods.
I have never been to WV, but I really want to go .... and I've considered WV as a new home .... the city of Beckley, in particular, as it has all the 'amenities' I'd like to find (meaning stores, restaurants, and banks, basically) in my next home .... and the scenery is beautiful!
I was born in Beckley, lived there til age 9. I grew up in the Chicago area where I still live, but consider Beckley one of the prettiest cities I've lived in. Beautiful memories.
Great drive down memory lane. I grew up in Beckley, I moved away 44 years ago. Robert C Byrd drive was still Valley Drive, the justice center in downtown was a GC Murphy store. A lot has changed but so much has stayed the same. You drove by my house on Harper Rd just down from the hospital, which at the time was thought of as a new hospital. Thanks for the ride, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
My uncle owned the Exxon station where that cvs is now. And my grandfather owned his own coal trucking company and parked his coal trucks behind there and I grew up on beckley ave.
I lived here for 5 years from 1970 -75. We built a television station in Beckley (WSWP) with transmitter on a distant mountain. I remember my home address as Rt 1 box 93E. Good times.
Drove by Crescent Rd. (where I went thru 3rd grade) , Woodlawn Ave. (where I lived in a garage apt when I was 5 or so), First Baptist Church (where I was baptized), Williams Street (where I was born), what used to be Murphys (where I sang Jingle Bells ? over the store intercom while visiting Santa) and Johnstown Road (on the way to my Granny's house on Orchard Ave). Moved away in 1960.
Most all of my family was born and/or raised here. I haven’t been there since 2015. Most of the family moved away. It’s sad that there aren’t jobs and that most of the land still belongs to big coal so you can’t buy it. It’s a beautiful place with beautiful people. I miss it! ❤
I saw King Tut closed after 60+ years of business. My grandparents would take us there every weekend we stayed. As an adult I would go every time I visited.
Im from beckley. King tut sort of merged with leisure lanes, their kitchen got a bunch of the items from king tuts menu and the employees have been working there too. Still sucks the drive in is shut down
Wow, just left Beckley about a week ago after living there for a few months. Moved to VA. So really, everything looks just like I remember it. Good video regardless mate.
When I was growing up in the 1960s all the shopping was on Neville and Prince Streets. Later I attended what was then called Beckley College and the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.
What is Beckley College called today and do they still have one, couldn't find any college in Beckley. Almost went there but chose a college in Massachusetts instead.
I have long been researching Beckley as a possible future home .... and I was stunned to find out, recently, that the population is only 16,700! .... Rarely will you, for instance, find an Olive Garden in a city that 'small' .... *** but anyway, I'd love to get out of blue state Illinois and move to a red state with gorgeous scenery, moutains, a lot of rain, and all my fave restaurants .....
I bought a couple of houses in Welch and a lot of parcels of land in Beckley and just like you I have not moved there yet.It looks like easy driving there so it should be fine.I am going there next week so then I will finally see this place.
Off the top of my head I would say I-77 between Charlotte and Columbia. I-40 between OKC and Albuquerque is up there too. Also I-10/I-20 from El Paso to Dallas ranks high on the boring list.
@@MileageMikeTravels I haven’t traveled either of those. For me it would be the Florida Turnpike from Kissimmee to Fort Pierce. There are no exits for 40-50 miles in this stretch, so if you accidentally go the wrong way, it’ll take you like an hour and a half to get back to where you were. And there is NOTHING to see. There are no hills or anything, and it’s just extremely boring terrain. Alligator Alley is up there as well, but it’s slightly shorter and isn’t quite as desolate. Although I’d say any interstate in florida is extremely boring when you’re not in a big city. Very long, flat, and straight, and nothing to see. Lots of traffic as well
So far, the comments about this place are really nice, people love it. It's a shame that most moved out.. Is there no jobs there any more, or very few??
Hi . I'm looking up where my grandparents are from. Never got to meet them. But my grandfather was a coal miner. John Sullivan Cox. Then after a cave in the Mine They moved to Ohio.
My niece is a real estate agent in Beckley, she listed a 3 bedroom house with 10 acres in Glen Daniel last summer for $169k, that would be a $400k property in North Georgia where I live.
@@keithplumley2054 I understand, i lived in NY on Long Island previously and live in NC now, Long Island probably 4 MILLION with that much acreage. WV is a nice place to live providing you can pay for the house cash, thats what i did in Quinwood but right now its just a weekend once in a while hideaway
@@Bornjamerican24 West Virginia is the most mountainous state in the U.S. Mountainous roads means steep grades and very curvy, windy roads. The worst time to drive in the mountains is when weather is horrible or it is night time. Charleston isn't as mountainous or Huntington
No opportunity for young people. Other then WVU Tech which is wonderful. However once they graduate students leave. Hardly any decent housing. Not many jobs at all. Beckley sadly has fallen victim to the opioid epidemic x10 for over 15 years. No population growth. I’m not saying it’s the worst place but it’s definitely not a place I’d recommend if your looking for opportunities in life. I live uptown where most of all the buildings are crumbling. It has a few little shops. But that’s it . Recently King Tut closed. I love my sleepy little town. I’ll be here till the day I die. Maybe one day someone or something will save our City. It has great potential.

I am proud to be a Beckley boy

Nice video of Beckley WV. I have been through this lovely city and it's still beautiful.
It is
That intersection at 3:11? In 1975, i had to open the passenger door and puke as we rolled through there. LoL
Wow! Beautiful area in West Virginia! What town is next? Do more videos like this one video¡
Beautiful town. I used to work with a lovely lady that lived (s) in Beckley, Alice Harris, wonder how she's doing?
Grew up on Northwestern Ave. Left in 1980....miss it sometimes.

Whoa that was intense!
Indeed
Grew up on Harper Road for the first 7 years and then just behind the Taco stand for the next 10.
Absolutely Positively, physically, Undeniably and reliably deserted!
Another good video. 👍
Used to drive through Beckley on the Interstate, but never went into town. Not a bad looking place.
How far from Elkins is Beckly? I’ve been to Elkins, Seneca Rocks and Petersburg many, many times but never had the chance to visit Beckly
150 miles, about 2 1/2 hours.
Thank you i like your videos .
Just passed my road! Crescent😁😁😁
Only rich, white folks used to stay on your road.😁
Great video 😊
Thanks! 😊

King Tut just closed down last month. Great place. My late Mother and my sister worked there. This town lost many great businesses.
Are you going to summer village west Virginia
Hey, Mike! Can we get a Charleston, WV?
