- October 22, 2012 we spend the day at Speed, Indiana to watch the cement mill get switched by one of Southern Indiana Railroad's Cummins powered Alco's, and the Louisville and Indiana. First we see the SIND pulling cars in the early morning hours. They make a run out to the CSX interchange at Watson and back to the engine house where they break for a while and wait the drop from the L&I. Then it's back to work at the mill before resting for the day.

Great video! I live just south of there about 8 miles. My girlfriends son-in-law worked at that cement plant there in Speed. I am modeling CSX. I call it the Monon division. I also have four of the Louisville and Indiana railroad engines.
But they are the new color scheme maroon and gold. I have a friend who was selling an atlas engine that he painted in the green and yellow. After watching this I had to call him and tell him I want to buy it. Thanks for helping me increase my engine rooster! LOL 😊

Been by the cement plant many a time as my Pappy used to work across the road (Highway 31) from it till he retired. He was a driver for the old C.T. Hertzch trucking co. in Speed. They hauled that Louisville/Portland cement all over. I've toted many a 94lb. bag of cement too, lol, everytime we poured concrete at home, (front porch, driveway barrier, barn floor, etc etc) Pappy would come home with a truckload of those bags of cement :)
Never saw the 117 lb. bags. Ask them if they knew Jack Carrier. That was my Pappy.

I thought this was going to be fast, but that is just the name of the town. The Irony of it is that all switching is very slow, so I became skeptical.

Remembering the old rail yard beside 31 in front of the cement plant, it was always full of Southern RR boxcars.

Use to see allot in past and sometimes.. Now see crews Riding on the End of cars or as in this Video off the Engines Back in the Day It was either the MoPac Crews coming threw our small Town or others they done switching off the Main to Elevators And in the Bigger city of Hutch we'd see the Santa Fe Crews now BNSF Riding on end of the cars sometimes moving at a pretty fast clip, In Hutch we have about 5 big Elevators 1 being a Mile Long, Mostly wheat is stored in them but the farmers in Area also cut Milo, Soybeans and Corn.. the BNSF yard is always busy but the one in Newton is I'd say more.. Because of Trains coming from more Directions...
If the Hooterville kid was seen by a official on the UPRR copping a right on that knuckle he would of been home by noon washing dishes..

Seems like there would be a way to reclaim that pressure for the brake system. The longer the cut of cars the longer it takes to get the brakes up and operational.

It was a trolley line. I believe it might have been the same name.

There are NO right angle turns on this railroad.
I couldn't believe it the conductor stepping on to a moving train. How dangerous is that? Note I'm not calling any one stupid or anything but he steps on to a moving train at 13:23! I thought that was a safety violation.
I don't believe that it is a violation. It used to be though.

Did the SIND ALCO start as an S1 or an S2? Seems like the 600 hp Cummins is about right for their work. Although you don't get the turbo whistle you would with the 1000 hp 539T.
+gravelydon I believe it was an S2. The Cummins was not a good investment. I think one guy said they were on their third one!
+DH7409 Almost sounds as bad as our experience at work with the 8.3s We went thru 5 and rebuilt 4 before the USA Corp of Engineers had had enough of them. We then got Cats and had no problems. The 8.3s weren't meant to be run 24/7 at full power. 100 days straight and then they'd fail. Oil changes were done every 250 as required but that only meant 1 hour's down time. We had a 100 hours break-in time on them before they went full bore. The Cats, 3406s, way over powered the pumps so no problems.

I would say that was a ALCO S-1 not an S-2. Identifiers? The radiators. And the Blount trucks. The Blount trucks were used on the S-1/2 engines and the S-3/4 used AAR type A trucks to reduce maintenance. The ALCO S-1/4 had a radiator that was taller than it was wide. The S-2/4 radiator was wider that it was tall to get rid the the extra heat the turbocharged engine created.
Simply look where the railroad blocked out parts of the original radiator when they repowered the locomotive.

good video collection...bad title. not too funny and misleading. What is the fuel capacity of those GP38 locomotives? they look as if the shop chop them further down to SW-series useage.

Looks to be early gp38 production and the fuel tanks appear to be 900 gallon tanks which were the optional tanks on SW-1500 switchers.
What type of Horn did the Alco have???
Definitely a 5 chime. My initial thought was a Nathan K5LA but on second thought I think it's a Leslie.

The switchman, or whatever he's called these days, is not very smart riding the knuckle on the rear car.
He's sitting on the end platform. Only his feet are on the coupler.
I agree, obviously not against their rules but not the best way to ride a car
that's gotta be some mind-numbingly boring work.
What's boring work?
This is one of the few industrial/blue-collar jobs I wouldn't mind having.
