Academic Publishing: Time To Move Away From For-Profit Publishers?

For researchers it is crucial to publish their academic results. Publish or perish. But academic publishing has a set of problems, which need to be discussed.
First, we discuss the difference between subscription-based and open access publication. Although open access publication is preferred, as it allows everyone to be able to read research results, it has led to an increase in prices of publications.
Furthermore, the margin of profit on article processing charges can be quite dramatic. Yet, very little or none of this profit goes to the people who do the most work: Editors and peer-reviewers. In one example, editors of the journal NeuroImage requested lowered prices for publication. When this request was ignored, all editors decided to quit and start a new non-profit journal.
It shows that there are problems with the current academic publishing system, that need to be addressed.

Yes, it should be non-profit and open. I tried to publish a preprint in arxiv the other day they need endorsements now which makes it exclusive too for independent researchers! academia in general needs an overhaul.
