  • Lesson on Pheochromocytoma: Symptoms and Treatment. Pheochromocytoma is a medical condition caused by a catecholamine-secreting tumor formed by chromaffin cells within the adrenal medulla. This tumor secretes excessive amounts of catecholamines, leading to a variety of symptoms including hypertension, a pounding headache and tachycardia. Pheochromocytoma has a similar presentation to a paraganglioma, which originates from sympathetic nervous tissue as opposed to pheochromocytoma. However, both pheochromocytoma and paragangliomas are managed and treated similarly, so often are categorized together.
Pheochromocytoma is often idiopathic, but can be associated with a variety of genetic conditions including MEN2. Diagnosis of pheochromocytoma involves measuring catecholamine levels and catecholamine breakdown products known as metanephrines in the plasma and urine. When pheochromocytoma has been diagnosed, surgery is often required in order to resect the tumor; however, careful treatment and management is required prior to surgery for successful outcomes. My heart rate was pounding and I was at work and I didn't lift anything heavy. I started to feel very sick causing me to feel nauseous, vomiting and fast heart rate (Tachycardia) . My manager called paramedics and they said my heart rate was at 160 which was dangeroues. I go to ER then I tell them all my symtpoms. I get admitted to hospital and my blood pressure was quite high. I had the symptoms of "Pheochromocytoma" as I also had shaky hands, sweating, anxiety and my body would twitch and shake which is quite scary. In order to be diganosed I needed a CT scan and a PET scan and when I did both of those scans, it was confirmed I had it. My "Pheochromocytoma" has been in my body for 7 years. How did they know? in 2016, I had an ovarian cyst burst and my endocronlogist pulled up my past CT scan back in 2017 when I mentioned I have PCOS and he was able to see in the old CT scan that this tumor was there and it was never mentioned to me. I am on heart meds and BP meds and surgery will be soon!

I've been on Doxasosin 1mg and 100mg Metoprolol for 6 months. Been having heart rate and BP problems since 2019. Doctors "don't know why" or what is causing it, except for one. He suggested I may have Pheochromocytoma and reffered to Endocrinologist. Almost two years of suffering and only 1 out of the 22 doctors I have seen came up with a probable diagnosis. I have been through urine and blood tests and all cone back normal. These Pheochromocytomas can be tricky and have false positives on tests. I see the Specialist on May 6th....finally.

MRI is superior to cat scan in detecting a pheochromocytoma plus a cat scan exposes the patient to the radiation from approx. 300-400 chest X-Rays. So if your doctor/s prescribes a cat scan to rule in or out a pheochromocytoma, he/she either is not aware of these facts, ignores these facts , or has a financial interest in having patients utilize the cat scan in which cases, then find another doctor, (it's your body/your life), protect it.
In addition, only have an knowledgeable/experienced surgeon with a positive outcome history perform your adrenalectomy AND same goes for the anesthesiologist for the adrenalectomy (since this is an exceedingly delicate procedure for an anesthesiologist as well) at medical facility with a positive outcome history in this most delicate of operations in BOTH the open or laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
    Best of luck and health.

I’m 16 and have gone to the doctor many times with multiple urine tests and other c.a.t. scans and mri tests done. I have none of those symptoms of pheochromocytima but I’m just trying to rule this out hopefully. And I don’t know if thid had anything to do with it but I have gone through severe mental abuse and stress with having a parent abuse alcohol and see them wither from age 9-13(I was 13 when the symptoms started).

Splenectomy at age 12 following trauma.
Then I have have developed a lot of complex illnesses including CLL, CMV pericarditis, CMV hepatitis, diabetes, heart disease, Osteoporosis #T4, T7, T9 and AF. I have 2 x 2 stents and cardiac ablation last year that did not resolve AF. I discovered that I had a couple of left adrenal abnormalities and one has continued to grow fairly rapidly into a Pheochromocytoma. This explains treatment resistant AF and some other symptoms. PET scan 3 days ago has confirmed 5 cm tumour but no secondaries for the surgeon and I am just waiting for a date. Hopefully my health will improve after surgery and I can go on to lead a happy, health and productive retirement. I mention the splenectomy because i think it could be at the route of a lot of my illnesses. I have 8 medical professionals looking after me and I was a nurse in drug health and mental health for 43 years until I retired last year. Despite my stubborn determination I am still a bit afraid of the surgery as there are risks and I have some complexities to consider including insulin dependent diabetes, AF and a whole raft of medications to control hypertension and BSL. In the last month the tumor has given me increasing pain which keeps me awake sometimes. I take Targin sparingly. My cardiologist had a light bulb moment when he found out about the adrenal tumor and thinks that is the reason for treatment resistant AF and other symptoms such as intermittent episodes of confusion and headaches. I have pain under the lower left rib. Hopefully a couple of small fatty growths on the right adrenal don't turn sinister. I would love to retain one adrenal gland!

You need to see a type of M.D. specialist called an endocrinologist. An M.D. who specializes in this branch of medicine will be able to determine whether your problem is being caused by an “endocrine gland” (i.e., a hormone-producing organ) such as the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland, the pituitary gland, one of the adrenal glands, or yet another gland, or whether it is related to another organ dysfunction, such as a problem with the ovaries or kidneys. In the meantime, you are doing the right thing by educating yourself on medical topics and looking for answers everywhere you can. I wish you all the best - don’t lose hope, and keep being your own best medical advocate! People brave enough to do this always are best off in the end results!

Would this type of tumor cause extreme, unrelenting chronic pain in the area of the tumor? Temperature changes kill! I’m in agony 75% of the time. It radiates to my right ear and up the back of my head near the occipital region. I also have chronic tinnitus on this side.
My day is spent actively trying not to flare up the pain.
Doctors can’t find anything on scans. I have very high blood pressure. I’m 34. I’ve had this pain since I was about 23. I can feel something moving around in my neck when I palpate it.
The pain originates from a very specific spot. If I press on this spot, it feels like I’be been shot. It also is excruciating when I stop applying pressure to the area. The weather changes flare up this pain as well, specifically cold.
Also, I have a glomus tumor under one of my fingernails. So I know I have the genetic mutation for these types of tumors.
The one on my fingernail is EXCRUCIATING if I accidentally whack it on something or if it gets too cold.
Literally takes my breath away if I hit my finger on something in just the right spot. This is what my neck pain feels like… this exact type of pain, only in my neck. I’m desperate to find answers and get better.
I am so over being in pain all the time. I want my life back.

So I have high urinary metanephrines and my bp used to cross 200 at night during attacks that lasted few mins. But my CT Scan and MRI reports of whole abdomen came normal.I am just 23 now and it seems to be a borderline case? Maybe that's why the tumour isn't caught in imaging bcoz it's too small.

Let them operate! She has to get rid of that Tumor. Sometimes it spreads, but if you don't let them operate she may have a stroke! Sorry it took so long to reply
