I am in Kouvola now teaching classes in Utti with the Finnish Defense Forces, and can say Finland is one of the coolest places on earth. Everyone is super cool and many speak a little to a lot of English. It's probably why Ian visits so often. Every American should visit....... in autumn.....
Looks like a blast, reminds me of the March and Shoot we used to do in the British Army, 5 mile run, 25 obstacle assault course and then a shoot. I ended up in my Company team, it really was about fitness, the fitter you are the quicker your breathing returns to normal and the better your shooting is. I think you did well. If I had one piece of advice I'd look at how your kit is bouncing about on your body, I always made sure that mine was secure and comfortable, stops rubbing and is just easier to move about especially when going from prone to standing or climbing in and out of an APC.

This looked even more fun than yesterday. I was impressed by how your running times actually improved after "warm up". I can imagine this 2-day challenge leaves you really really exhausted, thoroughly drained. Frankly it sort of reminds of battle training camps in military, just more intense and more stuff, less resting times. You did fantastic in all these stages, especially the spinner training reaps rewards. You didn't even seem stressed out about the spinners and cleared them with intent. Watching these and the gun reviews on utreon made me realize a couple of big shortcomings in its service to take over youtube. The audio tracks are entirely different sounding, despite youtube compressing them a ton, it still sounds better on youtube. And on utreon you can't watch on higher than 480p without signing up. Not a big deal if you're ready to commit to the service already, but it certainly doesn't attract someone who is not yet decided and just checks out what's offered.
Not being able to cast to my tv is a big deal too. I don’t mind watching the occasional short video on my phone but with UA-cam I can cast and just sit back and watch… and still use my phone for other stuff.

NOT wanting to do that. 20 year smoker, smoking roughly 100g of tobacco a week (about 2 packs a day), i can jog ok enough, albeit slowly, but just those matches would have me heaving, let alone running half a marathon in full gear everyday for two days straight. ian is not only a compendium of knowledge even the industry pros respect, he's a goddamn machine for shooting so cleanly after that much fatigue. also, eyeballing it, he's like in the top 25% of competitors. congratulations on a well deserved victory for finishing the brutality

That's my favorite "space pen/pencil" story.* We spent millions designing MRAPs you can't see out of, that tend to roll over on Afghan terrain. The Soviets just rode on top of the vehicle. You hit a mine, it guts the troop compartment and... you hop off the roof and carry on. *Yeah, the space pen thing is fake: It wasn't designed on the government dollar, and NASA used pencils too, but there are problems with pencils, like conductive graphite shavings floating around in microgravity, and pencil writing tending to smudge, and so on. IIRC Roskosmos is very happy to use space pens these days.

A Swedish Viking kind of terminator…the winner of Recon division was a range officer, which means he shot all 10 stages and ran the entire 30km in a single day (Friday staff match).
This is cool!! with Ian putting in a incredible performance. Deep bow with my hat off. My 60+ year old CV fitness and current shooting skills not in the appropriate universe to actually be able to compete safely there. Looks like a great experience.
All new level of respect for Ian. It's one thing to run a match butt naked, another to shoot well with the physical strain element. At 61, part of me wants to actually do one of these matches...luckily the butt naked part offers a viable reason not to. LOL.
Do you normally run much Ian? Almost 10 miles in one day is a pretty good training run all by itself; let alone doing it in combat kit and BOOTS! It helps breaking it up into 2 mile increments (1.86 to be exact) bit still . . . I toy with the idea of trying something like that, but unfortunately, running put my knees on notice many years ago. And that typically maxed out averaging 3-5 mile/day, and no kit.
I thought I was pretty fit in 2000-2001. 6'½, 178-192, ran 7min miles at my "cruising speed". This would have destroyed me. Ian, I must bow down in absolute awe to your level of fitness to do this match! 🙇♂️🙇♂️🙇♂️
Mate you would have made a bloody good Infantryman. Scratch that a bloody good SF Trooper. Watching you do these two videos reminded me a lot t of my time in the Australian Army. In my rifle platoon we had a lot of Commando-trained NCO's and a Commando-trained Skipper. So we got absolutely beasted- especially in terms of fitness and marksmanship. Australian Regular Infantry are trained to US Ranger standards as it is. Bloody hats off mate. You do this for fun?

When you see the inside of a BMP you can really tell why troops prefer to ride on top of theirs whenever possible.

Hey Ian, perhaps look into getting some mountain biking knee sleeves, they’re minimal, light and way more comfortable than the things you had on.
