What do you mean we don't heard about the anymore. Like tooster said, they've always been under the radar. They have their following and it's never been mainstream after "Pull Me Under". But in contrast, the past few years have been a highlight of their careers. Primarily, their Grammy nod has put them on the "mainstream map" than in previous years.
That by no mean makes them sell out either (just putting that out there before it thrown back at me), it just that they are making music that more people are enjoying whilst still sticking to their guns and making music that they want to make.
Besides the ace of Portnoy was always his tone... I only remember one drummer which had a kit with a sound as good as Portnoy's which is Jason Rullo, i really dig that "bassy" tone he gets from his drums.
Dream Theater after Portnoy has gone down I must admit.. Plus you don't really hear much about DT anymore which is a shame.. Mangini is a great drummer but people refuse to accept to Portnoy is done with DT and so they have moved on.. shame
Zoom in, zoom out, zoom in, zoom out. Made this unwatchable. Almost. Just find a nice spot and leave the zoom alone. And whats with the lighting effects? This is a drum performance not a concert. Just light the stage with white light and leave it alone. The strobes, flashing colors etc are taking away from the performance.
Technically mangini is clearly better than portnoy, but portnoy plays with more balls and emotion - I like that more. I don't know, it sounds like mangini have only a few levels of dynamic and just puzzle it together. just like a drumcomputer. ps: i wasn't the guy who disliked this video. :)
