How to Fix a Broken Key or Remote Loop (Keychain Loop, Truck Key, Fob Loop, Keychain Loop Broken)

- I recently bought a used car and the previous owner had broken the loop on the only key I got, making it very difficult to keep track of. I also go camping a lot so I was worried about storing it or keeping it in my pocket for fear that it would get lost.
So, I deiced to use some putty type epoxy to repair the key. I'm really pleased with the end result and want to share it in case you were facing the same problem and looking for a solution.

Oh thank you so much for the video! That’s exactly my issue. Trying to figue out cimputer tag words for this repair was difficult, but here you are! Thank you so much!
Awesome! Glad it was helpful!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Awesome, glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for sending this out. See how many appreciate it?
No problem! And glad it’s helpful!
Very cool. The final shape with the bed liner looks like a tiny antique telephone 📞 🤣
Haha, good point! It's not the prettiest stuff (probably could have done some actual filing and tried to make it look nicer and it may have come out pretty well) but it's super functional and solved my problem for cheap! My brain is already coming up with other ideas for this stuff. Thanks for watching!
I actually did it. Its not perfect but i made it super sturdy. So much better than spending more than what my truck is worth on a replacement key.
Nice!
Thank you! I just broke the keyring loop on my Mazda pickup key today. A new chip key is almost $100 for my pickup. I will definitely repair my key using your great idea.
Yeah, I was in the same boat! Mine is still holding up great too. Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for making this video....just what i needed...heading to hardware store soon
Glad it was helpful! Good luck!
Is there no key cover with loop hole?
There might be?
The main crux of Nissan keys is if you can harvest the transponder chip. Some of those 200+ keys have a little door at the base of the key shaft that contains the transponder key. If it does you can get the transponder out and then put it into all kinds of aftermarket keys. For my 2002 Pathfinder, I keep one standard key for offroad and I also have a flip key integrated into a fob for daily driving. fob programming is easy as pie and replacement keys are cheap to buy and cut, it's the transponder that makes all the difference. One of my keys it was a simple as opening the little door and the transponder fell out. In another, it was kept in there by a foamy adhesive - I basically had to destroy the plastic around the door to get that one out.
Huh, good to know! The best surprise is that I left my WeBoost on the other day and when I tried to manually unlock the door with the key, I found out that it doesn't work, :D. So, I may be getting a second key that corresponds to a new lock cylinder in the door. Fun times when you buy used vehicles! :D
That stuff is awesome I’ve used it on all kinds of stuff you actually can drill and tap it and it works on just about anything besides wood Once it gets to the stage where it starts harding you can lightly wetting it to smooth out the surface if you would like to so you don’t have to sand it
Good to know! Also glad that others have had good experiences with it. I'm excited to see what else I can do with it. I'm sure there are tons of applications! Thanks for the comment!
Excellent fix. My after market alarm remote loop broke. It's amazing on how thin they make the loop on that stuff. Friggin imbeciles. But i like to add I would not put any epoxy in the middle of the clip. Keep it metal. Would make it much easier to slip onto a key ring. The main thing is it stays bonded to the main part. Great fix!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks this is going to be my weekend project
Good luck! Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, I will try this
Glad it was helpful! My key is still holding strong too.
Nice...Great Job 👍👏👍👏
Thanks!
Great job
Thanks!
How are you going to replace the battery??
No batteries to replace in these old transponder chip keys.
Yes, I need help trying to fix mine too.A broke yesterday
Hopefully this helps!
Same broken nissan key problem that I am having !!!$
Hopefully this helped!
Is it still good after 2 years?
Yep! Still holding up fine!
Has this been a lasting fix?
Still going strong to this day!
@@AllThingsOverlanding I did this. Worked great for about a year and eventually disintegrated.
@@gardengrower7633 Mines still going strong.
What do you mean that it is inexpensive? The reason why we would want to fix this problem is because these keys have a chip inside and they are really expensive to get a copy, only the dealers have that original type of key. In the past I have tried to use replacement non branded, and they are terrible, they actually break much faster.
Did you watch the video? My key was fine functionally, but the loop broke. I used hardening plastic putty to fix the loop so that I could keep using the OEM key without paying a dealership to replace it, thus saving me tons of money and resolving the problem cheaply.
@@AllThingsOverlanding yes I did see the video, I was just asking what are you referring to when you say that this is an inexpensive thing ? It may be an misunderstanding, you probably mean that the fix is inexpensive, but the way you said it seems that the key is inexpensive to replace. I had to go back and re-hear it several times, and I still interpreted that you meant that the key is in expensive to replace.
@@KarlaJorge Sorry, nope. I meant that the putty stuff is a cheap way to repair the key, :D. Sorry for the confusion!
Im tryin to think of what those things are called u could put over your key that has a loop..some would prob come in rubber but idk what to search and kinda would be afraid id lose it unless it was metal but then afraid if it was metal it would disrupt the chip in the key...sorry my a.d.d kicked in a lil haha
Haha, rubber key covers maybe? Like this? amzn.to/42Ba7jv
Great Video!!
What is name of the metal clip you are using!!
I look forward to
your response!!
New Subbie!!😊
Glad to have you as a subscriber! That clip is just a run-of-the-mill paperclip. Hope that helps!
Smack it against the table 10 times....
:D
Would have liked to see a key ring that would accept something that large….lol, that was your only mistake.
Haha, I mean it took a little stretching but it’s been on my key ring since I fixed it and so far so good!
My key fob is $200.00 + taxes, that is insane.
Yeah, it’s crazy especially when the key works fine but the plastic loop breaks.
What kind of keyfob do you need I can you one at a good price
EH U COULD HAVE JUST DRILLED A SMALL HOLE IN THE CORNER
Ha, that's how the previous owner had solved it and then when that broke off, there really wasn't enough real estate to drill another hole (which likely would have just broken again. This has held up since I did it and it's still intact today.
Look like sheet
I’m sure you could do better!
