This is really confusing to me because isn’t a high school graduation a celebratory moment..aren’t you supposed to celebrate when receiving your diploma? Why would my family and friends not applaud and cheer for me ?that doesn’t make any sense at all? I would have grabbed that diploma out that basket and walked off the stage and told my family and friends to come on. Let’s get the hell up out of here. To be honest, it couldn’t have been my mother she would have showed her a complete ass. Nobody would’ve left at school that day.😅

@@Rytexture Yea, she did the griddy across the stage. Three clowns couldn’t contain themselves and decided to push the line. Do you not see the dozens of other students who managed to contain themselves and follow the rules? These 2/3 are not special in any way and they need to learn now that actions have consequences.
You also need to look up how many idiots have acted like fools in these ceremonies & ruined the entire thing for everyone. They do this for a reason.

Went to an large graduation recently, Students were celebrating across the platform - families were cheering - audience was only able to hear a few name announced. Also was super long as they tried to give "reaction" time to each student but it was useless as multiple families of course had the "only" student that deserved being recognized. 30 sec × 300 graduates= 150 minutes.
Graduation is a ceremony - parties afterward are a celebration.

I think it may be the quantity of graduates. If there's 200 grads & each takes 1 minute to celebrate its over 3 hours to just get thru the reading of names. I still don't get how anyone see this girl as a victim instead a selfish inconsiderate person.

From all the footage I have seen, this appears to be clearly about (petty) CONTROL: controlling the graduates behavior AND behavior of the audience during what is clearly a celebration. "Breaking the rules" is all relative and an appropriate celebratory jig is not that IMHO. Holding applause and not cheering is about reducing the time consumed during the ceremony, not about having a steadfast rule of behaving like it is a funeral. These students did NOTHING wrong. A lawsuit against the Principal and the school should be filed IMMEDIATELY! The parents and community as a whole, should be extremely PROUD of the young ladies for not only their scholastic achievements but for their controlled reactions as THEIR diplomas were denied to them on that stage. The angry, ugly hearted, (and most likely) racist Principal showed her true colors on that stage. It sure looks like a control issue to me, especially when they were told to "own" it. Making lots of noise, with air horns! is out of bounds as it does slow up the proceedings.
My graduation was a lot different, but it was decades ago. We came up in lines, faced the audience and took one step forward when our name was announced. Once all that row of graduates was announced, we then turned to our right and walked over to the person handing out our diplomas. Once seated in the auditorium again, if we saw that we got the wrong one, we were instructed to pass them up or down the row until it got to the right person. Quiet? Yup.

Funny how my friends debated about going to our highschool graduation because it was like breathing. Didn't everyone get their highschool diploma? Perhaps if you had a learning disability, but in our school (both super-rich and super-poor) graduated with no problems. It was one thing to get straight As but another to pass to graduate. These days, it's even easier to get good grades looking at the expectations LOL But we still went to have fun - not to get some diploma that we immediately threw into our closet. Now, we were more excited about next stage - many went on to college (some chose majors that actually got them a job after LOL), some went straight into the workforce, and others travelled. But perhaps high school is a bigger deal these days... but I get it if you have a learning disabilty or abusive home. Our friends, both from rich and very poor neighborhoods, all graduated from highschool.

On June 9, the Philadelphia High School for Girls, the only all-girl public school in the city, held its commencement ceremony for the class of 2023. Before the event, prospective graduates were informed that they and their families and friends had to abide by certain rules during the ceremony. After hearing their names announced, candidates would then be allowed to walk - and only walk - across the stage to receive their diploma. During that time, their families and friends sitting in the audience would not be permitted to clap, cheer, or call out the graduate's name.
Unfortunately, some students and members of the audience appeared to have violated some of those rules. Rather than simply walking, Hafsah Abdur-Rahman silently performed a dance known as the Griddy. She later told reporters that she performed the dance in honor of her late sister, who was fatally shot in 2014 when she was just 15 years old. Before the dance, she also signaled to the crowd to remain silent during her brief performance, but the gesture and the dance prompted ripples of laughter from the crowd.
After Abdur-Rahman reached the end of the stage, she went to receive the diploma, which was in the hands of principal Lisa Mesi. However, Mesi refused to give Abdur-Rahman the diploma and instead instructed her to return to her seat, a command that Abdur-Rahman obeyed.
Abdur-Rahman later expressed anger and confusion that she had been denied her diploma during the ceremony. "She stole that moment from me," Abur-Rahman said of Mesi. "I will never get that again."
"I understood the rules because I was saying 'shh' in the video. Do not say nothing because I want my diploma," she continued. "I knew and understood what we were supposed to do."
Another graduate, Saleemah Burch, was also frustrated to be denied her diploma after she appeared to flip her hair and make a hand gesture which looked like she was pointing to the sky with her index finger. Her mother and brother also stood up in the audience and raised their hands as they watched Burch walk across the stage.
