Kirkland was going thru a lot of personal problems before that fight. One being his trainer, Ann Wolf! Who didn't train him for that fight. Look at Kirkland past fights with Ann Wolf, and you will see he was a different fighter. So yes, even with one loss and all the punishment he endured, without Ann, he was no match for Canelo, and Canelo knew this.
Yes but Canelo isn't the only one with hard punch. I think Canelo's reign is over with Bivol & Benavidez on top :) don't wanna take anything away from all his achievements but I never saw really Canelo s being "the real deal", he's not a typical best boxer there is, he's too static, relying mostly on his guard. I believe Benavidez is better in about every way, perhaps Canelo can punch a lil harder sometime, but you have to land too.

Caleb barely survived with Benavidez. Canelo vs Benavidez would be a chest match with Alvarez slightly edging him on the scorecards and winning via split decision.

Either way, canelo had caleb on wobbly legs, caleb was there the whole time against benavidez+ a head butt cut.

Also, one can't deny that Plant had a lot of help from the referee.... what's worst is that at least Plant won a few rounds on Benavidez who came up in weight, while Canelo lost practically every round to Bivol. He was out landed in every round.

You gotta worry about canelos counter punching ability, power, body shots and he makes adjustments better than benavidez. Benavidez has very basic head movement, and he had the better physical attributes against plant, if he was this Mexican monster everyone says he is, he would’ve took plant out. Yes the ref did help plant in the clinch, but David also landed a lot of clean shots on caleb and couldn’t put him away. You saw what canelo was able to do at only 5’8, he’d still beat benavidez. David doesn’t even use his jab effectively or at all. canelo has trouble with elusive fighters with reach, David’s gonna be there to get hit.

I think Benavidez will test Canelo, but Canelo has an underrated IRON chin. He’s fought some tough opponents and hasn’t touched the canvas. Triple G, Bivol, Danny Jacobs, etc. His stature gives him a formidable advantage over David B because he’s shorter and naturally that will draw him toward targeting his body. He doesn’t go past 10 rounds if Canelo is RIGHT physically. He’s fought A TON over the past 2 years. Put it like this, Bivol handled Canelo quite easily. I don’t feel like David can beat Bivol (a class above right now). If I’m David, I would use that reach, Jab and setup other shots and stay away from close exchanges with Canelo and away from the ropes.

Don't forget Golvovkin won the 1st fight, thanks to Adelaid Bird. He then lost when he abandoned his style & tried to box Canelo.. The high pressure style of Benavidez works in the 2nd half of the fight when Canelo gasses out. It could be a decision win against Canelo as with Plant, but the judges are always on Canelo's side, so that makes it more difficult.
