I have said it before, and I will say it again. I will never be to old to learn as long as I watch your video's Mike. Best wishes from Yorkshire Rob ( the old fart )
Balancing and blueprinting is a lost art mate and it definitely makes a world of difference, it's reassuring to see it still being done, great vid Mike 👍👍
Britannica Restorations Ltd I really think you could be on to a good earner with it if you make the traditional style and then cover all bases with the other cheese and onion 🧅 jobs .Even the sweet ones too .with the truly low cost to make them compared with the profits they can make . I’m certain if they don’t have them definitely couldn’t lose your pants on a trial run in a farmers market type event. I know people that only really sell them during tourist season here they definitely are not broke and they holiday plenty and then even worse can afford to own and run a dammmmm boat with no issues with the running cost. Could be worse idea 💡 to punt
Britannica Restorations Ltd just another thing you could not call them Cornish pasty’s just Cornish style pasties as believe me Cornwall will take you to court they are really hot on it haha however what I say will clear your path to your future future if you choose to take a good bet by the sound of it
Very interesting Mike. Never done balancing so I thought you just chucked them on the scales. It makes sense to balance each end if you think hard enough. (Something I am not accustomed to doing)
@@BritannicaRestorations Seriously, this is the sort of "lost art" that people need to be showed, just to keep it alive. Might not be especially useful on a Landy but knowledge is always better than ignorance.
Amazing! Why is needed such precision in the weight of the rods? Just some grams could be dangerous for premature wearing of the crankshaft? Great job!! 💪🏻💪🏻
It did make a diffidence in the last engine - really ran smooth - I will be sure Dave will be along soon and work out what force 6 grams can have on the shaft
@@BritannicaRestorations Found this: "The centripetal forces generated by any imbalance increases exponentially in proportion to speed. Double the rpms and you quadruple the force. "
@@BritannicaRestorations Now...with the rods (even matched!) being lighter than original, does that require the crank / flywheel be rebalanced? And will you compare the complete rod/pin/ringset/piston assembly weight to the new setup? (I'm just a pain in the ass, aren't I?)

Hi mIke, I refuse to watch any of your engine rebuild vids because it’ll make me want to strip mine down into tiny pieces. Resulting in me asking you how to put it back together again every 5 minutes!

Great point
I bet you was a wizard with Meccano.
Proper job as we say in Cornwall time for a pasty mike
No pork pies or pasties here! Maybe I should branch out!?

im just doing my 300tdi rods. they are alot lighter at the big end at 880. i believe they are original to.
If this match they will be fine

@@BritannicaRestorations It was Mike, for any engine build, not just Defenders
Blimey!
You'll be porting heads and remapping ECUs next.
Hmm, don't think so!

Mike, you got Cosworth scared ....1262 full house ...... unbelievable
i know right!

It is akin to balancing tyres - you need to make the rotation as smooth as possible and on a diesel it can make them run smoother
Ever heard of Heath Robinson, Mile??? Lol
I think he was one of my teachers...
Some serious Blueprinting not seen since 1978.

@@BritannicaRestorations I remember the video. Blueprinting used to be the ultimate engine modification for rich folk.
@@BritannicaRestorations haha!
Mike; no need to tell you to make sure those pins all match; remember last time? :-))))
I knew you would be here Dave! How much difference does 6 grams make to the shaft at high rpm? I forgot the formula

In the next video you will see a brand new MWM forged steel crank pre balanced!
I knew there was a smarty pants answer!
Thanks Dave!
But it's just an old diesel Mike, probably only one step up from Stephenson's Rocket...
It does make them smoother

I guess factory don’t do what you do ????
No
Why is rod balancing worthwhile for a low revving diesel?
I used to do this on engines I was building for racing, but they were running @ 7 - 8000
It does make them smoother
@@BritannicaRestorations mmm I have my doubts. We humans have the inclination to think that the more effort we put into something, the better it must be.
I did one last year - big difference
Defender has less no load speed than disco be fine if you keep oil in engine lol
Balancing rods on an old landrover . Its not a space shuttle . Be plenty other bits rattling and vibrating
