  • Manipur has a population of around 3.5 million people who come from numerous communities, a violent past, and now, it seems it is heading towards an uncertain future. Anyone familiar with Manipur's history and the present knows that the state’s Imphal valley and the hills have mostly moved parallel to each other and rarely together.
But on one fine day in March, we saw a strong sense of unity among the Hills and Valley. Members of The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF), Democratic Students' Alliance Of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA), Students' Union Of Kangleipak (SUK), Apunba Imagi Machasing Manipur (AIMS) and All Naga Students' Association of Manipur (ANSAM) took part in the sit-in demonstration in collaboration with the Manipur Students Association in Delhi.
A few days before the Delhi event, protests in Imphal demanding the NRC got so aggressive that the police had to lathi-charge the protesters. In this episode of Decoded, we explain why is this demand finding so many backers in Manipur and why it may be ‘impossible’ to implement.
