This was my childhood spot. The service is fine, the guy there 90% of the time is the son of the owner whose worked there no lie for like 15+ years and just clearly kinda hates his life lol. He’s not rude per se, just very shy and quiet and doesn’t really give af about providing above and beyond service since he’s probably worked there since he was like a teen.

You went!!! I've been commenting on and off for years to make it happen. Thank you for checking out my favorite place (although I Love Teriyaki is now serious competition, thanks to you), glad you at least kinda liked it haha. I grew up there (now in my 30s) so that place shaped how I feel about teriyaki. Portion sizes included.
The beef teriyaki there is what I go back to MI for, it's always so tender and delicious but if you think the chicken is too sweet you might not be crazy about the beef either. I'm surprised it wasn't cooked fresh, I always wait for my food and hear them cooking whenever I go so I assumed it was cooked fresh-to-order every time. Anyhow, good luck on the rest of your teriyaki journey!

Mercer Island, I would call a suburb of Seattle. A rich suburb. I used to do a lot of work on Mercer Island and eat here. It reminds me of the old school Seattle Teryaki joints. I now prefer the Hawaiian plates with Mac Salad, Shoyu Chicken, and rice. If you haven't yet, my favorite Teryaki is Teryaki Express in Bellevue. They have a bento box, great Tempura, and make a good General Tso's as well.

I'm very surprised to see that all the teriyaki spots in Seattle have cold salads. Here in the Portland metro area, every time I have gotten teriyaki it has come with steamed cabbage, broccoli, and maybe carrots. Is the steamed veggies a Portland thing, or is that a thing elsewhere? Also, the "island"/Hawaiian places usually have the steamed veggies as well.

It's been quite some time since I last stepped into a teriyaki restaurant. I can't eat it anymore, due to the excessive sugar in the sauce. But it's still nice to be able to watch the videos. It's also getting very expensive nowadays, with the chicken option averaging close to $20 per order after tax. It used to cost about 8 bucks around 12, 15 years ago. And most places have the audacity to charge you 75 cents for extra sauce. Not gonna return when they do stuffs like that. Sauce should be free and to keep customers coming back. How times changed!!

I honestly find that the service at restaurants in the nicer/"tech bro" parts of Seattle is universally bad. Not always (so I think its just particular employees), but often. I've gotten take out from so many restaurants where you walk up to the hostess stand or bar, 5+ employees walk right past you, and no one acknowledges your presence, and then when they finally do they seem annoyed that you're there. Might be a result of the types of patrons they deal with, but it still doesn't excuse it.

I was one of the negative reviewers on this place, based entirely on that one counter person's bad attitude. I'd had several experiences where the guy just insisted on saying some rude/meanhearted even when I simply thanked him, or if I just ordered and said nothing else. It's the sorta story you wouldn't really believe/would sound made up by a disgruntled customer.
Everyone else I've seen work the counter in these past few months has been nice. I'll probably change my review if I don't see that guy over the next few months. I haven't seen him in a while, so I think they finally fired him?
Place is good, though! I just went there today.
