- Actress KATE HEWLETT brought something magical to STARGATE ATLANTIS when her character Jeannie debuted in the third-season episode "McKay and Mrs. Miller." She played (Meredith) Rodney McKay's sister from Earth, herself a brilliant scientific mind who had chosen another path in life. But Jeannie was to be played, in fact, by actor David Hewlett's real-life sister.
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate," Kate tells the story of how her casting came to be. She also talks about working with David and with Amanda Tapping on the show ... and tells us a nice, embarrassing story about her brother.
This clip is from our full-length, 70-minute conversation with Kate. Watch the full interview here: • 051: Kate Hewlett, "Je...

THANK YOU for watching! "Dial the Gate" also recently caught up with Kate's brother, actor David Hewlett. Take a look at this really interesting exchange about the character of Rodney McKay: ua-cam.com/video/2fdQ9b6rLOA/v-deo.html
The "sister seed" was planted in episode "Hot zone" (S1E13) not in the "Letters from Pegasus" (S1E18).
When the exploration was exposed to the nanovirus and Rodney though he will die in moments, he says : "Listen ! I have a sister" around 26 minutes.
I think it's fascinating how easy that went. especially the technobabble-stuff too.
but I'd like to know, who came up with "meredith". because that would be something, writers wouldn't come up with. but a sibling who would like to tease a sibling has easy access to. and it felt quite natural.
One of the most believable sibling dynamics I've seen on tv, because it's real. Love it.
I found this out a few years ago and went "OOOHHHH that makes sense". The onscreen chemistry was incredible and thought they where actual siblings....uh because they where lol. Perfect.
@The Rogue Pirate Smithers 😂
I think one of her best lines in that first episode was I solved your problem using finger paints in my spare time
I love this line! And Kate's delivery makes it 100 times better. :)
I loved that episode !!!!
@@GateWorldDotNet ..and beaming being just as impossible as time travel then mckay and sam give snide glances. Priceless
The best line ever
i prefer.
Rodney: I dont want to scare you but were at war.
Jeanie:.......Did you start it?
Rodney: WHAT!? No!
Jeanie: Well.....
Rodney: Come ON!!
classic.
She was a perfect casting
She is his Sister...
@@skak3000And she played McKay's Sister perfectly.
Kate stole my heart when I first saw her in McKay and Mrs. Miller. They should have used her more in SG Atlantis or even in SG-1. Great interview!
I fell in love with Kate watching this episode. 💕
How the hell does she look Younger than when she was in Atlantis?! She's so nice and gorgeous!
Nah, she looks as little older. More mature. She's aging very gracefully though. For sure.
It gave rise to one of the funniest recurring jokes in the Stargate franchise.
Meredith.
If I ever meet David I'm gonna say "Hello Meredith" when I walk up.
The episodes with Jeannie are among my favorites. I love the character so much, and Kate is so sweet and lovely. Her smile gives me warm fuzzies.
She's still beautiful.
Kate is ageless, love to see an interview with both Kate and David Hewlett, great personalities.
She has aged very well, looks good.
She basically looks the same. Of course it's probably partly make-up.
@@pythonxz And partly Goa'uld
.
Her look when she saw an Asgard for the first time was perfect
I loved her, her involvement was such a breath of fresh air and charming I couldn’t stop smiling all the way through.
Loved her addition to the crew and story. She showed you can be a house mom and still be a badass. I like how Rodney called her "Out of the Game" but she one uped him in her sparetime LOL HAHAHAA
This is one thing I love about Stargate, it always had strong female characters. Carter is the perfect example of that, she's way smarter than everyone else at the SGC and she's a real badass when it comes to fighting. Weir is a strong and charismatic leader to Atlantis, as is Teyla to her people. Vala is... well she's Vala, had a tough life, went through a lot but shows great cunning and was an awesome addition to SG1. Most important is Stargate never felt the need to belittle or ridicule men to make women feel important, unlike many shows these days, both women and men stand on the same ground in Stargate, this is peak equality.
Yeah her astonishment on being beamedntonship.wasnreal and statement that beaming being just as impossible as time travel then mckay and sam give each other a snicker glance was realistically done
with finger paints! That's what made it even funnier
@Genaro Scala you're definitely on to something. Even in universe Weir was a disaster as a leader. She would have been better as the Daniel Jackson kind of position. Wraith. Asurans. Genaii. Michael. All under her watch. Carter was sent in to put out the fire.
That said I thougbt Weir/Shep could work if she hadn't been in command.
Weir was a crap character 🤮 The "Weir" in SG1 was better and prettier too 🤷🏻♂️
McKay and Mrs. Miller one of my top 5 episodes in all of Stargate.
That explains the perfect sibling connection! Love them.
The episode where she goes to Adlantis is still my favourite or the series. Such a great episode and she is a major reason why.
Loved their on-screen chemistry! Always wished we saw more of her in Atlantis.
Two of the episodes where Kate was on was my favorite..she has a beautiful smile
Love the Meredith moments hahaha.. such fun :-)
Excellent choice to act with one of my favorite Stargate characters "McKay".
Kate was awesome 👌
Oh and great interview too.
I love Kate, she is so cool headed and smart and regularly boxes "Merideth's" ears!!! To me she is mega Atlantis star in only the few episodes she did.
GREAT JOB ma'am!!! You made it even greater!!! I do enjoy Rodney's character as well, but you are the icing to the cake!!
Thanks for your time,
Vaelin
So glad she was able to play his on screen sis being real bro and sis totally comes out how they act on show
Her Episodes are my favorite episodes, ever!!!!
I knew even when I was a teenager, they had to be real life siblings. The chemistry was just like mine and my sister's. This just warms my heart
I always thought that was a good casting and I liked the actress, but it was several years before I realized that they were real life siblings. That explained a lot. Sometimes it feels like by Hollywood standards any two people with similar skin color can be siblings.
The actor who plays McGee on NCIS has a sister who plays well his sister too.
@@Mortlupo Just looked it up, and you're right, she's his stepsister. Any other siblings in real life and on screen I should know about?
@@limiv5272 Little house on the prairie... I think Laura's step brother played Willie or Albert.
@@KS-cl8br I never watched that show, but thanks
I literally just found out... with this interview.
Love kate's smile, perfect bone structure, so lovely. @Mr Read, thank you for all your work 250 episode of dial the gate.
Thats cool. You know there was just something that I couldn't put my finger on. The way the two characters interacted that brought the family vibe to the relationship. Now I know.
KATE HEWLETT - ❤❤❤❤❤❤😍😘
Actress Kate Hewlett was one bests Stargate Atlantis guest star.
That was great! Loved her in SG1! glad to see times been kind to her she looks great. Thanks for posting this.
I didn't know that they are real siblings. It now makes sense that the episode really felt like Rodney's sister came to his Job place.
Ah yes, the sister of Meredith Rodney McKay 🤣🤣🤣
She was awesome! I loved every episode she was in. I wish she would have been in more.
They are both hilarious! Wish they would star in a new sg series.
Now THAT is a spin-off I would love to see !
Stargate do pretty great spin-offs though 🤷♀️
She was VERY GOOD, loved her, the episodes where she is in are my favorites! Saw her on the thumbnail and i just hade to click
Just joining the chorus of "what the hell? how does Kate look better than she did 15 years ago?"
Loved her character and relationship in the series. Also the Dogs Breakfast role, watched that a half dozen times back then.
Great stuff.
She is much better looking than her brother 😁. A very beautiful woman
Her smiile is wonderful.
Those were great episodes they did together.
I’m rewatching the series. Rodney is my favourite character. I had no idea they were really siblings. The episodes with her are some of my favourite.
That episode is one of my all time favorites!
Two of my favourite episodes with the siblings batting off of each other, so good
It's all in my top episodes which were she appeared.
they were great together
She is still so ridiculously adorable.
Loved your character. Loved the show, have the box set.
The chemistry between the two of them was perfect - but how could it not be? Casting Kate as Rodney's sister was obvious, but in Hollywood sometimes being obvious still doesn't make it happen. Thankfully, it did here. I love the episodes with Jeannie.
My favourite sibling actors 💖
Great video.
I LOVED these episodes.
Kate is so god damn hot. She was brilliant as Jeannie... so glad they made that change. Totally fell in love with her. It's a shame that Stargate isn't still on because they had so many female role models for STEM.
The "sister seed" was planted in episode "Hot zone" (S1E13) not in the "Letters from Pegasus" (S1E18).
When the exploration was exposed to the nanovirus and Rodney though he will die in moments, he says : "Listen ! I have a sister" around 26 minutes.
Maybe they didn't shoot in order?
Some of the best episodes
Kate - both you and your brother did an absolutely fantastic job on your roles! They could not possibly have done any better with "Dr. Ingram and his brother" lol
Mckay was perfect for that tv series. 😁
@@luismachado6264 McKay was my favourite character from his first appearance in SG1 ! I would love a spin-off with him and Jeannie !
I love these episodes Kate is so good
One of my favorite sci-fi shows.
No Wonder McKay and Mrs. Miller was so awesome. Gonna put it on wright now. Thanks GateWorld.........
This was so funny hehe!
I have to agree with other comments - she looks younger (and better) than the show. She is my favorite Hewlett!
I always got a real sister vibe when they were on camera. Who knew!
A sister played a sister. Wow, some acting skills there.
loool this was hilarious. Man i love Kate. She's awesome!
This was easily on pair with John and Keegan de Lancie in ST VOY: Q2.
i love kate🥰🥰🥰
FIrst time I saw this episode I was like huh!, they look so much alike. So after watching I see the credits and found they have the same last name and got my mind blown to find out they were actual siblings in real life.
Kate is so pretty
Kate Hewlett, I did not realize they were actual brother and sister ... would have to say you could ask for a better sister in reality and fiction. If the show comes back would like to see her more ... loved when the first time series together. Rodney knocks on the door ... they have few words and her husband walks in ... he's wondering who this man is ... she says he my brother ... her husband has this look like I didn't know you had a brother ...
With McKay, Shepherd, Zekenka, and Ronan there were already enough brother dynamics on the show.
Kate is the Prettiest lady ever!!!
Dude... how young was she when she did that episode? How long has it been since? You can barely see an age difference.
I thought Kate played a Great sibling to Rodney. It wasn’t till years later I found out they were actually siblings. 💂♂️🪖⛑️🏴🇨🇦
"Head smashed in buffalo jump"
....
"so... not Shakespeare then?!"
Sometimes nepotism is a good thing! Like here, it made an interesting episode of the show into something better.
I'm not gonna lie. I'm kinda in love with Kate. Her appearances were amazing.
didn't Rodney mention his sister in earlier episode as well? i think he mentioned it in one of the first couple of episodes.
Yes! In Season One's "Hot Zone." It was scripted as "brother," and David Hewlett asked that it be changed to "sister."
Kate really should have been offered a lot more random bit parts (that fit her schedule) on SG and other shows by that same "Vancouver group". Obviously part of their sibling dynamic was just due to their natural long-term relationship, but beyond that she just seemed natural in a way that very few people do. More Rodney + Jeannie in the next SG series please... of course the more mature Rodney he became and not the creepy demeaning "Carter stalking" early iteration of him. :D
I thought it was the episode Hot Zone where David first brings up the line, "I have a sister..."
Yep, it was "Hot Zone" that had the line changed from brother to sister. Then in "Letters from Pegasus" Rodney records her a message, and we get Jeannie's name.
I had no idea she is his real sister, No wonder it felt so Natural.
Wow this was only 2 years ago ??? She hasn't aged a day !!! WTF??
Wait, they were actual siblings? I guess that's why it was so believable and enjoyable hahah.
dHewlett is rodney's UA-cam channel
That was a great episode. Wow... I had no idea you too were actually syblings IRL. I just watched this episode... Was that captain Kirk joke scripted? It was great...
I’m more than willing to change my last name to Hewlett, Miss. 😉
I though _A Dog's Breakfast_ was very funny. At first I was WTF are the Stargate crew doing in this movie and then I kept waiting for more and more of them to show up. I buy a copy of the movie and watch it again.
Did Kate Hewlett forget to age?
“Sorrey”
First lol
I was actually first...
To make this dumb joke ;)
I wish hosts on these kinds of video would just shut up and let the guest speak.
Need a tissue?
These are two people having a good time and giving you free entertainment while sharing things about what we all love.
Adria was a more likable character.
