It sure looks like a control issue to me, especially when they were told to "own" it. Making lots of noise, with air horns! is out of bounds as it does slow up the proceedings. My graduation was a lot different, but it was decades ago. We came up in lines, faced the audience and took one step forward when our name was announced. Once all that row of graduates was announced, we then turned to our right and walked over to the person handing out our diplomas. Once seated in the auditorium again, if we saw that we got the wrong one, we were instructed to pass them up or down the row until it got to the right person. Quiet? Yup.

Funny how my friends debated about going to our highschool graduation because it was like breathing. Didn't everyone get their highschool diploma? Perhaps if you had a learning disability, but in our school (both super-rich and super-poor) graduated with no problems. It was one thing to get straight As but another to pass to graduate. These days, it's even easier to get good grades looking at the expectations LOL But we still went to have fun - not to get some diploma that we immediately threw into our closet. Now, we were more excited about next stage - many went on to college (some chose majors that actually got them a job after LOL), some went straight into the workforce, and others travelled. But perhaps high school is a bigger deal these days... but I get it if you have a learning disabilty or abusive home. Our friends, both from rich and very poor neighborhoods, all graduated from highschool.

On June 9, the Philadelphia High School for Girls, the only all-girl public school in the city, held its commencement ceremony for the class of 2023. Before the event, prospective graduates were informed that they and their families and friends had to abide by certain rules during the ceremony. After hearing their names announced, candidates would then be allowed to walk - and only walk - across the stage to receive their diploma. During that time, their families and friends sitting in the audience would not be permitted to clap, cheer, or call out the graduate's name. Unfortunately, some students and members of the audience appeared to have violated some of those rules. Rather than simply walking, Hafsah Abdur-Rahman silently performed a dance known as the Griddy. She later told reporters that she performed the dance in honor of her late sister, who was fatally shot in 2014 when she was just 15 years old. Before the dance, she also signaled to the crowd to remain silent during her brief performance, but the gesture and the dance prompted ripples of laughter from the crowd. After Abdur-Rahman reached the end of the stage, she went to receive the diploma, which was in the hands of principal Lisa Mesi. However, Mesi refused to give Abdur-Rahman the diploma and instead instructed her to return to her seat, a command that Abdur-Rahman obeyed. Abdur-Rahman later expressed anger and confusion that she had been denied her diploma during the ceremony. "She stole that moment from me," Abur-Rahman said of Mesi. "I will never get that again." "I understood the rules because I was saying 'shh' in the video. Do not say nothing because I want my diploma," she continued. "I knew and understood what we were supposed to do." Another graduate, Saleemah Burch, was also frustrated to be denied her diploma after she appeared to flip her hair and make a hand gesture which looked like she was pointing to the sky with her index finger. Her mother and brother also stood up in the audience and raised their hands as they watched Burch walk across the stage. *These girls **_knew_** what they were doing was wrong! If you want to continue to support their rule breaking ways, you’re enabling them for a lifetime of acting badly without facing the consequences of their actions. I don't agree with the school, but doing that after each student makes the ceremony longer.
Neither girl that I saw was holding up anything. The entire thing was subdued even with the young woman who motioned for her 'fan base' to be quiet.
Quiet? Yup.
Lisa M Mesi is clearly a nasty woman and a disgrace to the school. She should be fired. ❤

They require people to be respectful and quiet. Crazy this black girl doesn’t know the meaning of respectful, wonder why?
Black Joy is far too often viewed as a threat or disruption of the “norm.” White kids often celebrate while crossing the stage as well, but Black youth are more likely to be denied, escorted out, or even confronted by police….for dancing. This girl barely shuffled her feet!!! Yet another example of power and control disproportionately applied to Black youth! Exhausting!!
Why shouldn’t black children be held to the highest standards and expectations? It’s because you don’t believe in them or their equality ! You have mentally reduced them to a lower race , with your ignorant empathy ! Your type of empathy leads to poverty and painful years !
She barely shuffled her feet, but she was hopping and flinging her arms around like she was making a tiktok. It’s about respect, following rules so everyone gets their time on stage. She broke the rules that almost 200 other girls followed, and you’re gonna say she’s held back. Ok boomer.

It wasn’t against the rules and the school spoke on it YALL are weird
They never interview Father's and it's not surprise.

For all the money forked over to the district for these kids to get an education for 12 years of their life and all the recent BS they had to go through over the last few years... I expect them to feel happy and celebrate their HS graduation. I expect the parents, students, and teachers to express some sort of joy for all the hard work they put in for the next generation of graduates. What a ridiculous rule of infringing the students' rights to express themselves! That teacher needs to hang their license on the Losers' Wall. That was a communist tactic that has no place in the United States of America. Shameful, and downright humiliating to the young students who earned their diplomas. That school should be sued I see nothing wrong with it
4 girls, out of over 200, broke the rules. If you don't see what's wrong with that, I hope you never have children. The rules apply to everyone.
"I will never get that again."
"I understood the rules because I was saying 'shh' in the video. Do not say nothing because I want my diploma," she continued. "I knew and understood what we were supposed to do."
Another graduate, Saleemah Burch, was also frustrated to be denied her diploma after she appeared to flip her hair and make a hand gesture which looked like she was pointing to the sky with her index finger. Her mother and brother also stood up in the audience and raised their hands as they watched Burch walk across the stage.
