Fabiano and Cristian sit down to go over the games that changed history. The Sinquefield Cup 2014 was the highest rated event ever, with a FIDE average rating of 2802. Fabiano started with an incredible 7-0 streak, a score that hasn't been replicated since in modern elite level tournaments. Here is how it all went down!

I love the use of a real chess board. This video is top-notch diamond studded content. And to cover Fabi’s historic tournament in such detail is just a tremendous gift to the chess community. The best tournament performance in history. Must be a nice feather to have in your cap.
This is arguably the greatest tournament victory in Chess history. Some others that come to mind are Fischer 1972 Candidates tournament, and Karpov at Linares in 1994.
Yeah, those are the 2 I thought of that could be in the same conversation, but I would rate Fabi's perfirmance first out of those
@@joshpointohFischer's undefeated streak is wayyy better, you went too far son.
I assume you meant Fischer 1971 Candidates Matches? Plus perhaps 1970 Interzonal.
Gukeshs streak in the Olympiad would be top 5
@@mustaphad1319Absolutely not. You must have been born in 2010, you discount all of chess history, just pure nonsense. Olympiad is not a strong tournament like elite round robins. Olympiad is not even close. And Gukesh badly blundered to Abdusattorov in the final game
One of the most legendary performances in sports history
Its like pitching a perfect game and a no-hitter back to back. Truly remarkable.
@@davidcomeau6308nope, you went too far son. Learn baseball.
Yes
I downvoted this then started the podcast and he listed then names of the other people in the tournament 😮
@@tomgriffiths6558 Tom, you are correct, the average rating of the players in 2014 Sinqufield Cup is the highest avg. rating in the history of chess tournaments ever.
Fabiano analyzing this game with shock like "omg this Fabiano guy in 2014 was really good, I love his subtle and precise moves"
"The older I get, the better I was" :DDDDD
I love Fabiano's subtle hint at 1:52 when addressing certain colleagues who believed he was cheating in the 2014 Sinquefield Cup. "I'm not sure if their opinion was modified, later on . . ." Yeah, modified after Fabi won the 2018 Candidates Tournament, drew Magnus 12 times in a World Championship match, and became the 3rd highest rated chess player in history. That might have something to do with a change of opinion. 🤣
I have a feeling Hans will not have the same validation of strength. Hans already dropped 50 rating points and is mired at 2650 for the foreseeable future. Hans went from 2480 to 2700 twice as fast as Firouzja and three times faster than Magnus. Hans cheated.
@@hosiahjonesI agree with you fully, and that Fabi's incredible streak was 100% legit.
Fabiano is the player because of whom I started following chess more regularly. In the post Vishy-Kramnik era, Fabi felt like the best competitor to Carlsen.
Yeah, he's the only one who's ever been close since the Magnus era started. And I also must say I like his personality the best out of the top guys. He's confident but not cocky, respectful but not submissive, and just seems to be a really good dude!
I mean, until this exact tournament, Levon felt like the closest competitor to Carlsen. Levon hit 2830 in 2012 which is insane.
@bobing1752 Yes, Levon was the second best player in the world for a long time. This tournament changed it all. I remember waking up early everyday to check updates on the UA-cam broadcast of this Sinquefield Cup edition. I had already heard of Fabi before, and I believe he was already a 2800+ player, but this tournament was a seismic shift.
@@bobing1752 Yea Levon is definitely the second closest, but he was never really that close. Hitting 2830 is obviously insane, but Carlsen was 2881 at that point. While Fabi was like 3 points behind Carlsen in 2018 and could literally have overtaken him on the rating list by winning one single game. Would have altered the course of history for sure!
@@noone-ld7pt true. My point wasn't that Levon was closer than Magnus than Fabi would ever be, it's just that in the context of this video, Fabi was not yet considered as the main competitor for Magnus because form 2010 to 2014 it was Levon.
I still remember this incredible result. Magnus was the only other player with a plus score and a distant, distant second, with a loss against only one player: Fabi
Fabi just casually remembering his moves from 2014 while I can't remember what pocket I put my phone in
Proud owner of one of the limited DGT enabled chess sets of this memorable event. Nice memories and an exceptionally beautiful chess set. This was one of the huge tournament victories of chess history.
This tournament is the reason why I am always rooting for Fabi even till this date. I was a budding chess player who just started following top level chess online (I was 11 that year; just finished my first world youth championship the year before). What Fabi did there completely blew my mind, it was astonishing how powerful his play was and how easily he demolished other top players, including Magnus.
How dare you release this while I'm trying to work.
That Fabi performance (and ofc Yasser & Maurice's commentary) is when I restarted playing chess after giving it up 20 years before when I was about 9 yo
That Fabinator 3098 is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are mated!
I've never seen such crystal clear explanation in a while. Good stuff Fab! (also not bad Chris)
Arguably your best podcast to date, great content thanks so much.
This was really fun to watch. It reminds me of why I love chess so much. Thank y'all!
I really like Fabi's style of explaining things - there is some special, gentle timbre of emotion in the voice. Also that kind of objectivity is compelling. Really enjoyed the show.
Feel blessed to hear you explain your games. An honor
Really like you guys using the chessboard and screen shot. Great idea.
Thank you!!!!! Historic 2014 Sinquefield Cup (coupled with the 2018 wcc match) cements Fabi as one of the Top 20 chess players of all time. PERIOD! ❤
Our pleasure!
One of the performances ever in chess. I remember following it live!
Hailstorm message from God: FABI HAS ARRIVED! ⚡⚡⚡
Excellent series.
Best thumbnail so far
I see the bicep& tricep gains fabi, keep up the great work. Christian been looking jacked as well!
I am only a new chess adaptor, but I now know of the two greatest moments in sporting history:
Fabi's 2014 Sinquefield Cup
Cristian's 2023 Ju-Jitsu Competition
Cristian cutting weight and Fabi cutting down his opponents.
Love your work lads, keep it up,
All the way from Australia!
The win against Aronian with the Ruy Lopez is one of my favorite games ever. Karpov-ian positional win
The win over Magnus slaps too, of course
The game against Levon is much more impressive to me - Magnus just played poorly in the game he lost, whereas Levon made a bunch of relatively minor inaccuracies and still got wiped off the board
So excited you guys did this...getting Fabi perspective here was truly fascinating.
I believe that, and everyone here should agree, Fabiano will become world champion. He is currently the people's champ. He's had an amazing year tickling that 2800 rating and staying around 30 rating points away from Magnus. This Sinquefield cup review going 7-0 should remind people on why. Mark my word, he will be champion. Great review and glad you guys are making this a series!
Finally, a nice chess set! Bravo!
The issue that I noticed with cheap induction stoves: they don't directly turn down the power, but always go full-power. If you turn it down to e.g. a 5 it will do a 10 second on, 10 second off.
Especially in a lighter pan the temperature will go up/down all the time.
For most stuff that you cook that doesn't really matter, but if you have a tortilla in for 15 seconds it can differ quite a bit how much heat the tortilla gets.
Great. This reminds me of the old Kasparov dvd where he covers some of his best games.
the idea of remembering your (Caruana and Chirilla) best (and worse?) results is really nice. More!
This is the reason why I became big fan of Fabi till today
I must admit, I only watch Chess since 2017, with Caruana as a Chess role model from the beginning. Therefore I got the joy to look watch the 2018 Candidates and World Champ live, but I only got to see the StLouis Games some years later. To be honest I still find it hard to believe, how it can be possible to get 7-0 against such strong opponents, when theory and everything was already so far, that you loose so much winning chances. Truly impressive, showing that Fabi is the third strongest Player in history for a reason. Looking at the games, its just inspiring to see that no matter how good your opponent is prepared, you can always play for a win.
Amazing run at the 2014 Sinquefield Cup!!
Beating Topalov, MVL, and Magnus to start the tournament with two out of three as black is absolutely phenomenal.
Fabi went from looking like a Computer Science major to looking like a tech CEO on his way to a workout. Man looks so classy.
Basically everyone wasn’t as cautious while playing him as they are now. They underestimated fabi & went for a kill got crushed.
This episode is awesome❤please upload part 2 soon
Love the real board and the real board cam
cant wait for the rest of the games
Spoiler alert.
Fabi won.
This is such a beautiful chess set. I am mesmerized.
i dont care about the best tournament performance or about aliens in hudf yd3. both beyond my horizont of imagination.
i care about the best streamer performance ever!
best topics, best quality, best insight in chess.
chapeau for fabiano and cristian. you are the brightest stars in my chess streamer universe
Question for Fabi, I think there would be manny others, interested as well: How much time do you plan, for people to learn the Archangel? Just a number of hours or days practicing would be amazing, as well as the question, if the top players are actually that fast in remembering opening lines, or if they just spend more time in practicing. Thanks in advance!
What board and pieces are those? Where can i buy? They look nice.
Love the otb analysis, it's obvious that fabi is a chess purist and i love that he brings that energy to these games
Suggestion for future content. Christian vs Fabi in a mini match (eg 4-6 games of 10+5 OTB or similar?). Then a deep analysis of the games between you guys. Showcasing the gaps in understanding of a 2530 GM and a top Super GM.
Could be a fun idea, although Christian is definitely gonna get cooked
What's the chess set used in this one? It looks absolutely beautiful
I'm curious who Fabi was referring to when he said some of his coleagues thought or think he cheated at that tournament... levon and maxime are good friends with him, magnus hikaru and topolov remain, speaking of minimum 2 means that one of magnus and hikaru is on the list
24:16 Maurice damn i miss that guy
When Fabiano goes into stockfish mode noone can beat him
Fabi understands chess better than anyone, his game against Magnus shows exactly that point. Fantastic analysis!
If he is the chess machine, Magnus is Terminator.
- "I'll be back"
Does anybody know the type of chess pieces they are using? I am looking to upgrade from my german Staunton
For some reason the ratings Cristian cites are all very inaccurate, e.g. Fabi was not 2823 and Magnus was not 2847. The ratings of the players were: Fabi 2801, Topalov 2772, MVL 2768, Magnus 2877 (!), Levon 2805, Hikaru 2787. It does somewhat throw cold water on the narrative build-up that Fabi and Magnus were "very very closely" rated. Great video though, fascinating to hear Fabi's explanation of the positions.
7:57 I wonder what happens if he takes with the pawn, since 2 moves later he plays g4 anyway.
Yet another excellent broadcast. Thank you guys
A good human bring excel at what he loves. Nothing but respect for Fabi and this amazing result. Godspeed Fabi!
ice bucket fabi , thank you guys for the footage
Note to the editor: Please show the variations being discussed. It's hard to follow without visuals even a few moves deep.
takes, takes, mate. Takes, takes, mate. Takes, takes, takes, takes, mate.
3 things in live, that practically impossible:
-The sun stops to shine
-Fabi loosing in Chess
-Fabi active on Discord
We miss you man!
Fabi is unironically goated with the sauce
Brilliant, insightful and entertaining.
Great revisit.
❤
7/7 speaks for itself. The true 🐐
That was the time I became a Fabi fan, and I have been one ever since!
For a beginner like me it's a bit difficult to understand all the analysis that Fabi is doing at the board, any way we can get a digital board for that also?
Don’t worry if you don’t understand it all yet. Fabi’s play in this tournament was the greatest chess playing by a human, ever. His game against Aronian is arguably the greatest chess game of all time. You could write a book on each of the 7 games in the tournament; that is how miraculously complex and beautiful they are
MACHINE 🐐🏆🔥🔥
Wonderful video! I wish you would pass on the digital board, though, and just show the actual board in close-up, like 7:57 (or better yet, show it from above).
Fabi the goat
A part of history surely🙏🙏🙏
What a thumbnail !
Bro Chrstain ur arms are massive holy moly.😂
Sooner or later you guys will nail the right lighting/angles for these sorts of videos (which are brilliant). Christian will get an uneven tan
C-Squared podcast!!! Lets go!! ❤🎉
Fabi just goes over every move I think look scary and just nope, love the video
Off topic question, is Fabi working hard bíceps aka gym?
i too noticed those arms getting bigger and wonder if he just added egg whites to his diet
Fabiano Caruana's winning streak at the Sinquefield Cup has me reevaluating my life choices. I mean, I can't even win an argument with my cat, and here he is dominating grandmasters like it's a casual Tuesday evening at the chess club. Maybe I should start practicing my moves with my morning coffee. Checkmate, world - or at least my coffee cup!
It's hard to follow when you explore lines but the physical board is not easy to see, and the computer board is not updated.
Nice Format
Fabi on her candidates were also nice
How can you like this twice
I know it is hard to win the book, but even if I don‘t win, I at least know that Fabi read them. Something, that is inspiring enough.
Incredible 🎉❤
I want a poster of The Chess Machine
The pieces look tasty and tempting 😂😂
Good job on the thumbnail!
Magnus: Hey! You cannot do that!
Fabi: Wrong
Bang!
If I have the choice between an autograph of Fabi and Christian, I would always take Christian, as you only have to travel to an Event in which Fabi plays, but its really hard to visit the tournaments in which Christian plays in.
A hailstorm during the first game, followed by a perfect performance? This would be a great setup for a deal-with-the-Devil story.
👑
Damn fabi is jacked
Our future world champion.
Whst watch is Christian wearing? It looks so good!
That set is purdy
That thumbnail is epic. Do you have a link to it somewhere?
Not even Hans and the beads could have beaten Fabi in this tournament
Go on Fabi
"Hasta la vista, Magnus." (Fabinator)
This was not the best performance in chess history. It was great, so don't get me wrong. But, there were a number of greater tournaments. One was Fischer's 11-0. Another was Zuckertort's 1888 London. There were others as well.
Great idea for a film boys
The game against Magnus was one for the memorable games collections. Amazing chess!
God damn fabi has some veiny arms
