Knowing how to remove your old battery is also key. Proper battery removal ensures your safety and keeps your vehicle’s electrical systems intact. You should always remove the NEGATIVE terminal cable first. Then after unhooking the negative terminal and setting it aside, disconnect the positive terminal. Why is this so important? Think of it this way: Your vehicle’s electrical system is a closed circuit. The negative terminal’s cable connects to your vehicle’s frame, which is part of the circuit, but its current flows from your car’s frame and components. Positive current, on the other hand, flows into the circuit from your battery. If you disconnect the positive cable first, there’s always a chance that you may accidentally touch it to other metal pieces. This completes the circuit and can cause a short in your car’s electrical system. Even if your old battery has just a small amount of juice, you could blow fuses or generate sparks that ignite and explode your battery. Any of these can result in serious injuries. Once you’ve disconnected the battery cables, pull off the cover and you’re still not quite done. You must also disconnect the brackets holding your battery in place. In most cases, you just need to unbolt them. Next, lift the battery carefully out of your vehicle and set it aside. This is a good time to do some cleaning in the battery tray to remove any leaf’s and dirt.
Most batteries’ lifespans range between two and five years, but that can vary with each driver’s habits. Before you’re left dead in the water, it’s a good idea to monitor your battery’s health. Many auto parts retailers offer free battery testing. When you’re shopping for your replacement, I put a free link in the description you can use free VIN www.autozone.com/vin-decoder to lookup from AutoZone to find models that fit your vehicle by its exact make, model and year.
Place the new battery in the tray, facing the terminals toward the windshield like the old one. Before I reinstall the terminals, I spray anticorrosive on the battery and cable terminals, one of these cans will last you forever! Now put the cover back on. When re-hooking the battery terminals, it’s positive first and then negative. Tighten each 10mm nuts on each terminal. And don’t forget to reconnect the bracket holding your battery in place. Next thing is to start it up and see if anything needs to be reset. You have now completed this job and hopefully this video helped you along the way.

Chevy engineers are imbeciles
Great video. Are there any tricks or methods for removing the negative terminal when it is extremely corroded?
@@simonkeane5053 If the terminal is hard to take off you'll need to get a battery terminal puller. there's a link in the description of this video you can click on or pick it up at any auto parts store. Wear gloves and eye protection when doing this.... Let me know if you have any questions..
Best of the 4 videos I watched on this swap. Good job, wife is happy.
@@davewalker3561 A Happy Wife is a Happy House! Thanks for the feedback and glad it helped.
It's two years later and your video is still helping people!
Thank you. Glad its helping.
My local auto parts store wouldn’t change mine out as they advertised. The employee said ‘oh no. This is one of those complicated ones.’ And went back inside. 😂. I’m a 47 year old nurse. You made it seem easy. Thank you for the help.
Too funny 😂. Glad it helped.
My daughter just called and said she needed a battery. Im 4hrs away so I told her to go to Oreillys or Autozone. They wouldn't touch it. She went elsewhere to get it done, but if she hadn't found someone, I was going to send her this video. She's a nurse too, BTW.
Did you change out the battery yourself Amanda?
They aren't allowed to because if you short the ecu or fuse block on the top of the battery. It's expensive and a dealer only part and causes a lot of headache.
LMAO 😂😂
2024 and still the best! Thanks very professional!
Thank you for the nice feedback.
Thanks so much. When I popped the hood on my daughter's equinox, it looked like a nightmare to replace the battery. Your video explaned everything so clearly. Chevy sure decided to make things difficult on this setup. You helped.
Glad it helped
Great video
I'm 52 years old and this is probably the best how-to video I've ever watched. The sound was good.... excellent videography. You didn't go too fast, you didn't go too slow. Thank you very very much! 2010 Chevy Equinox LTZ
Thank you very much Dave. It’s useful to hear this type of feedback and I wouldn’t mind criticism when it’s justified. That’s how we learn. thanks again.
20 minutes from start to finish! Couldn’t have done it without you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Great job! Glad it helped!
Thank you so much for this video! I am a military wife and was overwhelmed with the thought of changing my battery without my husband's assistance (he is away). The directions were so clear, I was able to get it out by myself. Thank you again!!
Glad it was helpful.👍
thank you so much I have a 2017 and I just had O'Reilly's Auto Parts change mine out and we had to use this video as a guide since it was complicated
Thank you very much for the feedback. Glad it helped!
They sure hid the battery on that model! Great how-to John on the steps to access the battery! Have a great week! 👍
Yes they do 😅 Thanks for the visit and comment. 👍
Thanks I got a call from my mechanic that it needed to be replaced. I didn't even know it had a battery!
I’m pretty insecure with car stuff but you made this so easy for me. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thank you for the comment.
This video was awesome! I'm not fluent in DIY car repair but consider myself semi-conversant and this was perfect step by step. Watched the whole thing 1 time and then restarted as I was completing the install and paused after each step to complete the task and came back and pressed play.
Didn't go too fast or skip any seemingly insignificant steps. I knew exactly what to expect with each step.
A must follow.
Glad it helped! Thank you very much for the feedback.
This video did help me. I did get intimidated by the connections. I thought I would need two battery’s “faceplam” once I saw that you remove the top part and it was separate I felt dumb 😅 but I’m glad I was able to change the battery. Thank you 🙏
Glad it Helped! Thank you for the feedback.
You are a blessing! Thank you so much! I went to autozone in Houston and the guy who was to test my battery didn't even know where the battery was.. I thought I was in real trouble! Lol thanks for your expertise
You are very welcome, glad it helped.
Thank you for this video. Our Equinox wouldn't start with the low temperatures and this was super helpful to locate the battery.
Glad it helped
Perfect video, thank you so much. Had to deal with this on my wife’s 2010 Equinox in below zero temps-your video really nailed the step by step to take the guess work out. I unfortunately broke the three plastic rivets trying to remove with a flat head screwdriver but those can be easily replaced.
One thing I encountered was a very corroded terminal to the negative post. Nothing I tried would release the terminal, including WD-40. I ended up buying a Battery Terminal Puller tool that solved my problem in about 10 seconds. Thought I’d share in case that saves anyone further headaches when you get to that step.
Lastly, shame on the Chevy engineers for creating such a difficult design to access what should be a simple fix. Totally ridiculous.
I agree with you on all points made!. Those rivets can be easily replaces and the puller is always handy. it usually happens when they overtight the terminal clamp and the the battery swells up on top. Goo you got it going. 👍 and thanks for the feedback.
I agree, shame on them for the unnecessary steps for something important & " easy to do"
There are other video guides for this process. This is the best one. Now…regarding the engineers at GM who designed this; all I can say is that we know why you made it difficult for the average car owner. And, secondly, I hope you are happy.
Cool, thanks
Thank you!!!! I would have never figured this out on my own
Glad it helped! . Thank you for the feedback.
Beautifully done sir, thank you! Now for me to go out and do this in 20° weather!
Yea! I don't miss those days.
Best video for battery replacement!! thank you very much.👍
Thank you for the feedback. Glad it helped.
Thank you so much for your video!!! You saved me a lot of money. Your video was very well done! My daughter took hers in and they charged her over 400 dollars for the battery and install. Took them an hour! I will definitely use your videos and share with friends!
Glad it helped! Thank you very much for the feedback.
After watching this video I was able to change out a battery in a 2016 Equinox with no problems. I am fairly handy but when I first saw all the crap Chevy has attached to the top of the battery I almost told my daughter to take it to a shop. Excellent video.
Glad it helped and thanks for the feedback.
Would have eventually figured this out, but this video made things a lot faster. Thanks!
Glad it helped!
Thank you!!! You are a Great American!
thanks! Glad it helped!
THANK YOU for this video. I was able to save a lot of money not taking it to the shop and I feel more confident about attempting future repairs on my equinox.
Excellent! Glad it helped. Thank you very much for the positive feedback.
Awesome video! Perfectly explained the process from start to finish. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Nice got this done on my wife’s car and only expense was the battery and just an hour and half of my time going to the store and back. Thanks man hope to see more of your videos. Cheers 🍻
Glad it helped
Just bought one of these and forgot to look this up earlier. Was relieved is fairly straightforward. Just it's replacing an Uplander which was a bit more complicated and we also have a Dodge Journey which a sadist designed the battery access on.
Thank you. Great video.
Glad it helped! Thank you for the feedback.
Other than my negative terminal being corroded in place and taking some extra force, everything went smoothly thanks entirely to this video. Thank you very much.
Glad it helped. Thanks for the feedback.
Great video John. Being handy and DIY can save money. It can also be a big challenge to replace parts. Have a nice day.
Very true. Often times it takes longer to find parts than to do the job.
Thank you, sir. This was golden. Got my battery changed in less than 30 minutes!
Glad it helped👍
Thanks for sharing.. I remember things being a lot more simplified when it came to getting to your batteries lol.. Full View and Like.. Hope you have a good week..
I agree, Thanks for watching
Thanks so much for this video. Before seeing this I was ready to put this thing in the shop just for battery change. Thanks to this video I looked like to my wife and son. 🤝
Great to hear! 😎👍
Thank you so much, this video was great! To the point and easy to follow ❤️
Glad it was helpful!
This was perfect helped in 2023 and to clean the battery literally just boiled a small pot of hot water 2 cups and cleaned all the corrosion ride off in seconds. Didn’t have to do not grabbing your cleaning. Made my battery look brand new.
Excellent! Glad it helped
Thanks! I am sure this video saved me some frustration.

Really impressive dear. Thanks to you.
Thanks to you👌
Thank you for posting this I was able to remove the cover and silly screw and metal thing that allows access to battery for a jump!
Next time use the red terminal and the screw next to it to Jump or charge. Its located on the fuse box next to the battery. You do not need to take the computer off to get to the battery. I need to do a video and add it to the Equinox playlist.
@@JohnCRV Not sure what you mean but good to know. Seems there should be something easier than what I had to do to get to the battery!
@@susanreed1569 Planning on doing a video soon. Its very simple.
Here's the video to jumpstart it without using the battery terminals. Hopefully you wont need it but its good to know this.
