  • New Orleans-born pianist Jon Batiste is about to drop his breakout album, Social Music, with his band Stay Human. Besides being a post-modern piano professor, Jon sings and plays melodica. Maybe you've seen him do that on the streets of New York, or in the HBO series Treme.

This man I can listen to him talk about music all day. What a lesson we just received about the melodica.

I produced this video in early spring 2014, prior to Batiste's appointment as music director for the Stephen Colbert show. Batiste was a joy to work with, as he is a joy to hear.

Howard Mandel great stuff! this, along with baptiste's performances, inspired me to get a melodica. is he using a mouthpiece in this?

You can attach a long tube, lay it flat and play with both hands like a reed organ too. Very versatile instrument.

Great video- Batiste seems to be a down to earth soul- refreshing to know musicians like that

What kind of sad, withered soul gives a thumbs down to this video? I guess I shouldn't trouble myself about such things--life is too short.

so wonderful, thank you, for explaining how to get those different sounds, harmonica/harp, gypsy Paris ( that's what I noticed first, like accordion), and the Sax, with the throat growl. Super! Merci!

I remember that instrument. It was called a hooter, once upon a time, and it was played by Rob Hyman of the Hooters, and thus the name Hooters stuck. Hooter is another name for melodica.

1:43 - Most Melodicas actually have both a shorter mouth piece like Baptiste is using here as well as a longer hose-type mouthpiece, so you can place the instrument on a surface and play it essentially like any other keyboard, with two hands. I just think it looks cooler with the shorter mouth piece myself, more unique i guess?

It's a lot brighter and more expressive with a short mouthpiece. Most experienced players don't use the hose.

Cool I’m a guitarist and I’ve just got that exact melodica but it’s a bit like a guitar in that you could play just melody , just chords or both but I use two hands with it on my lap ( not used to using my breath though ) can’t stop playing it 😅

+Francisco Rodriguez + aquawatercolor thanks for asking and answering. I just ordered a new Yamaha Pianica 37 from Amazon, which I think is just about the same or better (?), having started out as a teenager with the Hohner student, which as Batiste says, wasn't taken seriously for a long time, so, I am hoping to do "Summertime," Strawberry Hill," "Walkin' to New Orleans," and "when the Saints" on mine. thanks!

I play one in the church praise band. People will ask "what is that?" Need to upgrade to a larger one. I don't really care for the other name "air board"; sounds like a scooter or something.
