- On this date in 1955, the CBS television show "Sergeant Preston Of The Yukon" debuted. The program follows a Canadian Mountie named Sgt. Preston who patrols the wilds of the Yukon with his horse Rex and faithful dog Yukon King, battling both the elements & criminals. Ray's very first hit single (or an "almost hit" as he now refers to it) of the same name was released later in 1960 and was about the show. It even included Ray barking and howling as Preston's dog! Unfortunately, Ray had not gotten the rights for the character and they were forced to pull the song from release. Here is the original version of Ray's first "almost" hit!

Great find!!! Thanks for committing this to digital. People like you understand what radio used to be (once upon a time, radio DJ's understood and loved music).
There needs to be a HUGE database somewhere for not only catalogues of artist music, but also room for gems like this.
I knew RAY was into parodies but THIS......LOL!!
Sgt Preston's people sent Ray a cease and desist letter, the reason it was pulled from the radio
As the first comment of 2020 let me give some notice of the novelty single hitting 60 this year. It was originally released in July 1960 on NRC Records, a record label that was co-owned/co-founded by a very important figure in the career of Ray Stevens: Bill Lowery.
Perfect for his time and I watched him on Hee Haw show on tv. It was some memories that will go with me
Keep up the good work @)ray Stevens 20+ years of great funny music i have to admit though when you get political though I agree with a lot of what you say it just isn't as funny as the classics like Mississippi squeal or Ahab the Arab
Good
Lol. The fun was real back then
Awesome
this song only went to #108 on the pop charts in 1960!!!
