I always thought Musa was Asian growing up?? I'm also confused why they didn't capitalize on Y2K aesthetic that is huge rn. Nothing about this show makes sense. I'm also kinda confused by their decision to make Stella a mean girl in show, in cartoon she was kinda refreshing for the "girly" character. She was kinda vain and stuff, but she wasn't a jerk to her friends and her vanity was addressed and eleborated on later on which made her a better person. It's kinda messed up to me that a cartoon for kids had more depth then this show lol
Musa is Asian, East Asian to be specific, she was inspired by Lucy Liu. And yes!! I was so hoping with the revamp of literally the original WINX style in modern fashion they’d capitalize on that obsession! And also yes! I liked Stella in the original, I thought she was a little self absorbed, but somehow in an endearing way. The live action Stella is simply appalling. Smh. This could’ve been so great...

Her being adopted was a big part of her first arc in the show it was something she was dealing with and it was relatable for alot of people who were adopted but still wanted to know more about their birth parents but now thats cut out because bloom cant have a good storyline can she

Tecna. I was Tecna in my winx club. They didn't even mention her. You know how included math/ academically well people felt through Tecna. She was so coool and made intellectuality look as interesting as Musa's music. Even her BF Timmy was such a expressive, smart and sensitive guy paired with rather rational and practical girl. That was so rare.
The color coding for characters could have been executed well IF: they weren't dressed like 30 year olds in 2010 and if the show was more connected to the source material in that it's a bright fantasy. If they wanted a dark show about fairies they should have dropped the aspects that ground it in being like a cartoon. If the goal was to balance cartoon and live action, they failed miserably.
I’m pretty sure the person who designed the outfits was used to designing clothes for thirty year olds and up. The costume designer made clothes for the Desperate Housewives show. Why did Netflix choose her? I completely agree with all of your points. Before this god awful show came out, Winx brought back a sense of nostalgia. Now when I think of Winx, I also think about this cringe show.
If they wanted a dark show about fairies, why not just adapt w.i.t.c.h. That had a lot of dark themes and literally dark colors. Or make something new (I know, I know, money.)

Like the actual winx cartoon dealt with some 'darker themes' like an arranged marriage and literal genocide but no that clearly isn't what they meant by darker themes. Like all of the relationships in the cartoon were really well developed with little jelousy between the girls but no they had to have a jelousy plot or else it's not 'dark and gritty'. Netflix thinks "dark" means underage drinking and teens swearing. And there's something evil lurking in the shadows but the good pretty protagonist can save the day (edit spelling)
when the original casting came out the actress playing Terra was listed as playing Flora, which was eventually changed (in my opinion because of white washing accusations). but like, even though it's technically a "new character," we all know it was supposed to be Flora and they changed it to save their asses tbh. I feel like Netflix wanted to cast a plus sized character and forgot that women can be plus sized and POC.
I agree. Also I think the statement "It's Not Whitewashing" because they're technically different characters (retroactively, though originally she WAS cast as Flora) is not accurate. Maybe the character is not "teeeeeeechnically" whitewashed since she is a different character, but the show ITSELF is whitewashed. They did not change the entire cast of characters and keep it diverse, they removed one of the three POC, made the other white, and left one. The rest of the characters (the white ones) were left untouched. That IS whitewashing, and arguing semantics (wrongly) is missing the point. Love you Amanda, but you're not quite on the mark here IMO.
Also to your point- I totally agree that they neglected the fact that you can have a POC who is also plus sized, but they also forgot that you can have a POC AND a plus sized person. There's no "limit" on how many "diverse" characters you can have!!

I 100% agree with you in this one. The character IS whitewashed, no matter how much they try to hide it now. And I don't see how people still get fooled by the fact that they just changed her name last minute and made her "a cousin" of Flora's, because, if it were true that they were cousins, and then Flora shows up in a later season to be Hispanic or Latina, how does that even work? Are they distant cousins? Adoptive? Like how can you be close family (literally your parents are siblings) and both be a different race altogether? I would get it if Terra was mixed race, but she's full white. No way she has a Latina cousin. Smh.
The poisoning Sky scene was also funny because he opened a water bottle, took the tiniest itty bitty fake sip, then immediately closed it and put it aside again. Like… were you even thirsty? And then THAT was strong enough to knock him out within a minute? But not enough to affect Bloom who put her mouth on his right after?

Also, Terra talks about how it's her first year as a student after growing up in the school. Plus, I can't remember the episode but I'm 99% certain someone comments on why Stella, a second year, was rooming with 1st years.

tecna is hinted at in the intro scene thing with the wings. If you look at it, there are 6 wings, Stella, Flora (terra), Musa, Aiesha, Bloom. And one more. That is tecnas colours. Pink and blue/green
Actually they did originally white wash Flora. In the original scripts and casting calls Tera was Flora. They rewrote her to be Tera when they realized people would be p*ssed that Flora was now white.
My thing is like... in the original Winx Club, the girls were in college. Like, they were older than most other tween-girl-show protagonists. They'd go out on the town, have parties, and all that stuff (obviously a PG-rated version of all that, but the point still stands). And I love that! There was drama in the show, sure, but the main characters didn't hate each other unnecessarily or cause drama just because. They didn't totally get along at first, but they quickly learned to care about each other and get along. And that's what college is like!!! You grow out of all that petty high school drama. You learn to look beyond that kind of stuff and just. You get along with everyone unless you have a real reason not to. And I absolutely hate that they changed that about the show.
The school in the Winx club cartoon is called a college, but the students there are usually between 16-18. They're all teenagers that are basically still in highschool, and from what I remember of the show their behavior matches that. They don't hate each other, but there was a level of jealousy, they would sneak out at night to hang with boys, and worry about which boy would ask them to the dance. Also the show was rated Y7 so the partying and stuff was even more tame than PG.

Semilocon The girls weren’t even color coded in the original show. Their casual outfits were mixes of different colors. Their transformation outfits were color coded, but only the basic transformation and not Enchantix or Believix.
LOL TRUEEE. I really sometimes wonder if the costume designers have the credentials to be doing this. Cuz it seems like all they did was go "Bloom=Fire, Fire is red, let's dress Bloom in red" for all the characters. This was lazy and awful costume designing, and that's speaking from who has never studied it.

@@iwakeupandboomimarat The costume designer for the show was Catherine Adair, who primarily worked on shows and films about middle aged women and adults (most notably, the desperate housewives). she probably has a lot more experience dressing skinny women as well. i really think they should have gotten somebody else to be in charge of costume design because while she's talented, her skills don't really translate well into dressing teenagers in a show that's supposed to be inspired by a cartoon. and especially with Terra, there were definitely ways to have her character stand out and by stylish while also wearing green.

Having Terra replace Flora as a main character is still an excuse to whitewash. 1, The actress playing Terra was originally announced to be Flora early on, but was then changed to Terra to avoid whitewashing complaints. 2, having her be literally the same character as flora, same personality and everything, is literally just making a white version of a character. 3, if they REALLY wanted to make Terra Flora’s cousin, they still could’ve cast a Latina actress to play her! They could’ve made Flora’s cousin also Latina but they didn’t, because Terra was written in as a way to get away with whitewashing.

It does make sense that she could be white but it should be shown she's mixed heritage by introducing Flora. I'm mixed (mexican/american) and while I look much darker, similar to my mother, my sibling is white passing. They look just like my dad but paler. Whenever they would mention that they were mexican/american, people didn't believe them and bullied them for it too (some even made rumors that my mom kidnapped them). It would be interesting to see that sort of stigma against mixed families brought up.
For real as someone who isn't American I never got why the American accent is seen as the default for media, sure most media is made in America but I wish characters having a non- American accent didn't get questioned cuz they don't sound American :/

It's 2021, why is Whitewashing STILL going on?! Aisha is the only main character of colour, yet she's the fairy we learn the least about in the first season.

However, it is true that her character is not developed enough, but then again no character is developed enough in that show. in general, all characters are very inconsistent.
I think the funny thing is that in the original Aisha/ Layla was introduced in the second season as the mysterious character. The whole thing about her powers weakening in the original had to do with the villain draining her magic at one point

And like it’s less the actual age they look and more how they write and style the characters. The youngest is actually 19, so technically a teenager, but the "teenage" cast is otherwise in their 20's, and my god, some actually look so young that it's easy to think they cast people younger than their characters. The girl who plays Daniel's daughter doesn't look old enough to drive, yet she's 17 or so in the show. Just proof that you can find adults who look young enough to play teenagers convincingly.

The cartoon was way more diverse and actually took risk in story telling, it was so bold and as I kid I loved their friendship and watch them go through struggles together. This live action just felt like a slap of reality that Hollywood don't care they just want money out of us, The show is one big ass clickbait.
What we wanted: Friendship, Healthy relationships, badass antagonists, Y2K fashion What we got: Broken mean girl, edgy and BS lead character, main characters turned to background characters(Musa and Aisha), and dead people that keep coming back to life.

One aspect I always found interesting about the original Winx Club friendships was how the girls had even stronger bonds through their powers too. Yeah, they were all roomies and got into hijinks together and supported each other but I could see links that made sense. Stella and Bloom, light and fire, being besties makes sense especially with their first meeting being Bloom saving Stella. Techna and Musa being close too. Even Aisha/Layla and Flora being close in later seasons made sense (water and plants). It's those little things that made the show interesting for me even it was just a subconscious reach on my part! Plus the colors! The fashion! THE FASHION! It's sad... Thanks for this summary because phew now I really don't even have to hate watch it lol
What bothers me the most is the people who praise that live action trash. I grew up with and watched every single version of winx. So it’s really painful seeing such an awful remake be number #1 Netflix. I can’t help but be angry every time I hear about fate.

Winx Club used to be my shit when I was younger and had a big impact on my childhood and pre-teen/early teen years, since it inspired me to become more creative with my drawing, writing fanfiction and imaginary Winx OC characters. Overall, I consider it to be my favorite childhood show alongside W.I.T.C.H. and Digimon. So, when I saw that Netflix was turning it into a live-action show, I didn't have the biggest of hopes for it and actually thought they might put in some effort into in. But guess what, this show is an absolute dumpster fire trash and it can't be compared to the original animated show. Even though I didn't watch it, it looked absolutely horrible in the trailer. And for the lack of diversity between the casting choices, I totally agree! At least in the original version they attempted to have three inclusive characters within the six fairies (Musa, Layla and Flora), but here, they wiped their asses with an attempt at having inclusive characters. Whitewashing Flora and turning her into a dollar-store version of her own self? Come on!! Overall, this show is a waste of everyone's time and brain cells. It sucks!

Also the main plot is almost identical to .hack//sign except it effects all characters instead of only one.
In the original files, she was called Flora. They just backpedaled. They somehow didn't think to just have a plus sized latina character, and retconned "oh, they're separate! See??"
I feel like the original cartoon Aisha wanted nothing to do with control. I remember them showing her constantly being controlled and told what to do as a kid, and then she made a friend who taught her how to let go and have fun. So it feels weird the remake would just change her whole character like that and make her obsessed with control and discipline. Guess that shows how much the netflix writers knew about the show.
The way the show made make a freaking Fairy School look like any other human high school... I was like... what? Lol. I didn't want to stay there more than a minute. And I'm surprised you didn't mention Riven and his "jokes".
The only thing I'd go "to be fair" about is that in the beginning they made an offhand comment about transformation not being around for a long time, thus why the wings were not around, which honestly just makes this more fanfictiony
when i heard that i was like ok that makes sense they wanna make it more realistic. If that was they only thing they changed i would be fine with it but they changed so much.
Well, the main reason they said transformation magic and wings had been gone for a while was to simply cut costs on animation. Even then I found Bloom’s wings so ugly and was utterly disappointed their clothes didn’t even change into something even remotely like the outfits from the original. I don’t think they could even fly, so what’s the point of giving them transformations if all it is just ugly wings that can’t fly?
I knew it was going to be bad without even watching it tbh. I loved Winx as a kid and w.i.t.c.h and all that stuff. Please leave those shows alone!! Stop trying to make them for adults

I *HATE* that every teen-young adult show nowadays always has to be “edgy and dark” and involve sex, drugs, and murder, etc. Some shows do suit that kind of style and do it well (euphoria) but now it’s like every show has that kind of vibe.
The fairies and princesses ( and even the villains, but in darker colors)in once upon a time had glittery and sparkly outfits and that show had some pretty dark moments too.
The "changeling" part was taken from Celtic mythology! If you look more into that side of it, then you'll get what the big deal is. Actually pretty cool that they included that, but seems like they did a poor job of explaining it.
I noticed this in the first moment, however blooms reaction didn't make sense to me, like fairies who did that were bad, so why would you want to meet them?
The problem is...if bloom is a changeling, then the fairies kidnapped her parents'¥ real baby daughter and most likely killed her. Which probably is going to be used to make the relationship between bloom and her parents worse.

Bloom: Breaks Rosalind out of prison. Lies to and betrays everyone she's close to on order to keep Rosalind safe. Follows Rosalind into the a dark forest alone at night. Helps Rosalind to charge her powers so that she can do whatever she wants. Believes everything Rosalind tells her about her and Alfea's past. Also Bloom: "You want to teach me?? I don't even know you!!!
I understood the Aisha deal as not her suddenly losing control but rather struggling with this one task (and having overcome a lot of struggles in the past, being in control and working hard), while Bloom just gets it with a tiny bit of struggle at first. I thought it was a suprsingly self aware look at 'the chosen one' getting it all with litte effort and Aisha was reasonably frustrated
I watched it in a day and I don't even know why. I guess I just needed a distraction and that seemed bad enough to not get fully obsessed over. The most annoying part was that it had such a nice concept but they ruined it all with laziness. Just like in the Vampire Diaries where Elena always had to be the most important one, even when her best friends suffered because of this, in this show it was the same with Bloom. What I found utterly ridiculous was when all the girls except for Aisha decided to help her free Beatrix, the confirmed murderer, and then Aisha was forced to apologize for being a snitch, even though she directly said that Bloom's actions were selfish and endangering. I was like... WHAT?!
I am so happy that you brought up the fact that the girls were barely friends. I feel like they had less than 10 different scenes with all of them together. Also the show used phones way too much and the fashion made them look a lot older than 16.
I'm not going to lie, the whole storyline had me confused at the end. As soon as she released Rosalind, nothing made sense. I don't even understand if Rosalind is on the bad side or she's just power hungry.

The reason that the Queen would rather her daughter be know to have blinded a classmate on purpose rather than by accident is because of the nature of the monarchy. This monarchy rules through fear, not love. As such, it is better for them that the daughter is known to be cruel, rather than inept. This way the fear can be maintained.

One major question that was most obvious to me like immediately when Bloom found out she was a changeling is “what happened to the human baby your parents originally had that you replaced?” Did anyone else notice that literally nobody ever makes any mention of it - including Bloom’s parents when she tells them? Like Bloom is so self-obsessed she never stops to think about what this revelation might mean for her parents, and the show runners are so obsessed with Bloom that they don’t care enough to draw the attention away from her for even a second to think about her parents as people. They literally only see other characters as instruments or objects to advance the plot around Bloom, not as fully developed characters in their own right

I always thought Musa was Asian growing up?? I'm also confused why they didn't capitalize on Y2K aesthetic that is huge rn. Nothing about this show makes sense. I'm also kinda confused by their decision to make Stella a mean girl in show, in cartoon she was kinda refreshing for the "girly" character. She was kinda vain and stuff, but she wasn't a jerk to her friends and her vanity was addressed and eleborated on later on which made her a better person. It's kinda messed up to me that a cartoon for kids had more depth then this show lol
Musa is Asian, East Asian to be specific, she was inspired by Lucy Liu. And yes!! I was so hoping with the revamp of literally the original WINX style in modern fashion they’d capitalize on that obsession! And also yes! I liked Stella in the original, I thought she was a little self absorbed, but somehow in an endearing way. The live action Stella is simply appalling. Smh. This could’ve been so great...

Why were they so negative on Bloom’s parents? Her parents were super lovely and when the dad was fighting a fire he found Bloom and they adopted her.

Her being adopted was a big part of her first arc in the show it was something she was dealing with and it was relatable for alot of people who were adopted but still wanted to know more about their birth parents but now thats cut out because bloom cant have a good storyline can she

Tecna. I was Tecna in my winx club. They didn't even mention her. You know how included math/ academically well people felt through Tecna. She was so coool and made intellectuality look as interesting as Musa's music.
Even her BF Timmy was such a expressive, smart and sensitive guy paired with rather rational and practical girl. That was so rare.

The color coding for characters could have been executed well IF: they weren't dressed like 30 year olds in 2010 and if the show was more connected to the source material in that it's a bright fantasy. If they wanted a dark show about fairies they should have dropped the aspects that ground it in being like a cartoon. If the goal was to balance cartoon and live action, they failed miserably.
I’m pretty sure the person who designed the outfits was used to designing clothes for thirty year olds and up. The costume designer made clothes for the Desperate Housewives show. Why did Netflix choose her? I completely agree with all of your points. Before this god awful show came out, Winx brought back a sense of nostalgia. Now when I think of Winx, I also think about this cringe show.
If they wanted a dark show about fairies, why not just adapt w.i.t.c.h. That had a lot of dark themes and literally dark colors. Or make something new (I know, I know, money.)
The worst thing is is that the characters are already color coded by their costumes. But i guess it doesnt 'fit' the powers or smth.

Like the actual winx cartoon dealt with some 'darker themes' like an arranged marriage and literal genocide but no that clearly isn't what they meant by darker themes. Like all of the relationships in the cartoon were really well developed with little jelousy between the girls but no they had to have a jelousy plot or else it's not 'dark and gritty'. This tv show was a fundamental part of my growing up and i am just p*ssed off that they ruined it

when the original casting came out the actress playing Terra was listed as playing Flora, which was eventually changed (in my opinion because of white washing accusations). but like, even though it's technically a "new character," we all know it was supposed to be Flora and they changed it to save their asses tbh. I feel like Netflix wanted to cast a plus sized character and forgot that women can be plus sized and POC.
I agree. Also I think the statement "It's Not Whitewashing" because they're technically different characters (retroactively, though originally she WAS cast as Flora) is not accurate. Maybe the character is not "teeeeeeechnically" whitewashed since she is a different character, but the show ITSELF is whitewashed. They did not change the entire cast of characters and keep it diverse, they removed one of the three POC, made the other white, and left one. The rest of the characters (the white ones) were left untouched. That IS whitewashing, and arguing semantics (wrongly) is missing the point.
Love you Amanda, but you're not quite on the mark here IMO.
Also to your point- I totally agree that they neglected the fact that you can have a POC who is also plus sized, but they also forgot that you can have a POC AND a plus sized person. There's no "limit" on how many "diverse" characters you can have!!

I 100% agree with you in this one. The character IS whitewashed, no matter how much they try to hide it now. And I don't see how people still get fooled by the fact that they just changed her name last minute and made her "a cousin" of Flora's, because, if it were true that they were cousins, and then Flora shows up in a later season to be Hispanic or Latina, how does that even work? Are they distant cousins? Adoptive? Like how can you be close family (literally your parents are siblings) and both be a different race altogether? I would get it if Terra was mixed race, but she's full white. No way she has a Latina cousin. Smh.
The poisoning Sky scene was also funny because he opened a water bottle, took the tiniest itty bitty fake sip, then immediately closed it and put it aside again. Like… were you even thirsty? And then THAT was strong enough to knock him out within a minute? But not enough to affect Bloom who put her mouth on his right after?

Also, Terra talks about how it's her first year as a student after growing up in the school. Plus, I can't remember the episode but I'm 99% certain someone comments on why Stella, a second year, was rooming with 1st years.

Actually they did originally white wash Flora. In the original scripts and casting calls Tera was Flora. They rewrote her to be Tera when they realized people would be p*ssed that Flora was now white.

My thing is like... in the original Winx Club, the girls were in college. Like, they were older than most other tween-girl-show protagonists. They'd go out on the town, have parties, and all that stuff (obviously a PG-rated version of all that, but the point still stands). And I love that! There was drama in the show, sure, but the main characters didn't hate each other unnecessarily or cause drama just because. They didn't totally get along at first, but they quickly learned to care about each other and get along. And that's what college is like!!! You grow out of all that petty high school drama. You learn to look beyond that kind of stuff and just. You get along with everyone unless you have a real reason not to. And I absolutely hate that they changed that about the show.

The school in the Winx club cartoon is called a college, but the students there are usually between 16-18. They're all teenagers that are basically still in highschool, and from what I remember of the show their behavior matches that. They don't hate each other, but there was a level of jealousy, they would sneak out at night to hang with boys, and worry about which boy would ask them to the dance.
Also the show was rated Y7 so the partying and stuff was even more tame than PG.

Semilocon The girls weren’t even color coded in the original show. Their casual outfits were mixes of different colors. Their transformation outfits were color coded, but only the basic transformation and not Enchantix or Believix.

Cuz it seems like all they did was go "Bloom=Fire, Fire is red, let's dress Bloom in red" for all the characters. This was lazy and awful costume designing, and that's speaking from who has never studied it.

@@iwakeupandboomimarat The costume designer for the show was Catherine Adair, who primarily worked on shows and films about middle aged women and adults (most notably, the desperate housewives). she probably has a lot more experience dressing skinny women as well. i really think they should have gotten somebody else to be in charge of costume design because while she's talented, her skills don't really translate well into dressing teenagers in a show that's supposed to be inspired by a cartoon. and especially with Terra, there were definitely ways to have her character stand out and by stylish while also wearing green.

Having Terra replace Flora as a main character is still an excuse to whitewash. 1, The actress playing Terra was originally announced to be Flora early on, but was then changed to Terra to avoid whitewashing complaints. 2, having her be literally the same character as flora, same personality and everything, is literally just making a white version of a character. 3, if they REALLY wanted to make Terra Flora’s cousin, they still could’ve cast a Latina actress to play her! They could’ve made Flora’s cousin also Latina but they didn’t, because Terra was written in as a way to get away with whitewashing.

It does make sense that she could be white but it should be shown she's mixed heritage by introducing Flora. I'm mixed (mexican/american) and while I look much darker, similar to my mother, my sibling is white passing. They look just like my dad but paler. Whenever they would mention that they were mexican/american, people didn't believe them and bullied them for it too (some even made rumors that my mom kidnapped them). It would be interesting to see that sort of stigma against mixed families brought up.

I think the funny thing is that in the original Aisha/ Layla was introduced in the second season as the mysterious character. The whole thing about her powers weakening in the original had to do with the villain draining her magic at one point

Why do the actresses look like they are mid forties. I get that you don't actually cast teens to play teens most of the time because of labour laws but the styling and lighting really doesn't help.
Hey! If Derry Girls (great show) could cast 30 year olds that could somewhat pass for late high schoolers, these shows definitely can. And like it’s less the actual age they look and more how they write and style the characters. The youngest is actually 19, so technically a teenager, but the "teenage" cast is otherwise in their 20's, and my god, some actually look so young that it's easy to think they cast people younger than their characters. The girl who plays Daniel's daughter doesn't look old enough to drive, yet she's 17 or so in the show.
Just proof that you can find adults who look young enough to play teenagers convincingly.

The cartoon was way more diverse and actually took risk in story telling, it was so bold and as I kid I loved their friendship and watch them go through struggles together. This live action just felt like a slap of reality that Hollywood don't care they just want money out of us, The show is one big ass clickbait.

What we got: Broken mean girl, edgy and BS lead character, main characters turned to background characters(Musa and Aisha), and dead people that keep coming back to life.

One aspect I always found interesting about the original Winx Club friendships was how the girls had even stronger bonds through their powers too. Yeah, they were all roomies and got into hijinks together and supported each other but I could see links that made sense. Stella and Bloom, light and fire, being besties makes sense especially with their first meeting being Bloom saving Stella. Techna and Musa being close too. Even Aisha/Layla and Flora being close in later seasons made sense (water and plants). It's those little things that made the show interesting for me even it was just a subconscious reach on my part! Plus the colors! The fashion! THE FASHION! It's sad... Thanks for this summary because phew now I really don't even have to hate watch it lol
What bothers me the most is the people who praise that live action trash. I grew up with and watched every single version of winx. So it’s really painful seeing such an awful remake be number #1 Netflix. I can’t help but be angry every time I hear about fate.

Winx Club used to be my shit when I was younger and had a big impact on my childhood and pre-teen/early teen years, since it inspired me to become more creative with my drawing, writing fanfiction and imaginary Winx OC characters. Overall, I consider it to be my favorite childhood show alongside W.I.T.C.H. and Digimon.
So, when I saw that Netflix was turning it into a live-action show, I didn't have the biggest of hopes for it and actually thought they might put in some effort into in. But guess what, this show is an absolute dumpster fire trash and it can't be compared to the original animated show. Even though I didn't watch it, it looked absolutely horrible in the trailer.
And for the lack of diversity between the casting choices, I totally agree! At least in the original version they attempted to have three inclusive characters within the six fairies (Musa, Layla and Flora), but here, they wiped their asses with an attempt at having inclusive characters.
Whitewashing Flora and turning her into a dollar-store version of her own self? Come on!!
Overall, this show is a waste of everyone's time and brain cells. It sucks!

@@pinkkam watch like the first 3 or 4 episodes and it is passable. I lost interest once Kirito suddenly changed his mind and completely contradicted what he believed at the beginning of the series. Also the main plot is almost identical to .hack//sign except it effects all characters instead of only one.
In the original files, she was called Flora. They just backpedaled. They somehow didn't think to just have a plus sized latina character, and retconned "oh, they're separate! See??"

I feel like the original cartoon Aisha wanted nothing to do with control. I remember them showing her constantly being controlled and told what to do as a kid, and then she made a friend who taught her how to let go and have fun. So it feels weird the remake would just change her whole character like that and make her obsessed with control and discipline. Guess that shows how much the netflix writers knew about the show.
The way the show made make a freaking Fairy School look like any other human high school... I was like... what? Lol. I didn't want to stay there more than a minute. And I'm surprised you didn't mention Riven and his "jokes".

The only thing I'd go "to be fair" about is that in the beginning they made an offhand comment about transformation not being around for a long time, thus why the wings were not around, which honestly just makes this more fanfictiony
when i heard that i was like ok that makes sense they wanna make it more realistic. If that was they only thing they changed i would be fine with it but they changed so much.

Well, the main reason they said transformation magic and wings had been gone for a while was to simply cut costs on animation. Even then I found Bloom’s wings so ugly and was utterly disappointed their clothes didn’t even change into something even remotely like the outfits from the original. I don’t think they could even fly, so what’s the point of giving them transformations if all it is just ugly wings that can’t fly?
I knew it was going to be bad without even watching it tbh. I loved Winx as a kid and w.i.t.c.h and all that stuff. Please leave those shows alone!! Stop trying to make them for adults

I *HATE* that every teen-young adult show nowadays always has to be “edgy and dark” and involve sex, drugs, and murder, etc. Some shows do suit that kind of style and do it well (euphoria) but now it’s like every show has that kind of vibe.
The colors of this show just make me sad. I just want a live action show full of peppy colors and pink and sparkles. Let me escape reality✨✨✨
The fairies and princesses ( and even the villains, but in darker colors)in once upon a time had glittery and sparkly outfits and that show had some pretty dark moments too.

The "changeling" part was taken from Celtic mythology! If you look more into that side of it, then you'll get what the big deal is. Actually pretty cool that they included that, but seems like they did a poor job of explaining it.
I think the bigger issue was that, correct me if I’m wrong, the original says nothing about ‘changelings’

I noticed this in the first moment, however blooms reaction didn't make sense to me, like fairies who did that were bad, so why would you want to meet them?
The problem is...if bloom is a changeling, then the fairies kidnapped her parents'¥ real baby daughter and most likely killed her. Which probably is going to be used to make the relationship between bloom and her parents worse.

I dont like that they filmed it in Ireland but mainly used British actors in the series when there originally werent really any British characters

I understood the Aisha deal as not her suddenly losing control but rather struggling with this one task (and having overcome a lot of struggles in the past, being in control and working hard), while Bloom just gets it with a tiny bit of struggle at first. I thought it was a suprsingly self aware look at 'the chosen one' getting it all with litte effort and Aisha was reasonably frustrated

I watched it in a day and I don't even know why. I guess I just needed a distraction and that seemed bad enough to not get fully obsessed over. The most annoying part was that it had such a nice concept but they ruined it all with laziness. Just like in the Vampire Diaries where Elena always had to be the most important one, even when her best friends suffered because of this, in this show it was the same with Bloom. What I found utterly ridiculous was when all the girls except for Aisha decided to help her free Beatrix, the confirmed murderer, and then Aisha was forced to apologize for being a snitch, even though she directly said that Bloom's actions were selfish and endangering. I was like... WHAT?!

Brian Young was the producer for VPD so I had a feeling that since he was also the producer for Fate that Bloom was going to be an Elena character.
I am so happy that you brought up the fact that the girls were barely friends. I feel like they had less than 10 different scenes with all of them together. Also the show used phones way too much and the fashion made them look a lot older than 16.

Did anyone else notice that literally nobody ever makes any mention of it - including Bloom’s parents when she tells them? Like Bloom is so self-obsessed she never stops to think about what this revelation might mean for her parents, and the show runners are so obsessed with Bloom that they don’t care enough to draw the attention away from her for even a second to think about her parents as people. They literally only see other characters as instruments or objects to advance the plot around Bloom, not as fully developed characters in their own right
