I don't think you are negative, instead you are just bringing out positive and negatives of the old toys. Because you love something you are well aware of the flaws in it and this may be interpreted as a negative attitude by those who are essentially blinded by nostalgia. It's nice to see the big picture in a retrospective instead of wearing constantly rose tinted nostalgia glasses and this is one of the things i like the most about your videos.
I have watched 99% of your vids this year and the only thing I can remember you being negative about was Haslab, I guess the Hasbro fanboy police are still brooding about that, keep up the good work.

I'm just a 50 year old toy guy who's been collecting before you and most of the followers were born and I do feel myself becoming that "Get off my lawn" kinda dude. It is, what it is brother, you're never gonna please everyone. Keep doin what you're doin and I'll keep shaking my head and laughing. LOL
Being critical and making critiques both positive and negative is not a bad thing. We live in a society where the slightest bit of criticism, if not directed in the properly desired direction, is frowned upon. It's truly sad. You give very informed and thoughtful reviews and breakdowns and it's very much appreciated from those of us that don't always have to agree to get along and who like different perspectives. Keep up the awesome work.

Pffft. I think this has been one of your better years actually. From the joy of delivering the barge to the absolute giddiness of your mystery box openings. Even if sometimes it doesnt look like youre not exploding in happiness, you can tell by Michaels voice just how really jazzed he is. Let people hate, keep up having a blast at retroblasting.
Sure, Michael can seem a bit crusty at times, and I've made jokes about it (which did NOT go over well), but the truth is that I appreciate Michael being who he is, being honest and possessing a dripping sense of sarcasm. And yes, thank you, not everything needs to be sugarcoated or should be, to promote this false sense of continual optimism. Didn't "The LEGO Movie 2" teach us that "Everything is Not Awesome?"

There’s a big difference between having standards and being negative.
That's the problem. Very few people are intelligent enough to have standards these days. Their entire personality lies within the brands they support.
I was recently called rude and picky because I didn't care for the modern iterations of Star wars and Star Trek.
I would think rudeness would constitute me calling you a litany of very ugly names. But I guess rudeness and negativity are just as you said, having standards.
Bro your wit is top shelf! You may sound pretty dry in your videos but I know that when I watch a Retroblasting video I am getting top level information, history & context. You put alot of thought into your work and it shows. Great channel!
Back in my day this was called "feeding the trolls". You'll never make everyone happy and there is always a small negative group who wants validation through a response from a creator.
You are welcome to be a pacifist with trolls if you wish. Until they've accused you of hoaxes and doxing and racism and threatened your life, your opinion on trolls doesn't mean much to me. My tactics have been learned through a school of unwarranted hard knocks. "Don't feed the trolls" is about as effective as "Just say no."
Not engaging has worked well for me in the past, even when I was a harassed teen nerd, although I also 'dobbed' on bullies which cannot really be called non-engagement. Having said that, it depends on who you are and what circumstances you face.
A public figure suffering vilification will understandably want to set the record right, and when there's a ton of recorded evidence of your integrity, there's every reason to do so. Admittedly I'm thinking more about the whole Sail Barge fiasco, but something like that will really make a person vigilant and prepared to act quickly.

Another thing people say is that you guys HATE modern toys. I didn't really care if you guys did, as i enjoy both modern and vintage toys.
You guys are a big reason why i admire vintage toys and the 80's in general. I am 16 and i've been trying to collect vintage toys since i was about 11. I also collect marvel legends and it is my main toyline. I am very happy to see that you enjoy marvel legends and the mcu too.
I remember watching the rambo video and being really excited when i found a coleco rambo, that was only missing the knives, for sale on a craigslist type website near me when i was in 6th grade. And being really excited when my mom picked me up from school and she had bought it already.
You guys are one of the youtubers that i have been following for the longest time. Hope to soo more great videos in the future.

I just found you recently. I like a lot of this stuff, but I'm not a collector. But I am a fan of delivery and personality - you might say "rhetoric" - which is why I've been watching a lot of your videos. You're plain-spoken, you go up against problems, you have a lot of personality, you're invested in your topic, you're honest, you have a unique vibe. The aesthetics and rhetoric are quite particular and a fun watch for someone who appreciates the video essay art form.
Yeah, I don't understand the "hates everything" stigma. I feel like Mike points out the pros and cons equally. I mean, he reviews toy lines that are often 30+ years old...you have to highlight the negatives and praise the positives...that's how reviews work. I think you guys are doing amazing work. Keep it up, we love you both!
I like your mix of expression and never felt you were negative. You're being honest and at times you can enjoy something and be critical of it, other times a toy is near perfect and sadly sometimes just crap. Keep going, there are too many reviewers who are dishonest because they want free toys from manufacturers so they give clearly inauthentic reviews which is very boring and empty.
Wait a UA-cam presenter and reviewer not willing to pander to everyone for free stuff? I've always felt like Retroblasting and the Dreamland podcast have always presented well thought-out and meaningful opinions and information. Like it or not they are always on the mark, or darn close.
So what, this is your channel, your content. Also they don't have to watch. Just do what you do and the rest of us will enjoy.
Nostalgia has a way of paving over the cracks of things in the past. Because they make us feel good we're willing to overlook any flaws. There's absolutely nothing wrong with looking at things with a critical eye and stating an opinion. As a podcaster I get accused of being too negative as well because I dare to hold up these "icons" to even the slightest bit of scrutiny. Your analysis of the last POTF figures is a sterling example of ignoring the sepia tinted view we have of the past and actually delving deeper into the figures that capped the original SW line. I applaud your truths and find myself nodding along, finally taking those rose colored 80's glasses off (you know the ones that were a thin slit and made you look like you were DEVO) and really examining the things that we loved as kids. Keep going, Mr. French. You're doing great work.

I don't get how you're being negative. I know you've expressed disappointment and certain things, but that should be expected because none of the things we grew up with were perfect. At the same time for every criticism you've mentioned you've had an equally positive thing to say about something.

It is one of my genuine concerns that the art of civil disagreement is vanishing from modern society. How will we manage when the "With or against?" Ideology is prevalent?
Nothing is perfect and Michael is a toy historian. It is his job, his passion to point out the positives AND the negatives of whatever is in front of the camera that day. If you don't like that he pointed out a failing or flaw in something you remember fondly from your childhood, no one is making you watch him. You like armored Knights? If you go on a museum tour and the guide pointed out that armor failed because of the invention and improvement of firearms, would you say the guide hated armor and had a bias towards firearms? No, so why do it here? You are better than that, so be better.
Some people will never get it... You know, we don't always agree on every toy & cartoon. But NEVER have I felt disrespected as a person, insulted, or that you really "hate" anything. I don't even think you hate Thundercats as much as some make you out to, because you CAN still be objective and say good things when they are truly warranted, and even give an entire panel presentation with a level head! Oh, the negativity & hate!
And the Retroblasting Team has gone WELL above the standard out of LOVE for fans of all varieties & properties. There's a depth to y'all that's way beyond just "lookatme lookatme lookat meeee!!!" that so many others have. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.
10/10 Video, i subscribed because I want unbiased honest reviews and commentary, and Michael delivers every single time, one may disagree with his opinion but nobody can't deny is genuine and with the fan/collector in mind.
I've always had this problem where I'll criticize things, things that I love even, and then people will write me off as hating those things with a passion. I don't understand how recognizing and acknowledging imperfections, faults, etc is a bad thing. The same kind of people criticize me personally, my friends, and my family a lot, and it's downright hypocritical. Often I find the people who don't want you to criticize anything are the same people who are hyper-judgmental to others are are speaking ill about you behind your back, and I don't respect them.
Sounds like a lot of people aren't really paying attention to your videos. I certainly couldn't watch this channel if you or Melinda "hated everything." I find the observations on this channel insightful and informative, and any negatives are brought up with good reason. Plus, I have a hard time believing a fellow Kylie fan could ever be a truly negative person.

I actually enjoy seeing different takes on opinions. It helps to see a different point of view. As much as I love new Star Wars and modern toys, you do make convincing points about the modern toy climate. Keep it up!
Being critical of the things you love is important. I find that I complain about things I like more than those I don't. It makes more sense to spend time talking about what you love, even when it's critical, than to waste more time on subjects you don't care much about.
This video easily sums up everything i love about this channel. Despite not being an 80s kid. Man i must also be such a negative person to enjoy watching this negative person ;)

It’s called being honest about a certain product because we want to good stuff out of it if we didn’t care we wouldn’t even be talking about it that’s why I love this channel be a straight up honest about toys from my childhood knowing that I’m not the only one who is thinking this or being crazy about it

Oh Michael. Don't be hatin'!! Seriously though dude. Don't worry about them! I commented on a Star Wars page about how I lost my enthusiasm after the last two movies and I wasn't excited about episode 9. People got all bent out of shape and told me to not ruin it for them. They said they were very excited and I should just be quiet about it if I didn't like it. Well, I wasn't quiet about it and I asked them to point out the part of my statement where I said they couldn't be happy about it and enjoy it. Their response?? .................
I can only remember two things Michael didn't really like -- Thundercats and the recent Star Wars films. Everything else he seems to like but makes it clear which aspects he doesn't care for.

I don’t believe Michael is negative. His personality reminds me a lot of my own and people in my everyday life often accuse me of being negative when I share my opinion on something. I don’t consider myself to be negative but rather to be a realist.

Your Age of Ultron video, the only time I can think of anybody seeing and agreeing with the merits of what I've always felt about that movie, made me so happy not just for the validation of my perspective but that you were able to enjoy it in the same way, and that to me is a glowing endorsement of how positive you've been especially this year.
I don't find you negative, just sarcastic, cynical, and quick tempered. I like your review and parody videos which is why I'm subscribed, but this video kind of confirms my suspicions. Never change! We obviously keep coming back for more!

I think I get it where the idea came from, as I have a similar problem. I often like things, but I can't really express those feelings when I talk about them.
The only time you look and sound actually excited is when you have the chrome Conquest in your hand. You could try to emulate that feeling when you do videos, and create one for regular viewers, and one for those who expect excitement.
Um negative? Not really. Truthful, honest? Definately. One of the biggest reasons your channel is in my top 3 for toys is you are not afraid to point out flaws in manufacturing as well as positive attributes. Most other channels begin to sound like infomercials that try to persuade you to run out and buy something. Almost as if they are paid to rave about a new line. That's okay, but not what I want to see in a review. Sure , I may not always agree with some things Michael may bring up, but most of the time he makes valid arguments. I think a few out there in you tube land were outraged because you had the balls to call Hasbro out on a few of thier business models. I commend you for bringing out what many of us were reluctant to say. Keep being brutally honest. It's why we watch you. If other viewers cant handle a few complaints about there favorite toy, then maybe they can go get thier ears tickled somewhere else. Thanks Michael, I find your reviews to be spot on.

Showing a 3 min clip of “positive” comments (in a monotone, un-excited voice) from the past year is not a defense of criticism that overall you’re not “negative.” It’s an attempt at spin.
I think you’re genuinely freaking out about the demonetizing “kidpocalypse” coming from UA-cam and trying to figure out just what the hell you’re going to do. Patron? Maybe. But Lashing out in desperation at your audience isn’t going to change your image. Actions going forward speak louder than words or a montage.
During my ELA and comp classes I was often seen as pretty negative when doing peers reviews of others papers. Honestly, I’m just a concise writer and feel that criticism should be straight to the point lest it loses its impact. Keep up the great work RetroBlasting and never change!

Just because you say something that's not favorable doesn't mean it's negative.
To critique is to be honest about the quality and function of whatever you're appraising.
I don't know why people think you have to say something overly nice about everything.
I think your critiques/reviews are really honest and well articulated.

Michael is one of the best on UA-cam for honest toy review. It’s hard not to bust out laughing and feeling disgusted at the same time when I hear reports from these viewers with idiotic rants. Just because someone doesn't like something for whatever reason (quality, style, etc.) Doesn't make that person negative.
The passion and knowledge RetroBlasting provides keeps me coming back for each video. Even videos on the toys and cartoons I had no idea existed, I have found entertaining.
The dry humor is a perfect fit for the content. How can you not laugh at broken Vader or a sing along with Skeletor? And don' t forget the rare appearance of Littlefoot.
The reviews are always provide well informed opinions. Don't change a thing. Between the restoration videos and Dragon Con presentations, RetroBlasting has proven to be a positive force in the collecting community.
I've learned from experience that if I'm a fan of something and listening to someone criticize that thing makes me less of a fan, then chances are that I was never really a fan of that thing to begin with. The stuff that I truly love is critic-proof and no matter how many times I listen to someone bash it or complain about it, it doesn't affect my love for that thing. If it does, then that's an indicator that maybe I don't love it as much as I originally thought.
In the future you should do two versions of every video 😉.
One for us in the real world and one is the super duper special edition with sugar-coating and a cherry on top of it for the wimps 😬.
