Although ive been at trying to clean this surface for hours and making almost no progress with a shop rag, toothbrush and other nylon brushes. about to say fk it and grab a red scotchbrite like you have, i bought some for this job but that was before i read about not using them.

That "refreshed motor" was pretty much just out of the junk yard with as little care as possible. Informative video thanks.
You can cut them grooves a lot deeper on your old head stud to use as a chase.

They are not left or right specific
Will I be ok if I used a scotch bright disk on a cordless drill slow to medium speed?

Scrap blade and scotch Brite? O no. That's what air tools are for
A little time on the heads will definitely save you some time later down the road.

But then again looking at the heads both ends look the same.
they are both the same, the Ls motors don't have a left or right head.
So your not worried about the old gasket material going in and around the engine, oil and cooling jackets?
Thought………….. how about using a 4 flute tap!
