It seems that spot metering has become the new "cool" thing in photo vids. Except most of the content creators have no idea how it works and lead their viewers down the mistaken path of point the spot meter at what you want to shoot and press the shutter. No interpretation, no "placement" of exposure, no thought of exposure "zone". You have done a thorough job of putting this very useful series together and I'm sure that a lot of viewers will use it to the betterment of their photography. I use a hand held meter, but am glad that you show the utility of the in camera meter since everyone already has one. I also smiled every time I heard. "...and this is important...". Yes...it all is. Good work Eric. Thanks.

Thank you Eric. Great video! I'd love to see a follow up with real image settings as examples so we could see the action settings and histogram.

Hi Eric, nice videos explained. Since you have shot film, can you make video on how to shoot slide film using spot metering, especially digital camera spot meter.

Spot metering can do wonders for your photos with a bit of practice, but keep in mind, even when you are used to spot metering, it can still take a couple of extra seconds to do this when shooting.
And in manual mode once your exposure is set and light remains the same all is good.
But if your subject moves from a sunlit area into a shaded area. You'll need to make further adjustments to slow shutter speed, open aperture or use a higher sensor speed.
I shoot manual mode and spot meter as it gives me the MOST control if I want to adjust over or under more than my camera suggests. Three clicks in either direction with any of my exposure control dials on my camera is a full stop up or down in exposure. And three clicks left top Main dial shutter then three clicks right rear Quick control dial aperture ( or vice versa) is only a perpetual change in shutter speed or aperture. But the exposure will remain the same in that light...Simple.

Find Fred Picker Zone 6, 1 percent spot meter equivalent of 1000mm lens. This is video is a good twist of averaging of finding middle for safe exposure representing the scene and all else will follow. Be careful in camera spot meter is not the same as hand held spot

Why do you only adjust shutter speed to correct exposure?

You adjust your exposure by changing the least of importance in your subject. landscape depth of field is important. So you would adjust shutter speed. If shutter speed is important than you would change aperture. Or change your sensor speed higher or lower. If shutter and aperture settings are important.

@@forsterl.stewart414 Can you not also use exposure compensation?
