Charleston: The Ultimate Local's Guide || Gatekeepers
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- “Gatekeepers” is back for another season, this time with private chef Ashley Jonique hitting the road looking experience the country from a local’s perspective. First stop: Charleston, South Carolina, where local food writer Jen Choi, is on a mission to show Ashley there’s more to her city than walking tours and Bachelorette parties. With some help from her friends, local-musician Brian Wheat, writer K.J. Kearney, and bartender Caroline Woodruff, Jen is taking Ashley to the best places to eat, drink, and visit on your next trip to Charleston.
In every city, there’s someone who’s connected, who knows where to go on a slow Monday night and can get a table anywhere they want on a Friday -- in every city, there’s a Gatekeeper. In this Thrillist travel show, we’re sending our host across the country to meet up with these Gatekeepers and experience first-hand everything you should make sure to do/eat/drink, one city at a time.

Ashley sounds like she is straight out of North Charleston
No she's sounds exactly where she's from New Orleans. Whoa! That New Orleans accent of hers is strong.
Woulda liked to see more black Charleston/Gullah Geechee culture.

Gullah Geechee? What's that?
Jen Choi.. We're gonna find out...
Translation: SHE DOESN'T KNOW!!! A Chinese introducing someone to Geechee culture.. How? Lol
LMMFAOOO
Something about a woman from new orleans and their accent
Next time you come to Charleston you got to get with the real Gullah Geechie people show we can sho u wa e goin fo.... No knock to Ashley tho.
Lol. will do. Im just happy to know they exist there and their culture is something to know about. Thank you!! Def intrigued by the culture
KJ is the truth.
Where do we go?
Gareed you talk like me. Lol
Welcome to my city babes
You have to come back to Charleston just for the Gullah Geechee Food and Culture. Your life will be forever changed!
I know right! How did she come here and ain had no red rice, seafood salad, baked macaroni and cheese, greens, hoppin john, no crab and rice, or bbq?
Ravenel Seafood
Being born raised and currently living in Charleston I'm disappointed I would love for you to see more of the Gullah Geechee culture because it's so very important here
💯
Very! Most people living here and opening restaurants are not native born. Our foods are fresh, creative, and delicious. It seems like my man was cut short because he started mentioning slavery.
Right! Its more too it then what is mentioned.
@Gary Mcguckin everybody and their momma has moved to Charleston,SC from different states and swear they know move than the people who live here. I'm some cases it's TRUE.
@@georgeannacurry6229 show me. I moved here from DC.
It aggravates the heck out of me to see these culinary episodes that come to Charleston. I love Ashley. But her tour guide was some lady from God knows where. KJ should’ve been her tour guide! And she should’ve gotten a real view of our city. Built by black people... we are a hell of a lot more than wack bachelorette parties. We could’ve showed her an even better time Charleston needs a do over. With real Charleston culture and flavor.
Why am I just finding out about this? I’m a new Ashley fan, culinary black girl magic ( and she’s chocolate too!)
🙌🏾💁🏽♀️🍫⚜️🤣😘😘
Yes Loving her energy !! Wanna see more of her 💕🤙
Yes, she's beautiful and funny. The type of chick that I can hang out with. This is my first time seeing her also.
Ikr! Ashley's amazing!
MY CITY 💪🏽❤️ RIP CHARLESTON 9 🙏🏽
Damn. After killing it last year as a gatekeeper for New Orleans, Ashley straight up snatched Justin's job. Cold. 😂
Nothing but love here for both 🙌
Thats what happens when you're physicl2aly incapable of putting out.
Justin was cool. ppl gave him a hard time but he was himself. I had a blast both seasons. thank you tho!!
@Ashley Jonique I took a jab at Justin on the NOLA episode only because you were so funny but I gave him props the entire season. He seemed like a good dude. Can't wait to see your next trip. 👍
lol. its all good. yea Justin was cool
*Ashley has a great accent and super sexy!* when i seen her episode on gatekeepers i was like she needs to be a regular and now she hosting, thats awesome!
thank you!! they read these comments. Im happy to be here... sexy and all 💁🏽♀️🤣🙏🏾
I live in Charleston and nana's is my favorite seafood place! Forget all those over priced seafood restaurants on king and broad street
Ashley come back to Charleston and look me up real gullah geechie culture west Ashley, Hollywood, John's and james island, North Charleston, downtown and so much more my city has been gentrified badly but it's still people you can go and get the real story told if you want real culture tourist locations is what they show but learning real history of it all is behind the scenes but excellent job keep up the good work I just subscribed
Born and raised from Charleston🌴🌙 love my city❤️
Anthony Bourdain's Part's Unknown was wayyy more authentic to Charleston than this.
My home! Welcome to Charleston 💙🌴 gotta come to Isle of Palms beach (IOP) next time!
Gullah/Geechee and Louisiana Creole culture has some similarities. Btw I’m creole and from Louisiana. Ashley I want to go Charleston next year and I herd Savannah, Georgia is another city reminds New Orleanians of home too.
Yes Savannah is beautiful! It reminds me of New Orleans and Charleston. All have so much culture!!!!
Charleston and Savannah are "Sister Cities".
I live in Savannah Georgia and it is beautiful out here. the food is good and the people are nice
Not only the city of charleston is simular, the accent is pretty close to. Like New Orleans say right ye, and we we say right yu, wich means right here.
@@walkbreal exactly. Very similar in culture and dialect.

I swear the accent alone is why I married my husband, there is nothing more sexier than a New Orleans accent!!! 😍😝

I didn't like the presentation. Ashley didn't explore anything authentically Charleston, except for Nana's, when our city is rich in soooo much culture
You should of got Britt Britt garlic crabs

If your from Charleston I’m sure you made she choose the wrong MF to your her around. She needs to meet a real geechie person
No disrespect, but Ashley can't tell you nothing about the Geechie.... I need to become a tour guide.

I'd love to see yall come to downtown summerville, see the farms out here, and the restaurants! Downtown Charleston is know for it's amazing history, tours, hospitality, FOOD, and relaxing culture. I'm so glad you got to experience the heart of the Carolinas!
Great work from Ashley (and great work from Justin last season!)
thank you. we both had a great time hosting.
I hope when you were in Summerville, you got to try some sweet tea.
This isn't Charleston culture this is gentrified Charleston. Let me be your tour guide 🐐
Charleston look way different now all they doing is building resturants and hotels... shit everything as we know it bout to be gone... they pushing us out smh you are sooo right this wasn't the charleston culture

Yes, she need to go to the real spots in Charleston. Alot of people try to exploit Charleston sc like they know, but most of the restuarant stealing from the local people from Charleston. Nothing against the asian guide but she don't know reak geechee food.
Ashley was awesome! I can’t wait to see the next episode!!

Thank you Ma 😘
It breaks my heart knowing that there are so many of my people who don't know who the gullah geechee are. Their history is soO important to black culture in the south. I wish schools would teach us better. We have to teach our children about the african american cultures in the U.S. or this info will get lost.
the 8 4 3 💪🏾 nothing better
Ashley beautiful bronze woman love her energy and spirit
thank you!! I appreciate it!
I thought this was great! It would be really neat to have each of the Gatekeepers from the original season be a traveler this season.
That's a whole network worth of idea.
Makes me want to visit Charleston.. 😋🥰🥰
its beautiful out there. you def should
You might need to tap that 401k momma before coming, it’s mad expensive to do the tourist thing. I live here, and don’t do half of this shit cause it’s so overpriced.
You will love it! We go eveey chance we get.
@Moniqua Johnson dont u be on Paris channel
I went to Chubby Fish because of this video. Let me tell you the part where she said she wanted to cry after trying her plate was my reaction after trying their Bone Marrow with Shrimp Tempura. Blown away.
Also, Hannibal's Kitchen is a must! Great Gullah food!
I'm from Charleston, SC, and when she said New Orleans little brother, a quick 'eff you came out!! Man, we play second fiddle to nobody!! I stopped watching it after that!!! Humble yourself when you come to the 843 Lowcountry, folks!!!

Thinking about moving to Charleston, SC from ATlanta, GA. What's everyone thoughts? I do like Atl because of the many things to do. Museumes, Garden, mountains, sports, culture diversity restaurants (asian, hispanic, etc..)
Kind of the same but a lil smaller out here
Depends Charleston is gentrifying so quick and they’re making everything cookie cutter at this point. Still has lots of culture but it’s becoming extremely expensive. Atlanta is actually cheaper.
wow...great looking seafood plate....I enjoyed watching
RIGHT? I'm so hungry...
