  • So, if in viewing my Golden Agers Jammin' in New Orleans playlist, it seems that I have a connection to a lot of New Orleans musicians, its because I do. It started when my best high school buddy, now Dr. Keith Ferdinand, and I hung out whenever and wherever we could to immerse ourselves in this music. Keith's brother, Kalamu Ya Salaam had an extensive album collection (biggest I ever knew) and he actually curated it for us, in a certain way. "Y'all ought to listen to this."
    And we did.
The summer after high school graduation, we went out in the streets with grown man money, thanks to Keith's summer job at the Post Office and mine at the telephone company... and we got paid on opposite weekends. We always had money and that was a time when the policeman got paid every Tuesday, so we never got carded, except once at Sylvia's, but when Sammy Berfect, who was setting up his Hammond B3 saw, he yelled out, "Let them boys in. They just going to sit right there have a drink and listen to the music." The "there" was a center front table because we got there early.
    About Episode 13
Episode 13's first segment is the New Orleans Mystics old school singing group returning to City Park Thursdays at Twilight series at the Pavilion of Two Sisters in City Park’s Botanical Gardens after their Israel tour. There are several acts that we enjoy every year at the 6-8pm concerts. Check out City Parks website for calendar of events: neworleanscitypark.org/calendar/.
The Mystics sell out every show, every year (over 400 people) and you will see why. If you don't buy tickets for this show as soon as the website opens ticket sales, you'll miss out. That's the only reason Dianne and Ronnie weren't with the Posse. These 6-8 shows on Thursdays are perfect for Golden Agers. By popular demand, they have been scheduled to do a second show in October, which I'm sure will also sell out
    .
The second segment came about because Kurt Pellerin was planning a party for his wife Latoya. Kurte communicated that D-Cruise and the G-Funk band were pulling out all the stops, costumes and all, to bring a funk show to the upstairs stage at LeRoux's. There's much more space and a larger dance floor upstairs and that makes a difference.
You will see that D-Cruise and the D-Funk band did not disappoint!
Looks like Kurte is moving his event venue from the Downman Rd location to upstairs at Leroux's on he lake. It makes sense to me.
The third segment came about because we hadn't had an opportunity to enjoy the globally recognized saxophonist, composer and band leader Donald Harrison Jr locally for some time. Or should I say Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr.
In addition to being a Jazz / Funk/ Fusion (Nea Jazz) artist and bandleader, his family is deep into the Mardi Gras masking Indian tradition. His Dew Drop Inn performance that included Tonya Boyd and "Choppa" had something for everyone. They even previewed their entry into the New Orleans Saints hype song genre. Lots of fun and serious musicianship as well.
