    Linda Lavin schmaltzing up the Alice opening must be muzak in hell. She sounded like a hammy lounge singer who was very impressed with herself

    Another of Andrea Martin's astounding impersonations. Those of us who grew up with Alice can recognize the brilliance of this parody of Linda Lavin's singing style. Short as Jamie Farr and Levy as Lorne Green were also spot on. "Sweeps Week" is one of the best episodes of Network 90 with a brilliant wraparound.

      Agree. If you were around at this time, you get how brilliant everyone here is. The Lavin stuff is spot on. Short as Farr, Joe Flaherty as Gavin MacLeod. And John Candy as football player turned actor Merlin Olsen, sitting at the feet of Lorne Green (Eugene Levy) as if he's in the league of Brando- so goddamned funny. This kind of humor no longer exists.

    40 years later and a childhood away and this is STILL FUNNY AS HELL. Gawd Bless Andrea Martin. She had Lavin's card. Anybody that watched Alice faithfully and remembers the Flo beef knows this is THE TRUTH.

    I'm from Chicago. Does anyone remember around the years of 1984, SCTV came on, I think at midnight or one am on Friday or Saturday nights. Back then that was considered the graveyard shift for a television program. I remember it being viewed by critics as a second rate Saturday Night Live type show. Back then I was too young to really appreciate their brilliance, but they were just as good as Saturday Night Live, if not better in some aspects. I'm so glad I can actually watch it again, through the Internet. Andrea Martin did some funkin' fantastic, hilarious impersonations!

    • @AmyLSacks
      @AmyLSacks 6 років тому +1

      It was around '88, when the show was in syndication weekdays out here (PNW), that I really got to pay attention to it. In '84 I was still a bit young to be up during the small hours. :)

      I was in college by then (1984) and lived for the weekend late night hour when this was on U.S. network TV - was it after SNL on NBC? I had been watching it since it arrived in Philadelphia on our old channel 48 some time in the late '70s. I loved parody since I was a little kid and this was the best parody television available to satisfy my taste! And Andrea Martin embodied some of the best characters on SCTV. Saturday Night Live seemed to me to be very weak at getting the details down, especially in their early years.

    I wish SCTV was being shown in re runs somewhere, hello me tv and antenna tv, , by the way according to both Polly Holliday and Diane Ladd who worked with her on Alice this take on her pretty much hits the mark

    I don't even see Andrea Martin anymore: I'm seeing Linda Lavin. That's how good Andrea is at her craft. Lavin really did "SCHMALTZ" up that opening for "Alice"

    I've always thought Linda was a hammy singer, and apparently I'm not alone. I can't listen to the opening of Alice without cringing. Especially after the first season, when she started to really overdue it.

      One of my high school friends would joke that each new season of her show the theme song would be sung differently, as she would attempt to sing it "with a little more feeeeeling." It was like she was trying to tell us she was more than just Alice on TV!

    I loved this show. I often wonder how Linda Lavin felt about this -- I mean they really put her through the grinder on this one. Since most comedy shows didn't do Linda Lavin parodies, she probably chose to just ignore this particular skit, hoping others would never see it.

    • @thelobsterjesus
      @thelobsterjesus 3 роки тому +1

      I would guess that Lavin didn't like this parody. She took herself very seriously.

    • @eduardo_corrochio
      @eduardo_corrochio Рік тому +2

      I hope she loathed it. She was an insecure jerk. Lavin, like a child, couldn't tolerate Polly Holliday becoming popular as the Flo character so she had the woman removed from the series. Wow. Yes, Polly got her own sitcom but it bombed so fast.

  • @brucegordon7248

    I thought she would have done the theme song to Alice, the show she starred in. Early to rise, early to bed, in between I cooked and cleaned and went out of my head.

    • @brucegordon7248
      @brucegordon7248 5 років тому +2

      She's coming out with a new show on CBS, kind of a sequel to "Alice". The theme song will be "There's an Old Girl in Town" as she sings the opening line.

    • @thelobsterjesus
      @thelobsterjesus 3 роки тому +2

      I think they decided to make it an extra cringeworthy parody by having Lavin sing a song that was supposed to be sung by a black woman.

    Within many of these comments are what us tweens said and laughed about years ago. That Lavin thinks she can sing more than she can, the obnoxious ending of the song, the lounge singer aspect. Hilarious that so many others thought the same things.
