That was great Martin, watched loads of these distillation videos for moonshine but this is best best yet. Would love to see the use of the hydrometer thingy. Have built my version to make that smelly perfume burner liquid and will be trying it with water soon to see if it leaks. Thanks for all your help. Jim

It's all making sense now !! Anything before 81 degrees is heads anything after 91 degrees is tails and all in the middle is schnapps ?? Great explanation Martin !! You've made something that on paper looks very complicated dangerous and poisonous look so simple !! And how clever to use the tails for flavoured liqueurs !! Do you give the heads to difficult guests !! Or does Andy drink the lot ???!!

We actually discard all the Heads but i am thinking of saving them for Andy just in case i needs him to clam down a little now he's numero uno hahaha
Glad you enjoyed it, and there will be a part 3 for dilution and blending very soon
Have a great christmas with the family Ian

Great stuff, I think the whole set up is blummin brill - it looks like some sort of antique sat on the window sill so you've no need to pack it all away like our ugly homebrew stuff. Cheers

Interesting video; in my opinion you'd be better off smelling and tasting for the heads and tails. If you're not sure what to expect really you can divide your whole process into small quantities and you will clearly smell them once you're done. Thermometer placement can affect the temperature reading.

Hi I fully understand the comments on thermometer placement but with the kessle Still i have in the video the thermometer always sits just below the spout were the condense steam is expelled. This then always give a true reading of the temperature and works very well.
As for the temperatures i use in the video i always try to air on the side of caution, heads are taken up to 81.5 degrees a half a degree over the minimum required schnapps is taken up until 91 degrees again half a degree below the tails etc.
With the quantities i use the most important this is repetitive and exact measurement of the material used.
Finally i can speak out laud and tell you after several years of using such a great small still the finished product is fantastic too lol....

Cool. Have you ever used a Deep freeze to distill ? Is freeze distilling safe ? I always wondered about the heads in that process. Or is that only with heat distillation ?

Long time no see Martin,i hope you and silent Bob are doing well.Just wondering where do you get your alembic stills and how much are they? I am in Eire and everything here costs so much,i have a much bigger setup but i recently had to move house an put all my brewing gear in storage.I want to get back into hobby distilling but i am left with a situation now where to do that i would need to buy a smaller countertop setup like what you have as cheap as possible.Even them airstills are like €250 here, just looking for some advice buddy.Cheers.
