With so many wedding DIYs out there, I wanted to put some of these tutorials to the test. Is it really worth it to do it yourself? Find out with this week's video on DIY or BUY?? A Garland Tutorial!
    Greenery Used:
    Lemon Leaf (or Salal)
    Seeded Eucalyptus
    Italian Ruscus
    Israeli Ruscus
    Supplies Needed:
    Pruning shears
    Needle nose pliers
    26 gauge paddle wire
5 (ish) feet of medium thickness rope
After pre-making quite a number of mini green bouquets and fastening them together with the wire, I set to wiring each of them directly to the rope, starting on one end and working my way towards the other.
About halfway through, I flipped the direction of the bouquets to give the garland a clear center, and to provide visual interest. Obviously, I learned the hard way that this was a bad idea! Next time, I'd say work from each end towards the center to avoid my mistake.
After attaching all of the prepped greens, I went back through and used the thicker Israeli Ruscus to add fullness, cover the wire and rope mechanics, and reinforce the strength of the garland.
    And guess what? It worked!
I did realize, however, that this was a HUGE undertaking. All in all, this one teensy little garland took me two hours to assemble. Ugh. I couldn't imagine doing this over and over and over again until I had enough for all my tables.
I'd definitely say this is a BUY, not a DIY!

A protip is using green floral wire so that it blends in with the green foliage

    • @ever_Chessy1
      @ever_Chessy1 5 років тому +7

I also thought about that, and whatever wire you do use, maybe use green floral tape over it, just a couple wrap arounds, to cover the wire and give it more stability.

You should start from both ends and then meet in the middle so that way you don't have to move the leaves out of the way when you wrap the wire!

A trick I've used before is instead of wiring the bunches and then wiring them to the rope, you instead just make your bunch and use the paddle wire to wire them to the rope. So you don't cut the paddle wire for the individual bunches but wire around 1 bunch then add your next bunch and wire again. Your basically just winding the spool around the entire length of the rope. It makes things a bit faster. Also using green paddle wire helps everything to blend in. Hope that all made sense. =)

you could make it through a group activity in 2 hours easily, if you have 10 friends or family members and it'd be super fun, I think I'll DIY it!! cuz I have 5 sisters 4 brothers!!

Done this in the pots outside front door. With flowers as well that were cut from the bushes today.the other cuttings i made a garland over the trellis entry point where there were plants still to grow. Big stalks of lavender and a giant rose branch accidentally cut by the guy gardening for me. New garden and starting to really love making it better. Grass next. Thanks for the video. next door neighbor is a gardener with a perfectly manicured lawns, mine is a landscape bushes and trees garden with a trellis and summer house. New house, new learning curve.

This is great! I'm tempted to try it with artificial greenery as well.

After I watched your video, I clicked on a video that was in the sidebar "DIY How to Create a Garland Table Runner" by Triangle Nursery - Wholesale Flowers & Florist Supplies. They did it quite differently than you did here and she was doing it rather slowly to be sure people could see what she was doing and to explain what she was doing as well. It took her about 25 minutes to create a 6 ft long table runner garland from soft ruscus and two kinds of eucalyptus.
While I think you did a beautiful job here with your garland, I agree that two hours between making the foliage "bouquets" and then securing them into a garland is just too much for a wedding. The way the lady at Triangle Nursery did it, though, might be a better way for weddings. I would suggest checking them out then perhaps give her way a try. Who knows, you might find it more worth your while to do it the way she did it. Or maybe not, I don't know, but it doesn't hurt to take a look. :)

This is GOLD!!! I definitely wouldn't make this if I had a ton of tables, but in my case, we're just doing immediate family at one long table, so this will hopefully work! QUESTION: How long will this last if made ahead???

Hint...buy dollar store vine to.use as the twine..takes less.....add real to it two days before...after testing your real stuff for lasting...at least four days ..use viles if u want flowers...gourds or fruit is better..

It looks good! Buuut the time it took to make and the fact that you had to go to 2 stores (floral store to get wire and string and then the flower shop) I would rather pay to get it made. For my wedding, we ordered it and it was more lush. Thanks for the video! Definitely thanking my florist 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

You can order garlands like this from a florist, like she mentioned... or you can also order them from Costco, which aren't as nice, but they're pretty inexpensive.
